The inability of a certain subset of blockheaded fans to notice Kris's gender is so. This is a game which places a nonbinary protagonist in a narrative that has them struggling explicitly with how much control they are allowed to have over their own life, whose best friends are a girl who is gleefully unfeminine and a boy who has no idea who he's supposed to be but sure seems to like being pretty, after the first few seconds of the game consisted of us trying to create our own form and then being told point blank "no one can choose who they in this world," where the above three children are all being railroaded into and struggling to escape their roles in a religiously per-ordained questline that we know ends very badly for them. If you think gender is not being employed here in a way that is specific, intentional, and thematically relevant then you are not serious

it's crazy to think back on undertale and just how openly and casually queer it's been since the beginning. like, everything with alphys and undyne (+ alphys explicitly being bisexual). the guard boyfriends. several nonbinary/agender characters. mettaton not only being transmasc but also a hyper flamboyant diva and is unambiguously regarded by the game as Sexy. mad mew mew basically being the transfem equivalent of mettaton, continuing the theme of ghosts finding joy and purpose in their new inhabited bodies. even just little things like the transfem lion npc in hotland. like it was just always like this. all of these were woven into the game so naturally yet so clearly with a loving hand. and to this day tobert is still throwing life-altering yuri and transgenderisms left and right with every new deltarune chapter but it cannot be overstated how much he's been cooking since the unholy year of 2015

seeing this resonating with a lot of people in the notes who have undertale to thank for their queer awakenings/their first exposure to lgbt representation in media which is awesome, but also if you've read through the fan letters that were sent in for the 10th anniversary stream event you'll REALLY get a scope of just how many people have this shared experience. it's kinda insane. if you grew up with undertale, there's like, statistically, a really high chance that it impacted your gender or sexuality in a way that you didn't know was possible before...... and i just think that's a wild accomplishment for a game that doesn't even Really focus on queerness all that much in its core narrative

the distinction between professional and amateur is pay btw. if you get paid for doing it you're doing it professionally. it says nothing about quality. some of the best craftspeople on earth are amateurs and some of the worst writers are professionals.
