A favorite from my shoreline series, the meeting space of Earth and Sea. These works derive from my interest in an emotional moment bounded by an implied, but unresolved narrative - a counter reaction to the highly guided narratives I tend to undertake as a commercial book illustrator.

Cranach the Elder Inspired Mermaid

Painter Lucas Cranach the Elder created many portraits and allegorical paintings featuring young women in the early 1500s. His depiction of their gowns became so synonymous that they are colloquially named after him.

These mermaids all made it into a mermaid colouring book!

How to draw underwater settings: make everything floaty and weightless. Done! ✅ Unless you're a geek like me and want to learn all about how to paint the lighting: the highlights of the ripples, the bluish glow, the reflections.. there's a lot to think about but it's so satisfying once you get it right!

I recolored them all stripe by stripe on Photoshop because I'm a *perfectionist*. You can't just lighten a color, you need to adjust the saturation too.
