And I get that caleb is extremely filial, that he shielded mc a lot and didnāt let her experience lifeās struggles and that granny and him didnāt share a lot of informations with mc so maybe they were struggling financially but mc was none the wiser, but from what the game shows us they didnāt seem poor by any sense of the word so I donāt know why it keeps on pushing this narrative. I guess that what Iām asking is, were they struggling financially? Were they poor?

Nooo I get it coz Iāve actually thought about this before lol! Iāll defo have to go reread a bunch of stuff to have a proper understanding [anyone pls correct me if I have anything wrong/missing context] but what I understand so far is,
I see it as they probably did struggle financially but werenāt in extreme poverty or anything. They were probably good when it came to absolute necessities but luxuries were things Caleb had to work for to spoil Mc with. Which we know he really likes doing.
When it comes to Josephine, I just assumed sheās no longer working as a scientist and is somewhat lowkey with raising CalebMc. Maybe Iām forgetting a lot but it doesnāt really explain much beyond Mc meeting Caleb at their childhood home. Most of it is too vague to understand a proper timeline so for money, my guess is she probably had savings to look after them from her time as a scientist?? Rather than anything she does now?
When it comes to the aestheticsācoz lol, they did live in a pretty nice houseā i just assume thatās just for visual appeal. Or not wanting to characterise Mc/Her past so heavily while still emphasising Calebās responsibility. Itās sweet that they still have this cute habit of couponing and getting freebies together but I donāt think the story wants to focus on a genuine depiction of poverty.
I think CalebMcās stories more explore the pair being the only two people who can rely on each other and financial responsibility is just one example of that.
In Catch 22ās Tainted Cuts, they do grow up in extreme poverty, compared to any other version of them, which strengthens the bond they have. Whereas other Auās rely on different situations to keep them bonded. Being experiments of a lab together, being born spoiled royals, as gods of fundamental realities of existence, etcā¦ these extreme upbringings make them very codependent and I think Main Timeline CalebMc being the healthiest in comparison, is probably why their childhood isnāt as extreme in any aspect.
Ultimately I think itās similar to how Josephine isnāt gonna be depicted as abusive/neglectful, yet Caleb somehow is heavily parentified. Caleb taking on financial responsibilities is to emphasise that dutiful trait of his without going too far in exploring the idea of poverty.
Saying that! poverty w CalebMc has been an idea I really want to explore in my own fan works so maybe Iāll have a scenario that looks at the story differently from what Iāve said here/how I view canon.
