America #1 came out today, and I finally got the chance to sit down and read it! Ho boy, get ready for my rant!

First off, I’ve cosplayed America before because she just spoke to me as a character. Here we have this strong, bad ass, Latina babe that can fucking punch stars in the dimensions. Not only that, she’s queer as fuck. 

I mean, shit, this is only page 3. This comic had me crying by page 4-5. America is the superhero I need. I’ve always loved Iron Man, Captain America, Storm, and Psylocke. Even villain Loki has a place in my heart. However, this babe? She steals the show and reading this issue just solidified that all consuming love for her. Why?

She’s me. She’s the representation I’ve been wanting and praying for. Marvel has given us a Latina, queer superhero that “cringes at anything related to emotions”. You can ask my friends, that’s me in a nut shell. The queer Latina that doesn’t do emotions. The “fear that folks might take advantage of you or that you’ll be viewed as fragile”. I was kicking my feet just reading Gabby Rivera’s (@quirkyrican) “The America’s Letter” Page. I can’t thank Rivera enough for just slamming us with all of this reinforcement of different elements that make up America in just issue 1. 

Another thing that screamed at me in the face and had me in tears, is the mention of her two moms. Granted, that doesn’t resonate so much with me as I have a mother and a father, but the part that did was the fact that America no longer has her moms. I lost Mom 3 years ago this March 21st, and seeing America in one panel saying, “What I wouldn’t give to hug my moms one more time…” had me bawling. It’s just another relatable thing I share with her. 

Now that I’m crying again, lets talk about HOW HER BODY IS DRAWN/PRESENTED

Thank FUCK for drawing her like this. Those hips, that shape. I just freak out more and more the more artwork I see of her. That’s my body type and it makes me want to hit the gym that much harder to get babe muscles like America. I haven’t decided which costume I want to cosplay her, but holy damn this is a big front runner. She’s just… She’s perfect.

I had every intention of writing this and coming off as some intelligent writer, but here I am, barely refraining from smashing my keyboard. I cannot freak out enough about this comic or series. The representation makes me cry with happiness. I cannot thank Marvel or Rivera enough. I wish I was at the signing today, but I hope and pray I am able to meet you in the future, Rivera, and thank you in person. This first issue was fucking awesome and I cannot wait for more. I cannot wait for more social issues to be mentioned and dealt with, because you/your team has a handle on it.

The district’s policy is to give a student a hot meal and charge the parent’s account the first three times they forget lunch money, communications director Tustin Amole told ABC News today. The fourth time, the student is given a cheese sandwich – a single slice of cheese on a hamburger bun – and a milk.

…Curry felt she could not stand by and keep letting it happen.

“It’s not nutrition. It’s not healthy,” she said. “It’s wrong on so many levels, and I hated to see food go to waste. I hated to see food thrown away that could’ve been given to these children that are hungry.”

Curry was supposed to take the students’ food, throw it away and replace it with the cheese sandwich and milk if a student had exceeded the $7.60 debt limit, she said. Instead, she would cancel the transaction and remind the student to bring their lunch money.

Curry acknowledged that her actions went against the district’s policy and when asked why she did it, Curry said, “Because it was the right thing to do and sometimes doing what is right is not what is easy.”

They deliberately have the child pay after they’ve received the lunch and before they eat it, so that the child gets food that cannot be returned to the serving supply. 

They have no interest in retaining the food.

They have no interest in not wasting the food.

They have no interest in not losing the monetary value of the food.

It’s just as fucking gone in the dumpster as it would be if the kid ate it.

But they’d rather put the food in the dumpster than let the child eat it.
