Ok, I've officially seen the movie now, and...
I'm more disappointed than angry.
The pacing was terrible. Moments that should've been reflected on more by characters were just completely glossed over. Reaction shots were so quickly cut back and forth that you barely see the actors, well, ACT. Seriously, there's barely any lingering, impactful reaction shots. Maybe a couple, but not nearly enough. Same with the action shots, they were so all over the place, it was almost dizzying.
As far as plot, I'm not TOO mad about it. There was definitely too much going on. Too many new characters that I just couldn't bring myself to care about. Too much time spent on new character backstories that could've been spent on the one's we already care about. No Finn backstory?? Really?? AND Poe is a spice runner?? WHY NO EXPLAIN??
The dialogue was awkward between Rey, Finn, and Poe. It was glaringly obvious that the actors didn't enjoy the lines they were saying to each other. They had no chemistry together, which is REALLY strange considering they seem to be great friends off-screen. But there were a few quippy lines I laughed at, especially C3P0's one-liners.
I hated that they brought back Palpatine. I hated that they made Rey a Palpatine. Just, no. Any other big-bad, even HUX, would have been fine for me. Let Rey have her own villain to face, not a former villain that was already defeated once. What's to keep him from coming back AGAIN now? It was pointless.
And there was no reconciliation in the force between dark and light. Just the light prevails, especially when the only character who may have truly found balance between both (Ben) dies, leaving just Rey on the faaaaar light side. How is that balance? Doesn't that mean that the dark will just rise again?
And, of course, Ben's death. *sigh*. It was a hero's end, to be sure. But was it necessary? Not really. And it was so abrupt that many in my theater screening actually chuckled. And when it cut away to Rey flying away in her xwing, one guy literally said "wait, that's it??" And we laughed again.
Again, they could've given a bit more. A force ghost, at least. Or maybe a hint that he wasn't all the way gone if they plan to bring him back in some way. I'm going to laugh if they retcon his death just like Palpatine's.
The best part was when Reylo kissed, EVERYONE cheered. The GA was happy about it! I was so proud :')
Overall, I'm sort of neutral. It wasn't the dumpster fire I thought it would be. But it didn't exactly live up to even my lowest expectations as the "final word in the story of Skywalker". I left the theater going "meh. 🤷♀️"
