born in a lower tax bracket in the heart of the bronx, elliott grew up not knowing very much about his parents. apparently his father never even knew that he and his mother existed, and the latter had died when elliott was only two years old. she had been killed by a drunk driver while on her way home from a night shift.
however, despite all of that, elliott and his aunt made a home out of their humble two bedroom house. elliott never really felt like he was missing much of anything with the amount of love his aunt poured into him. sure, kids were often mean and sometimes, he’d feel a pang of jealousy whenever he saw a little boy run into their mother or father’s arms, but he was satisfied, and he absolutely loved his aunt laurette.
elliott was raised to be compassionate and optimistic but his aunt was pleasantly surprised to find out that elliott was also incredibly bright. he was renowned to be a hard-working and gifted student and by the time he had turned 18, elliott had earned himself a full-ride scholarship to the one and only, m.i.t. there, he earned his degree in mechanical engineering and graduated at the age of twenty-three. after graduation, elliott stayed in the city of boston to work for a private consulting company — a cushy position that one of his professors had helped set up for him.
in adulthood, elliott maintained his intense work ethic — his habits bordering on being one of a workaholic’s. his aunt always told him that he worked too hard and needed to learn how to also enjoy his life. but elliott couldn’t help it, now that he had achieved what he’d been working his entire life towards — a comfortable lifestyle where he could financially support himself and his aunt — he was feeling lost, and working helped distract him from that directionless feeling.
he climbed the ranks at his company pretty quickly, finding himself in the role of senior project engineer by the time he was thirty. outside of his work, elliott’s life was quite normal. he had a few friends that he’d occasionally spend time with, hobbies to busy himself with, and he achieved every adult milestone he hoped for with ease. he had bought his own home and had even paid off his aunt’s mortgage for her ( she stubbornly refused to move to boston with him ). but still, something from his life felt like it was missing and he still had yet to find it.
elliott was thirty-four when he ended up in the town. aunt laurette had been hospitalized that winter after slipping on her front steps and breaking a hip. elliott had been driving back to new york to stay with her for a while and he’s not quite sure how, but out of nowhere he’s suddenly passing through a town he can’t even locate on his google maps and came across the fallen tree across the road.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
soft-spoken and shy, elliott is the epitome of a gentle giant. he often keeps to himself around town and doesn’t like to insert himself in situations unless necessary. at the beginning, he was adamant about trying to get out of town — his pragmatic and scientific mind refusing to accept the reality of his situation. most importantly, he was desperate to get back to his aunt — concern for her wellbeing practically driving him nuts. but after a few weeks he finally learned to accept his situation with disappointed resignation.
like the busybody that he is, elliott picked up the role of being the town handyman pretty quickly after his arrival. at first it started out with just him offering to help others out when overhearing their problems at the diner or while out on a walk — a broken fence or creaky door fixed every once in a while. and really, the title was never bestowed upon him in any official capacity — it was just that one day, elliott seemed to be most people’s go-to guy whenever they needed any sort of help, and elliott was always happy to help.
although it takes a while, once elliot actually opens up, he has this infections, sunny disposition that makes him generally amiable to most folks. he’s generous, dedicated, and often idealistic to a fault. he can’t help it, having learned to always look on the bright side of things from his aunt. though he can also be meticulous and a bit of a perfectionist — experiencing devastating disappointment when things don’t work out like he had hoped.

𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘
born and raised in portland, oregon, charlie’s parents had moved there after martin hawkins had gotten a job within the local lumber industry. however, his true passion was books — and so after a few years he and grace had opened up their own bookstore downtown. that bookstore is where charlie spent almost the entirety of his childhood, learning to love literature just as much as the rest of his family did.
like for many kids, books served as an escape for charlie. growing up, he was a quiet and shy boy, making him easy pickings at school. though things weren’t too bad, his brother would try his best to protect him from most of it and charlie always had the bookstore to look forward to at the end of each day. so for most of his elementary and high school days, charlie simply kept his head down, coloured within the lines, and chose to focus on his studies.
and eventually things did pay off — with fantastic grades, some extracurriculars under his belt, and winning several local ( and sometimes national ) creative writing contests and awards, charlie was a shoe-in for a scholarship of merit at boston university. during his time there, he wrote for the student newspaper and spent all of his free time workshopping novels and submitting his work to anyone and everyone who would listen. the newspaper is how charlie had met and started seeing his future wife — rebecca.
together, they graduated in the spring of 1993 and entered the adult world where they were both trying to make it in the writing industry. charlie’s interests leaned more towards writing fictional novels, specifically in the science and literary fiction realm, whereas rebecca was more interested in the political and historical spheres of non-fiction. charlie had published his debut novel in the early 2000s — a work of satirical science fiction, leaning almost on horror. it was a hit as soon as it hit the shelves and had set up the trajectory of charlie’s career on a steady climb.
taking us to the present ( minus 8 years or so ), charlie hawkins is a well-renowned, critically-acclaimed author who’s last book was released almost a decade ago and was received with lukewarm enthusiasm at best. his wife was also a published author but had retired early-on to teach graduate courses. charlie’s life was in a state of lull, to put it simply. which was why he had suggested they take a cross-country road trip to help bring back inspiration to their lives — something that he had hoped could be turned into another best-selling novel. which is how they had ended up in the middle of a run-down road in the middle of — illinois ? or was it wyoming ? it’s hard to recall the details. but they had come across a tree that had fallen across the road, and passed the town with its strange inhabitants, of which they suddenly found themselves stuck in. they hadn’t even been there a day when charlie had lost rebecca.
charlie's not quite sure how he came to be the leader of the colony house, he can't imagine himself exuding any sort of authority or gravitas, so maybe it was just by default — seeing as he'd been around pretty long compared to most people. but charlie takes his role very seriously, caring for others helps serve as a distraction from his loss and filled the void in his heart rebecca had left. if he busied himself enough with tasks and chores, that meant the thoughts and feelings never had a chance to linger and pierce through the walls he had carefully built for himself.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘
in regards to first impressions, charlie can definitely come across as rough around the edges but in actuality, he is incredibly benevolent and often, his own well-being is the last thing on his mind. self-less and empathetic to a fault, he has a tendency of spreading himself out too thin and shouldering everyone’s problems without a single complaint.
while he’s not cynical, charlie recognizes that it’s not the best idea to wear your heart on your sleeve. he doesn’t readily reveal his emotions to others, not believing that to be other people’s problem ( ironically enough ) and would much rather be left to deal with his issues alone.
although charlie has a very reserved demeanor, he’s a passionate man which can definitely lead him to act more impulsively at times. however, his actions are never reckless — with unwavering morals and values, charlie is often confident in his decisions and tends to believe in those decisions wholeheartedly. this causes him to be a tad prideful at times, and has difficulties in admitting his mistakes
