Queryâs head bobbed as she laughed. âYeah I would say that a collection of books counts. It really is impossible to pick just one after all.â She rolled over to the bookshelves, arranging the new arrivals in places where the worn out ones would not get damaged, and where the slightly newer ones were likely to catch peoples eyes.
âSo itâs programmed in. No bother then! We canât go against programming after all. That would be like me not trying to ask questions all the time, or not wanting to learn. Near impossible!â
âAnd wow, 1904, youâre in really good shape for your age! My turn now! Guess how old I am, guess!â
âWell, then, itâs The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, maâam.â she turned to the shelves herself, searching for titles she hadnât read before, or ones she had enjoyed so much, she wanted her own copy to keep.
âQuite, maâam. It can be inconvenient at times, yes?â she looked sharply over at Query. âNot that I think your programming to be inconvenient, maâam. I mean that generally.â
âOh, goodness, I⌠Iâm not very good at this. Youâre clearly of a more advanced design than myself, maâam, if you donât mind my saying so, therefore I would say you either have a particularly gifted creator, or Iâd place your construction some time in the last⌠forty years? Or possibly itâs both of those things.â
Her engine gave a little hiccup of pride at her momma getting praised. "Nope! Twice that age! Though Momma has been upgrading me a little recently. She cleaned me up and fixed my treads. I hadn't had enough money to get a new pair since she died." She leaned over a little, tapping one of her treads on the floor.
"And thanks for the compliment. I'm really not all that fancy. Now, if I had a blue matter core, THEN I'd be fancy-"
They were interrupted by the garage door opening. Gryphon stomped in, rummaged under the desk for a moment, then stomped back out.
"But Momma sure built me good. Nice and sturdy. You look very advanced yourself, to have been built so long ago and still run so well!"
