Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai died #onthisday in 1849. Here are four of his stunning colour woodblock prints, two of which are from his Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces series.

This series, completed in 1833-34, contained eight prints and was the first woodblock series to depict the theme of falling water . The works were highly acclaimed for their innovative and expressive approaches.

Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Klimt, Manet and van Gogh, among others, were all greatly influenced by Hokusai’s work, and without this influence movements like Impressionism, Art Nouveau and Modernism may not have happened.
