Shit I Love

THAT’S how ABC News opened today (11/8/18) after yet another mass shooting, this time in a California bar. They’ve become so common that they occur on almost a weekly basis, yet no one bats an eye anymore.

Today was supposed to be an ordinary day. In fact, it’s a Friday— the end of the week meaning there are only two weeks of school left in Texas.

The shooting happened during class. A few phones buzzed with the customary sound of an amber alert, but I shrugged it off as the usual robbery alert that people sometimes get.

It was after that class when I opened my phone that I found out there had been a shooting. I remember freezing for just a second, trying to think if any of my friends went to Sante Fe High School. This high school is less than 40 miles from my school. It’s even closer to my house.

We’re just kids. No matter what we say, we’re just kids. We mess up— we do stupid things. We shouldn’t have to worry about the next time someone is going to burst through our classroom doors with a gun wielded in their arms. I shouldn’t have to hold my breath when I open my phone because what if it finally hit too close to home? What if my cousin, my friend, or a teacher was shot? We should be gushing over prom, not burying our friends, our siblings, our fellow students.

Never again.
