since he’s jamil’s biggest fan, was he upset when book 4 happened because of the betrayal itself

or was that when he became a fan because jamil is now fully himself instead of just polite

OKAY, SO 👏

I conceived Malik as not just a random Scarabia student that is loyal to Jamil for no reason, but as someone who is tied to Jamil’s past. If you’ll recall, Twst has made several references to the friends Jamil had in middle school and the mischief they got up to.

Malik is meant to be one of those old middle school friends that Jamil fell out of contact with. More specifically, he’s based on the voice lines about a friend that keeps taking Jamil’s snacks + the one who got into a big fight with Jamil over something trivial.

The idea is that the two reunite at NRC, but Jamil wants nothing to do with him because Malik knows alllll of his embarrassing childhood stories. That, and it kind of stings Jamil knowing his old friend is still able to be as carefree as ever whereas Jamil has had to strip away parts of himself to make way for “professionalism” and more closely tending to Kalim at school. Jamil wants to put distance and walls between them, whereas Malik is looking to reconnect. Admittedly, this aspect of Malik’s character comes from the behavior or irl parrots rather than from any Disney material, as I like incorporating animal elements to my animal-based OCs. Parrots are incredibly sociable animals and place a lot of attention + importance on being with their flock, so that’s why Malik is more group-oriented than some of his NRC peers are.

In the original concept for Aladdin, Jafar took all of his emotions and transferred them into his parrot, which would leave him distraction-free and therefore more able to focus on honing his magic. So!! I want Malik to kinda be like Jamil's sounding board, someone able to loudly express all the pent-up frustrations that Jamil has, but cannot express himself (not until way later in the main story, anyway). I think Malik would be aware of Jamil's true feelings all along and tries to show support in spite of this knowledge. He hopes that his loud support will help Jamil gain the courage to change his fate, since he knows that just TELLING Jamil to his face "stand up for yourself"/"leave" wouldn't do anything. That is, in a way, Malik's way of showing his mindfulness.

During the events of book 4, envision Malik always kinda perched in the corner, fully knowing what Jamil is doing, but choosing to not intervene. He wants his friend to be as free as he was in the days before NRC, even if it means taking the risk at a power grab.
