Many people make the assumption that fairies and vampires are two separate and completely unrelated beings. 

This is fundamentally incorrect.

Any and all vampire legends are truly about fairies. Most fairies that ally with the human world (the idea of woodland creatures and fairy godmothers being the few immortals that enjoy teasing mortals) will hid their fangs and unnatural nature.

Now, contrary to most beliefs, they do not kill to drink blood. Blood is simply similar to nectar and is a common part of their meals. Not necessarily human blood, this can include: cows, sheep, birds, rodents. 

When an animal dies, they simply take its body for food. If not, fairies could theoretically survive on just plants and nectar.

In the case of defense, fairies have their large wings. Most are similar to butterflies, as they are associated with the land around them. There are other kinds of fairies but most are reigned in the Grass lands and therefore keep to similar species.

They can fly away from threats but the wings themselves are a delicate material and take years to grow back after being damaged. If you were to break the spine of a fairy’s wings, you would ground them for life.

This is why most fairies have evolved to seem more human in appearance. When threatened, they can hide their wings by allowing the spines to meld back into their skin. This creates a design on their backs that looks like tattoos. 

They are ruled by a leader called the Fae King. He has scales like the legends of dragons and his wings are tougher and harder to break.

He is an angry creature. Do not engage with him.

Now, the one sure fire way to recognize a fairy is by the color red. They can have unnatural colors in their hair, eyes, and even some grow scales of the red color. Orange and pink are suspicious colors as well but red is the most obvious trait.
