Okay this is a popular one but lemme just put together a list of reasons based on the Death Note Anime because this headcanon is so fricking exciting to me!! Feel free to add more.
-Speaks in a monotone voice
-Ignores common social rules of interaction, talks in a very blunt manner (“Matsuda, YOU ABSOLUTE IDIOT!!!”). Not necessarily obscene but sort of macabre language?
-On occasion, extremely good at empathizing, hence he can often be several steps ahead of Kira.
-Strong morals and sense of justice. Well, questionable morals at times, but strong nonetheless.
-Literally only wears one outfit consisting of a baggy shirt & jeans.
-NEVER WEARS SOCKS. Shoes only when absolutely necessary.
-The way he sits, with his legs up. Iconic. He says it helps him think. (Sitting a certain way for specific sensory input? Absolutely a thing.)
-Constantly fidgeting.
-Holds things “weirdly” (phone, paper). Dyspraxia?
-Can only eat certain foods. Literally. The anime only shows him eat sweets, snacks, and the occasional strawberry or banana. Drinks basically only tea with loads of sugar. Probably can’t handle savoury or spicy foods at all?
-Possibly has joint hypermobility or similar collagen defects (which are common-ish in autistic people). Could be the cause of his extremely pale skin, the permanent dark circles under his eye, bad posture and also another reason for him to sit his usual way.
- 24/7 fixated on the Kira case.
-Special Interests in crime solving (he solves cases on an international level under multiple pseudos!!) and especially the Kira case.
Adding to the last point. He only takes cases that interest him. If he doesn’t find a case interesting, he leaves it for other detectives. We really only saw the Kira case but this was his stated policy.
Could the scene where Aizawa yelling at him and then touching him be another clue? Because after he touched him L was then shaking and was more clenched into himself than usual. :o
Yes, that really stands out here! When people touch him, he possibly feels threatened, because he’s not the person exerting control over the situation and this makes him anxious (enough to start shaking like that), or it may cause sensory overload.
The former makes more sense when we consider the scene where Light touches his shoulder; everything with Light feels within his control, so it does not make him nervous. Light is chained to him, under surveillance, and accompanied by others more often than not. It could also be that he trusts Light more, and like some people with autism, it is then acceptable for them to touch you because it feels safe (I know that seems like a weird concept if he’s Kira though).
Another example of his problem with contact is L File No.15 where he uses self-defense to stop people trying to hug him, because he thinks they’re attacking him:
It’s like when he doesn’t understand the intentions behind physical contact, it’s not under control and makes him nervous.
(I’d also like to make a note that he also takes up an interest in problem solving activities, as shown in the second panel, which can indicate a high IQ - another trait which can be found with autism (but more so with aspergers, from what I know))

The “they attacked me” part really makes a huge piece of evidence for me to be honest. Like. That’s not very neurotypical of you, L.
The lets-Light-touch-him thing sounds very familiar haha uncontrolled physical contact is exactly the right word, and kind of applies to all kinds of sensory input.
(the IQ thing can apply to anyone on the autism spectrum, but people with “"obviously high”“ IQs are more likely to be diagnosed with Aspergers than with autism (but since they’re both Autism Spectrum Disorder now, that’s becoming more of a functioning labels issue) and playing by himself as a kid is also a pretty common autistic experience)

i do think we need to detach hygiene from value as a person. as someone who has dealt with not being able to shower or brush my teeth due to depression and executive dysfunction, it usually is not a choice. sometimes there are situations in which you CANNOT care for yourself properly and that shouldn’t mean you can now be stripped of your worth. physically disabled people who have trouble with hygiene i love you, mentally ill people who have trouble with hygiene i love you, neurodivergent people who struggle with hygiene i love you, people without access to adequate hygiene products i love you. it’s going to be ok

I used to think enemies to lovers was my favourite dynamic, but after looking at my ships I can confidently say that friends who have no boundaries, are completely obsessed with each other, are basically already dating, will let the world burn down for the other, and are too clueless to realize they’re in love to actually still just friend because by the time they realized their feelings one of them has moved on/died is my favourite dynamic
it should be noted that the effects would not be the same level of raw power as rapunzel or moonsandra. they act more like minor curses than anything else.
hugo would have a harder time getting a concussion or being knocked out with a frying pan then the rest of the group and is a bit of a fast healer but that’s about it under normal circumstances. however, when in the dark kingdom, his hair might glow, albeit very dimly. he also is able to calm people down in tense situations and gets attached to things very, very easily. he’s a little possessive but not to the point of obsession.
varian has a special connection to the rocks, specifically the red ones, as i imagine he has a chunk of some in his bag for research and safe keeping. while it no longer produces auditory and visual hallucinations or paralysis, it can still bring out a fight or flight response if varian is holding it. additionally, his eyes become a bit uncanny and distant when he’s upset or staring, to the point where it can be hard to look away. also, his hairstripe is glow-in-the-dark, cause i said so.
