the UK government implementing age verification on VPNs destroys the privacy and security of all VPN users. It also limits the ability of children to keep themselves safe online; VPNs are primarily a cybersecurity tool, although the UK government seems to have forgotten that. They can help keep people safe by encrypting traffic to make it difficult for hackers to access your online communications. Limiting VPN access will do a lot of damage to the cybersecurity of children and adults.

need a death note AU where light and L are co-hosts on a true crime podcast. L used to run it on his own, but he brought light on the show to discuss cases with him at length to help determine whether or not he's kira. the audience thinks L accusing him is a bit and now every time light posts or says anything, his comments are flooded with "7% chance bro is kira" "that's what kira would say" and other similar bullshit that L encourages by liking them, of course.
after L leaves the podcast, light continues it on his own, but it's much less popular. this leaves room for mello and near to compete for relevancy to cater to L's former audience. near's content is super factual and informative, very well-researched but a bit boring. mello's content is similar, but whenever he makes a factual error in one of his videos, near comments on it (with the genuine intention to be helpful) and mello gets fucking PISSED. he's definitely made callout videos directed at near calling him a whiny baby bitch and either gotten no response, or a very level-headed analysis of his behaviour.
matt's a gaming streamer and he's genuinely just living his best life. chat can hear his roommate screaming in the background sometimes but that's fine, they know that's just how he is. they probably keep a tally. matt's definitely been asked to play a shitty fanmade L x light dating sim on stream.

age gaps are actually not a problem in themselves (as long as both participants are adults blah blah you know the drill). the potentially harmful dynamics between two partners with a big age difference arise from other factors that are associated with age. more wealth. more stable life situation. a big gap in relationship/dating experience. this is of course worsened if you add gender and/or racial dynamics to it. age in itself doesn't create this imbalance, we just exist in a system where older people are more likely to have other forms of privilege over their younger partner.
if you're both 30 but one of you has a job and owns the apartment in which you both live, that is a lot riskier than if you're 20 and 40 but both have independent income and housing. ya know?

I saw an emotional regulation resource that was titled as a resource "for men" & I wanted to talk about this kind of gendering a little.
first, obviously I think it is essential that men learn to handle their emotions, because they are people, and it's everyone's responsibility to learn how to self regulate to the best of their ability. and I understand in some contexts it has utility to have emotional regulation resources presented as "for" men specifically, because on a hegemonic level men are expected to outsource managing their emotions to women and children instead of engaging in this work themselves, so general resources about self regulation are likely to be looked over by most men as not relevant or necessary for them.
but. like that is kind of the problem at the same time.
like the whole issue is men thinking they don't need to learn how to handle emotions (identifying them, processing them, expressing them, channeling them usefully, grounding themselves, addressing underlying issues, etc).
and then these kind of half-way measures that position tips as "mental health FOR MEN" "emotional regulation FOR MEN" inevitably ends up cross-pollinating with MRA style analysis where we get things like
"the MALE loneliness epidemic" (as if women do not also experience loneliness and alienation under current conditions), or
"men aren't allowed to cry" (as if women and children aren't berated and patronized for crying all the time & expected to "smile" for men), or
"men have the highest suicide rates" (implying that men are uniquely prone to being actively suicidal, glossing over that women attempt suicide more often)
which all ends up reinforcing this idea that men's emotions are bigger and more serious and urgent than anyone else's, and men need help to manage them, so "society" (women and children) must help them.
which just reproduces the exact social conditions that cause men to not learn how to manage their emotions in the first place.
This is what I was alluding to when I discussed that the volume of name changes you have to make as a trans person highlights the ridiculous amount of documentation attached to you.
the sad truth is that most children who are groomed are made into victims precisely because the adults around them treat them even worse than their groomer, at least at first. groomers specifically look for vulnerable children who don't have people in their lives they trust and can rely on. isolation is pretty much the number one factor these abusers look for when choosing their victims
Some people in asylums in the 50s were crazy. Some of them were psychotic, screaming at things nobody else could see. Some of them were aggressive, kicking and punching and biting without provocation. Some of them were a danger to themselves. Hell, some of them were a danger to others. And they were people. They were human beings. And all human beings deserve human rights, something those people, by law, didn't have.
Some people in mental hospitals now are crazy. Some of us are psychotic. Some of us are aggressive. Some of us are a danger to ourselves. Some of us are a danger to others. And we are still humans, who deserve human rights, which we legally do not have.
Some of us, a few of the crazy people you talk about, are exactly what you say we are. Psychotic, aggressive, a danger to ourselves and others. That doesnt change the fact that we are human. That doesnt change the fact that every individual human that exists, has ever existed, and will ever exist deserves human rights. That doesnt change the fact that we don't have those human rights in every situation. "Few of us are aggressive," while true as a statement, fails to acknowledge and insist that those of us who are still deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect as any other person.
people just hate children. it's a sorry state of affairs. they hate children being starved and bombed overseas. they hate children laughing and playing in the park. they hate their own kids, whom they popped out because social norms told them it was an obligate milestone for their own enrichment and not the creation of another human being whose life then takes priority over theirs. they don't want to be around children, they don't want to raise them, they are always foisting them onto someone else and no one wants to take them. they hate children even though we were all children once and most of us probably know, in some way or another, how withering it felt to be a hated child, whether it was some stranger on a bus telling us to shut up in an isolated incident or our parents resenting the fact that we existed. nothing will get better if we don't stop hating children and start seeing every child anywhere as a vulnerable citizen we ought to look out for. our society is only as healthy as the poorest, loneliest child in it.
