“I feel queasy” you coughed.

Murdoc grumbled, getting a glass of water from the bartender and handing it to you. “Drink this, then yer goin’ home luv”.

You sat down, sipping the water. “T-the room’s spinning, I don’t trust myself to make it home alone…” You slurred.

Murdoc sighed “Guess that’s alright, I’m bored of this shithole anyways”. He nodded, waving down a bartender to call a taxi to take you both back to Kong Studios.

In the taxi, you stared out the window, trying not to barf. You managed to make it into the driveway, stumbling to the outdoor trash bucket, throwing up into it. Murdoc pulled your hair back as you let everything out.

“Alright, luv. Let's go, ya ain't doing anybody any favors spewing out here.” He grabbed your wrist surprisingly softly. Leading you into the Studio and into your room. “Lay down” he let go of your wrist, pointing to your bed. You obliged. “Give me a sec” he said, leaving the room and returning with Gatorade, water, and painkillers. “You’re gonna drink these, and take those meds in the morning. Understand?”

You looked at him, still slightly dazed from the alcohol. “What’s got you like this…?”

“Me?” He replied “Like what?”

“Takin… taking care of me… bein’ so-soft…” You slurred, eyes drooping.

“First, don’t ever call me soft” he huffed. “Second, satan forbid, I want to make sure a pretty bird like you gets home safe. You’re part of this circus aren’t ya? Now good night”.

Murdoc moved to leave your bedroom. Stopping as you grabbed his sleeve. “Murdoc… stay?” You asked, tired and not wanting to sleep alone.

He looked you up and down “Bloody” he paused. “Fine luv, but don’t expect a bloody prince. I’m only makin’ sure you don’t die in your sleep or something”. He grumbled, secretly happy you wanted him there.

Murdoc got under the covers, facing away from you. “Good night,” he said, clicking off the light.

2:45 A.M

Blurry vision, stumbling down porch steps, your partner swinging at you. That’s pretty much the last thing you remembered. Now with a black eye and dizziness clouding your head, you stumbled over to a nearby bench. Sitting down, not knowing what to really do. You pulled your phone out of your pocket—a crack in the top right corner from landing on it while being shoved out the door. You called the only person you figured would be up this late… Murdoc Niccals. He wasn’t really your “friend” per se, but you knew each other decently well. He would frequent the music store you worked at, and you hooked up a few times. You told him about your partner a few times. How they got violent sometimes. Murdoc offered space with him if things went south. Now was the time to take him up on it… Hands trembling slightly, you called him.

Murdoc picked up on the last ring “Ey luv, it's late”.

Your voice wavered, as you tried not to cry as you spoke. “I-I know… but I need help… I got ki-kicked out…”

He picked up on your tone easily “Dear satan, are you hurt?”

“I got a little roughed up. I just need a place to sleep tonight. Didn’t know who else would be up this late…” You replied, gripping the phone tightly.

“Bloody… I’ll getcha alright? And if that fucking twit you call a partner hurt you” murdoc sighed “I will kill them myself. You’re such a sweet bird, shoulda left them when I said so before.”

You sniffled, the cold metal of the bench leaving goosebumps across your skin. “I… yeah you were right Murdoc… you’re always right…”

“Damn right I am. Be there in 10” he said, hanging up the phone.

You sat on that bench, curled into yourself, waiting for murdoc as it started to rain. It didn’t take long for him to pull up, the bass in his car so strong it nearly shook the thing. He rolled down the window “Get in luv. Let's go”.

You got up, wiping your face on your sleeve before getting in. Neither of you said much in the car, he just let you cry. Murdoc doesn’t know much about comforting people, but he wasn’t gonna let you sleep outside after being roughed up.

As he pulled into the park, Murdoc turned to you. “Ya can stay with me on one condition aight?”

You nodded.

“You’re dumping that bloody twit alright? Don’t like seein’ such a pretty bird like you hurtin’ ya understand?”

Murdoc led you inside as you nodded again. His place was messy, littered with empty bottles of booze and guitar picks. He picked up a shirt off a chair, giving it a sniff before handing it to you. “It's clean, and dry, change. I’ll getcha ice for that eye before it swells shut”.

You took the shirt, changing after he walked out of sight, then sat on the edge of his bed. When Murdoc came back he handed you a bag of ice, letting you take it and hold it against your eye. He got into bed. “Cmon luv… I won’t bite ya. Unless ya ask~” he motioned for you to come closer, trying to lighten the mood. You got under the covers with him, head resting against his shoulder. Murdoc stiffened. He's never had someone lean on him like that before.

“Thank you” escaped your lips in a whisper.

“Don’t worry about it luv. Just, try and get some rest yeah? We will handle the rest of this shit tomorrow yeah?” He responded.

You nodded against his shoulder, snaking an arm around him. Seeking some of Murdoc’s warmth. He placed a hand on top of yours, clicking off the light to let you two get some sleep.

“Goodnight…”

You slept in pretty late that day, phone off and door locked. Getting up that morning, still wrapped in a blanket, you made coffee. Walking past the front door, there was a note shoved under the door. Picking it up, it was still damp—either rain, or tears. You didn’t know, or care to be honest. The note was barely legible. Murdoc’s handwriting was naturally messy, but this rushed and smudgy note was barely legible, yet it read:

"I fucked up Y/N. I know I did... but I need you. Please contact me....”

Reading the note, a sigh escaped your lips. Sitting on the couch, you finally powered your phone back on. A frown crossed your face as you looked at the lockscreen looking back at you. It's a photo with friends, Murdoc’s smug smirk in the center. There was a litany of notifications on it. All from Murdoc… a stack of texts, 6+ missed calls, and voicemails. Listening to the voicemails, they were all different. Some were angry, blaming you. Some sad, almost begging. Almost like he was going through the stages of grief. One particularly stood out though.

The voicemail started with Murdoc's wavering voice “Cmon…. Luv please just say something, anything to me. Love me, hate me, anything.

Then a voice from far away piped up, must’ve been 2D.

“Murdoc… you’ve been doin’ too much. Quit wit it, leave them alone. Yer only making it worse”

Then the sound of a beer bottle slamming against a desk.

“Shut up ya nit-wit. I wasn’t askin' ya nothin’! If they ain’t gonna listen to any of this, I’m gettin’ ma keys back and talk face ta face.”

Putting the phone down on the kitchen counter with a sigh, there was a heavy knock at the door, then the click of the door lock. Good thing you hooked the chain lock on the top of the door too, it could only open an inch or so. Rushing to the door, your eye met Murdocs. His eyes were glossy and red, almost like he was… crying? That seems almost unbelievable. He was clutching something tight in his hands.

“Listen… listen luv, know you probably don’t want to see me. But just give me a minute yeah?” Murdoc said, handing you what he had in his hands. It was a bag of your favorite snack, and a photo strip, like one you would get at a photo booth. It was crinkled and folded, as if it were stuffed in a wallet. The photos were of you and him, both tipsy out on a night out.

Murdoc cleared his throat, getting your attention back so he could speak. “Listen, whatever ya thought I did that night… I didn’t okay. Got too wasted… went to puke in the bathroom at the bar, hit my head, and passed out.”

You rolled your eyes, arms crossed and not believing him. “How’d you even get back?”

“Manager or whatever the fuck called me a taxi… or some sorta ride back here… then i had to find my own home, wasn’t gonna freeze sleepin’ on ya doorstep like a puppy” he said a bit nervously, feeling you didn’t really believe him.“I swear to satan luv… I know I aint a good man… but I can’t lose you…” his eyes were wide, tears pricking the edges, practically pleading. Yet when you glanced between the photo strip in your hand and his face, he felt a flicker of something in his eyes. Hope?
