          Josephine doesn’t understand why he wants to make it up to her. She already told him it’s okay, because he clearly didn’t think about the traffic he has to deal with when picking up his son. She finds herself shaking her head at his words and raises her brows as he continues to speak. “Who told you that?” Josephine questions him, because in her eyes his manner seem just fine. She doesn’t like the fact that he tends to curse while his son is around, but he’s clearly working on that.

           “At least you’re trying, right? As long as you’re doing that, I would say you’re fine.” The blonde reassures him, offering him a smile as well before glancing back to Quentin, whom has finished eating by now. “Did you enjoy you, honey?” She asks the boy, who nods in excitement. 

          A long, jokingly forlorn sigh. “That’s a long list. This diner will close before I even count off half. One would be Lily.” It was obvious that Quentin did not know what was happening, though his eyes did brighten up at the mention of his mother. “Mommy?” The little boy asked, and Ace ran a finger through his curly hair almost distractedly. “Yeah, Q, Mommy.”

“Well, yes, but I did not believe that we would need to resort to violating the regulations of this wor—region.” Darn it, he really needs to remember that he can’t slip up around other-worlders. He must keep his language and word choice as careful as possible, unless he wants to deal with the massive repercussions. His eyes look back and forth between the sign and Ace, brows furrowed together in worry. “——I am still not sure. Would there not be any traps or alarms we might set off if we cross through here?”

“Some rules are just MADE to be broken.” Ace turned to regard the other with a smirk. “Besides, would you rather make the journey in a few hours or cut through a MEASLY LITTLE PATH and save three-quarters of the time?” Ace was not one to pry - if minding his business was a sport, he would be winning gold medals at the Olympics. But he could not help but raise an eyebrow at Zephyr’s slip of the tongue.

Davina never expected to be a single mother. For her douche of a boyfriend to run off the minute she had found out. She’ll never forget how scared and helpless she has been. Now it’s a year later and she’s got a beautiful little 3 month girl and an house all to herself. 

Ace had been her neighbor for the entire time she lived there. He was sweet and kind to her. He never judged her for her choices or the age she was. In fact, Ace had helped her out whenever she was in need. So when he came to her, needing a place to stay while his own brownstone was being renovated. She wishes she had another bedroom to offer him instead of the couch. She couldn’t imagine that being so comfortable. 

Davina found herself enjoying the company and if she’s being honest, the help. It was nice to have an extra pair of hands to help around the house. To occupy Ava as she cooked dinner or did the laundry. Ace had even started getting up in the middle of the night whenever Ava would wake up. It was different and she had no other words for it. 

She heard Ava stir and then the cry and the next thing she knew, Ace was up and going in to the room. She shook her head before throwing the blankets off her and heading into the room.

A small giggle left her lips as she observed Ace with Ava. “If her first words are shut it, I’m blaming you.”

The little girl had two qualities going for her: she was cute, and she also wasn’t Ace’s. For some reason, the obligation of having to take care of his own child shakes him to his core, yet he would voluntarily take care of Davina’s child in exchange for a good eventual night’s rest.

Poking his head over Ava’s crib with a scowl, he was surprised when the baby girl’s eyes immediately lit up upon seeing his face. With a tearful coo, she reached her chubby little hands up at Ace, demanding to be held and comforted by a trusted adult. He wasn’t her mother, but he would have to do!

“Hey,” He spoke with a tenderness he didn’t think himself capable of, reaching underneath the little girl to scoop her into his arms. She was a funny little thing, Ava; as soon as he placed her on his hip, her cries ceased for a moment and she moved to shove a chubby little fist into her drooling mouth. You didn’t have to guess what she wanted for long.

“Hungry? Me too.”

Ace heard Ava hot on his tracks before he saw her. Either way, he pretended to act surprised being caught in the act giving affection to her child as he always did. “It could be worse, way worse.”

scarlett ignored his comment. it had proven over the last few months that the best thing to do when he was being snarky was just to ignore him. it’d probably make her reunion and return of her dog go a lot faster, which she would be eternally grateful for. the quicker she was out of ace’s presence, the better. once the pup was eating, scarlett wasted no time in walking around the home, gathering his things. she’d quickly found his bed, his food, a few of his toys, but none of his clothes and treats. “where are all his clothes and shoes? and why wouldn’t you put his treats with his food?” scarlett sighed, going to put the items in her car before turning. “and his leash, please.”

as she walked around the house ace hopped onto the kitchen counter and pulled out a book he was reading before she showed up at his doorstep. wordlessly, he began to flip through the pages until he found where he left off. he didn’t mind that she walked around his house like she owned it still. she would never find a fraction of what she was looking for anyways.
