Radius — Arthurs Quay, Limerick

Although not particularly inspired by our surroundings at first glance, I noticed a dichotomy between the modern buildings and the much older ones.

Shannon River, King John’s Castle and its medieval bridge, Georgian buildings and… alas, there stood grey, grim buildings that looked completely out of place.

These different types of architecture coexist in a place where practicality & efficiency are priorities — aesthetics, on the other hand, don’t really seem to be of much concern anymore.

Most cities choose to preserve their history, and Limerick is no exception — old meets new & new meets old, therefore enabling those who are willing to look closer to discover a side of the city that had yet to be seen. A face of the city which will continue to evolve as time goes by: an ever changing canvas.

I was inspired by King John’s Castle, one of the city’s most popular landmarks, and wanted to “compare” it to the buildings that were built in recent years, as a way to show that they mirror each other — although separated by centuries, they are both a product of their times through their (wildly different) architectural style.
