These tags on a post of mine are making me claw at my skin and scream because YOU TOTALLY GET IT!!!! YES THANK YOUUUUUU THIS EXACTLY !!! That is the perfect explanation for why Flippy acts the way he does when he flips back in{?} to a normal state, and it's that he's still not in his right mind. Which is expected, because you don't just magically go back to normal when you're literally switching between different versions of yourself. Given that he switches to Fliqpy because it's essentially a trauma response from his PTSD/a form of self defense. Or if someone chooses to depict him that way, if you're switching between your main front and your alter due to a dissociative disorder like DID for example. But, that's a different conversation for those who have the disorder and whom choose to depict Flippy/Fliqpy that way to discuss. Tagger you're so fucking smart I love you brah AND YES I have many more ideas to share about how I view Flippy/Fliqpy! I plan to talk about it a lot more and go in depth about it when I'm not swamped with 500 things at once {Artfight LMFAO} and I'm also not being a lazy bum. I promise I'll draw it out one day! Hopefully maybe if I get medicated, I can actually draw tons of shit for my interpretation of Flippy {and the rest of the characters that I GAF about} that I've been saving in my mind for the past few years LMFAO. HI OP i am sooo glad you found my thoughts interesting!! was honestly kinda worried i was being annoying by just rambling in the tags umprompted but i'm happy that isn't the case. imo the writing in htf gives the audience just enough to be interested while still leaving plenty of room for the viewers to explore what isn't shown, so it's always really refreshing to come across other fans who feel similarly! this is especially true for flippy since he is such a unique character compared to most of the others, yet he shows up so infrequently that there's still a ton of room for interpretation. the question of whether or not he has did is a great example of this because there's enough evidence for either to be plausible, though for what it's worth, the writers only really started characterizing flippy and "fliqpy" as separate people in the later seasons. i personally like the idea that fliqpy isn't really his own entity as much as he's a hyper intense manifestation of flippy's fight response. despite his efforts to be kind and gentle and acclimate to civilian life, flippy is as every bit vengeful and sadistic as his wartime counterpart—because they're the same person! the difference is that flippy keeps it on a tight leash, cordoned off from the rest of his mind to be repressed until something inevitably triggers him and he loses control all over again. another way of putting it is that i view flippy as the "apparently normal part" and fliqpy as the "emotional part," terms which are primarily used in regards to did (if i'm not wrong), but are also applicable to ptsd. something that i almost never see people bring up in discussions about flippy as a character is that there isn't always a clear line between (c)ptsd and dissociative disorders like did. certain cases of complex ptsd, particularly those stemming from trauma as severe and seemingly inescapable as that which flippy must've endured, can and often do resemble dissociative disorders. in fact, it's hypothesized that the internal mechanisms causing dissociation in people with cptsd and osdd are very similar, if not the same! there's more i could say about this, but this is getting long enough so i'll probably end up making my own post about it later haha. speaking of, i have a different post analyzing flippy's design in my drafts that's currently sitting at... over 1k words (i got carried away lol), but it's nearly done so feel free to hang around if that's something you'd wanna read.
Hi-De-Ho! AND NO NO OH MY GOSH NOT AT ALL! You are an absolute delight, I am always so ecstatic to see people interact with my work! Even if it's in little ways, it brings me endless amount of joy AND YES YES YES Oh my gosh I can tell you've pondered about this entire subject and I am so in for it. Like you get it you get it, I almost have no words on how to respond because you're articulating my thoughts so well Also, yes! I think they mostly began characterizing them as different people in the later seasons/TV show because they were given more space, time, and money to be able to explore more of their characters. {See also, Petunia for a great example of this! Albeit she didn't get much development as one would hope.} Before, Flippy and Fliqpy seemed more like a gag than anything completely solid like they did in the TV show. As we've seen from how he could seemingly shift between Fliqpy and Flippy in an instant and naturally {Immediately going out of his state to eat a bloody fry, then go back INTO the state after swallowing, literally the entirety of Hide and Seek in which he only verbally sounds akin to Fliqpy, and so on}. He has changed a lot from the shorts compared to the actual show. I'm not sure if his older self has been retconned/considered non-canon entirely, or if it can still be considered canon and he just eventually got worse and worse as the episodes progress. Perhaps he began to lose more control, and that's what the gimmick with his eyes contracting is supposed to symbolize. Or maybe it's not that deep and I'm reading too much into it, considering HTF is a series made almost purely on jokes, funny "what ifs", and fun. But it's serious to me okay okay Let me have this
ALSO YES I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THAT! Personally to me I don't really see him with DID. Especially because I think it would be a liiiiittle bit insensitive to have him "heal" from it like he did in that one episode. Since that's not really how DID works. That and having his only alter be an "evil alter" isn't exactly good either LMFAO. But the conversation of HTF and the stereotypes of mental illness/disorders/disabilities and insensitivity regarding it is a WHOLLEEEEE 'nother conversation Like you said, it seems more like a manifestation rather than anything. A dissociation activated entirely on a trauma response triggered by reminders of the worst time of his life ever. Considering he is genuinely just getting Viet flashbacks every single time. And while I know that Kapow isn't really considered canon {it's canon to me finger over mouth emoji}, I feel like it ties things together well to have Fliqpy been "born" from Flippy being so traumatized in one moment that he gets in such an extreme Fight response that it manifests him into something else entirely. The Perfect Soldier, as I like to call it. Because I can bet that right now, the military would have LOVED to have a killing machine on their side to help defeat the enemy. And they would've capitalized off of that and used him to their advantage any chance they got. I'll put a cap on that before I just start rambling about my fanon interpretation and something something anti-military something something poster boy something something he's retired for a beautiful reason I do really really like your idea of Fliqpy being a deeply repressed part of Flippy, even in his day to day life. That not all of what Fliqpy is manifested of is purely just trauma, but from how Flippy is naturally. While to the core, he is clearly a very sweet and gentle person who likes unicorns and tea parties and pastries and falalala wonderland let's frolic in a field of flowers! It would be super interesting if there was this side of him where he is naturally vindictive, sadistic, and living on the edge. Like that's so good, I'm already pushing that into my Fliq/p/py interpretation THANK YOUUUUU I think it's far more interesting than there just being "Nice Pure Girly Flippy" and "Evil Fucking Bloodluster Fliqpy". It gives it more flavor, more nuance... you're a fucking architect I want you to know that But yes oh my god my ramble is going on for forever too FORGIVE ME!! I didn't have much of a peaceful sleep on a bench last night. But I still don't have much to have nights at the hotel and have food, I haven't eaten much in a few days. Please if you can donate what you can so I don't collapse in the heat again, I was close to death yesterday. Goal is $600!!!
