2YOU：しかし、ビレッジマンズストアが20周年って。 2YOU: I’m still in awe that Village Man’s Store has hit the 20 year mark.

水野ギイ：そんなの俺が一番思っていますよ（笑）。でもこうやって周りの人に言ってもらうことで自分たちでもようやく意識するようになったかも。俺たち、長くやっているんだなって（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: You’re telling me (laughs). The realization does actually sink in when I hear people say it outloud like this though. We’ve actually been at this for quite a while now, huh, wow (laughs).

2YOU：始めた頃は20年先のこととか想像していました？ 2YOU: Did you ever imagine you would still be here 20 years ago?

水野ギイ：当たり前にずっとバンドはやっているんだろうなって思っていました。だってバンドしかやることがないから。だから何も変わっていないっちゃ変わっていないし、でもちょっとずつ先のことが現実的になっているなとも思う。 Mizuno Gui: I did know that I would never stop rocking, it’s just in my nature. This band is all I have going for me after all. So nothing’s really changed at all, even though the future may be turning more and more into a reality every day.

2YOU：ギイさんはビレッジマンズストアが初めてのバンドでしたよね？ 2YOU: Village Man’s Store is the first and only band you’ve ever been in, correct?

水野ギイ：そうです。 Mizuno Gu: That’s right.

2YOU：バンドを始めたきっかけは？ 2YOU: What inspired you to start a band in the first place?

水野ギイ：スマブラばっかりやっていた田舎の中学生が20人くらい居て、その中のスマブラに飽きた5人がスマブラより面白いものを見つけたのがバンドだったんですよ。 Mizuno Gui: Back in the boonies we were among like the 20-something-ish other middle schoolers who were addicted to Smash Bros, but we were the 5 boys who got bored of it and went on to find something more interesting. That something turned out to be bands.

2YOU：ギイ少年たちをゲームからバンドに興味を移らせた初期衝動は何だったのですか？ 2YOU: What was it that spurred the little Gui and co. to shift from games to bands?

水野ギイ：最初はロックバンドが好きになったっていうより、ヤンキーの先輩がやっていたのがロックだっただけですよ。ヤンキーの先輩がやっているからイケてるんじゃないかって。「このバンドに出会って」とか「この曲に衝撃を受けて」じゃなくて、「ヤンキーの先輩がやっているからきっとかっこいいのだ」という刷り込みが発生して。 Mizuno Gui: At first it wasn’t as if we were deeply attracted to rock bands, it was more just that our yankee senpai was a rocker boy. We thought that rockers had to be something rad if the cool yankee senpai of ours was doing it. So it’s not as if we were inspired by a special band or were impacted by a special song or anything, it was more simply along the lines of imprinting. Like, “our yankee senpai is doing it so it’s gotta be cool.”

2YOU：それでバンドを始めたと。 2YOU: So that’s how the band came to be I see.

水野ギイ：それでスタジオとかに入るじゃないですか。そこでみんなで音を鳴らした瞬間に魔法が掛かった…という話ならかっこいいけれど、全然そんなことなかった（笑）。「何か違うなあ」から始まって、その「何か違う何か」を今もちょっとずつ修正していたら20年経っていました（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: Then as a freshly born band we instantly headed off to a studio to play together. There, it was supposed to be like, as soon as we hit a note together, normally it would be like we casted some kind of magic spell, and everything would magically come together, right….. If only our story was something cool like that, but the reality ain’t so simple (laughs). Since the start we’ve sensed that “Hey, something’s off” and have been slowly but surely working to fix that something for the past 20 years now (laughs).

2YOU：ちなみに初ライブは覚えていますか？ 2YOU: Do you remember what your first show was like?

水野ギイ：曖昧（笑）。結成20年って言っているけど、正直その20年も曖昧で。ビレッジマンズストアって名乗り出したのを逆算したら20年なのかなってくらいだし、中学校の学祭なライブが初ライブといえば初ライブだし。やっぱり我々は愛知県の田舎に住んでいたので、名古屋のライブハウスなんかイケてる奴しか出られないと思っていて。だからずっと「まだ早い、まだ早い」って言っていたんだけど、「CRAZY興業ってバンドがもうSONSET STRIPに出ているらしい」っていう噂を聞いて悔しがったりしていました（笑）。だからちゃんとライブハウスに出たのって、大学生になってから身内以外誰も観ていない状態で「俺たちもここまで来た」くらいの気持でUP SETでライブをしたのが初めてだと思う。 Mizuno Gui: Vaguely (laughs). We may have hit the 20 year mark, but in all honesty even these past 20 years are a blur to me. Counting back it has indeed been more than 20 years since we started rolling with the name Village Man’s Store, and if I were to say that something akin to a school festival show was actually our first gig then I wouldn’t even be lying. We had lived in a humble village down in Aichi prefecture, so the venues in the city of Nagoya had always seemed like a distant place where only people who were slick and stylish could perform at. So for a while we were under the impression that it was still too early for us, that we were still too young. Until we heard the rumor that the niche band “Crazy Kougyou” was already performing at the venue Sunset Strip, and felt scammed (laughs). And so the first time we performed at Club Upset was once we were already in college and totally unaware of anything that was going on outside of our little bubble.

2YOU：その頃ギイさんは名古屋のシーンをどう見ていました？ 2YOU: What did you think of the music scene of Nagoya back then?

水野ギイ：シーンなんか何も見えていなかったです（笑）。周りにバンドをやっている友達もいなかったし本当に何も知らなかった。だから今思うと恥ずかしいんですけど、初めて東京でライブをしようと思ったときも、東京のライブハウスなんて知らないし大きさも分からないから、好きなアーティストが出しているDVDを観てO-EASTとかにいきなり電話するっていう（笑）。丁寧に「資料を送って下さい」って言われましたけど（笑）。あとSHIBUYA-AXにも電話しましたね（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: I was totally out of the loop (laughs). I had no friends who were in a band or anything either so I knew absolutely nothing about what was going on. It’s embarrassing to think about now but, back when we first decided to do a show in Tokyo I was unaware of what the venues there were like. The size, the capacity, all that jazz. So I had just examined the DVDs of my favorite artists, saw the venue name O-EAST, and picked up the phone and dialed them up (laughs). They were polite enough to tell me “Please send us your profile documents” though (laughs). I had even dialed up SHIBUYA-AX too (laughs).

2YOU：あははは。AXなんてキャパ1700人ですよ（笑）。 2YOU: Ahahaha. The capacity of AX is a whole 1700 people (laughs).

水野ギイ：だって大きいライブハウスのライブしかDVDになってないじゃないですか（笑）。だからそれも刷り込みですよね。結局バンドを今でも当たり前にやっていることを含めて、全部刷り込みです。 Mizuno Gui: Well the only shows that get made into DVDs are the ones at big venues, so (laughs). But this too was all part of the imprinting process. The fact that being in a band is just second nature to me too is all thanks to this “imprinting”.

2YOU：バンドをやっていることが当たり前なら、辞めようと思うこともなかった 2YOU: Then have you never wanted to quit the band, seeing as of how its second nature?

水野ギイ：瞬間的な「辞めてやる！」はあったかもしれないけど、バンドを辞めることを想像しても現実味が全然なくて。今の生活とか、今の気持とか、それが変化することに実感が沸かないんですよ。だから辞めるっていう発想自体がないのかも。 Mizuno Gui: There’s been momentary spurts wherein I go “I’m done with this shit!” but, quitting doesn’t actually feel real at all to me. My current life, my current mental state… I could never even fathom what it would be like to throw a spanner into it all. The concept of quitting just isn’t hardwired into my brain.

2YOU：そんな中、メンバーの脱退も経験してきたと思いますが。 2YOU: Despite that, you’ve dealt with other members leaving.

水野ギイ：最初の頃はメンバーが1人変わったらもう別物になってしまったと思っていたし、自分が好きなバンドのメンバーが変わったときに色んな気持ちになったこともあるけど、自分がいざこのバンドを20年やってきて、確かにメンバーは変わったけど、ちゃんと引き継がれている何かがそこには絶対あるってことに自分で気付いたから、変な言い方になっちゃうかもしれないけど、メンバーが変わったんじゃなくて、メンバーが増えたって思っているんですよ。誰かが死んだときに減るんでしょうけど。でも生きている限り、メンバーは増えているんです。だから最近で言えば荒金祐太朗が休んだりしたけれど、減った気持ちがないからずっと待てたんだろうなって思う。 Mizuno Gui: At first I used to think that when 1 guy left that it would spell change for the whole. For when members of my favorite bands have retired it’s always left me with complicated feelings. Yet even though it’s a fact that our band members have indeed changed over time, after doing this band thing for 20 years, I realized that in the end we’ve inherited something- something special- from each and every one of them. Now this might be a strange way to put it but, I don’t feel as though our band members have changed at all. Rather, I feel as though we’ve simply gained more members. If one of them died then that would mean they’re gone for real. But as it stands now, so long as they’re alive and kicking out there somewhere, then to me all that means is that we’ve gained a member. In terms of recent events, a while ago our Arakane Yuutaro had gone on sabbatical. I think the main reason we were able to wait patiently for his return was because it didn’t feel as if we had ever truly lost him.

2YOU：赤いスーツに袖を通したことがある奴は例えそこにいなくとも一生ビレッジマンズストアだと。 2YOU: So long as they’ve put their arm through the sleeve of a red suit, then they’ll forever be a member of Village Man’s Store, whether they’re present or not.

水野ギイ：うん。俺はそう思っていますね。 Mizuno Gui: Yeah. That’s how I feel at least.

2YOU：そうやってみんなでビレッジマンズストアを続けてきた中で生まれた数々の楽曲が今回再録で生まれ変わっていますが、自分たちの楽曲を今のビレッジマンズストアで再構築することで気付いたことはありますか？ 2YOU: And so all the songs you created together as Village Man’s Store have been recorded and reborn. Was there anything new that came to light when recreating your songs as the current Village Man’s Store?

水野ギイ：大人になりきれないことが最高だなってことを再確認する作業だったのかなって思う。根底にあるガキ臭さみたいなものが昔の自分たちに負けないほど全員が全員持っていたのが面白かったですね。例えば新しく入ったウエムラは、20年やってきて今の自分が最高だって思っている奴らとバンドをやっているっていう確認の場所でもあったのかなって。だって再録って普通ちょっと落ち着くじゃないですか。アレンジが大人になったり。でも出来上がった音源を聴いたら、以前より明らかにガチャガチャしていて（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: Never truly growing up really is the greatest thing ever. I’ve always known this but working on the album just reconfirmed the fact for me. In the studio each and every one of us had a certain young, wild spirit and even brattiness to us that would make even our old selves jealous. That to me was so hilarious. On top of that I think it may have also been a learning experience for our recent addition, Uemura, to realize that he’s in a band with a bunch of folks who’ve been doing this shit for 20 years and think they’re at their peak. ‘Cause rerecording is normally supposed to be something more chill. The music is supposed to get more mature. Yet when I listened back to our recordings, all our playing was blatantly more busy than it’s ever been before (laughs).

2YOU：最高じゃないですか。 2YOU: Now that’s something special.

水野ギイ：最高なんですよ。 Mizuno Gui: It really is something special.

2YOU：再録ってファン目線で考えると嬉しさと戸惑いの両方ある気がして。原曲に思い入れがあればあるほど。 2YOU: I feel as though, from a fan’s point of view, rerecordings often fill you with both joy and confusion. The more so the more attached to the original song you are.

水野ギイ：めっちゃ分かる。だから俺、今回、色んな再録アルバムを聴きまくったんですよ。「ここは良かったな」「ここは変えないで欲しかったな」っていうのを研究したし、音質は良くなっているのに音源としては悪くなった気持ちになっちゃうのは何故だろうとか。 Mizuno Gui: Oh I get that. Which is exactly why I had listened to a bunch of rerecording albums before making ours. I put research into what made me feel “Oh that was a great idea” or what made me “Oh it would’ve been better if they never changed that part”. On top of why is it that despite improvements to the overall quality of the music, as a pure recording sometimes albums will somehow just get worse.

2YOU：同感です。 2YOU: I understand that.

水野ギイ：きっと思い出補正もあるんだろうけれど。だから再録することで聴いてくれる人にがっかりされないような作品にすることは意識しましたね。 Mizuno Gui: I’m sure it’s all partly due to nostalgia, but still I was careful not to disappoint anyone who listens to our music.

2YOU：どのように選曲したのですか？ 2YOU: What went behind the decision of which songs to include?

水野ギイ：まずは今までリードにした曲やシングルにした曲を結構昔まで遡って再録しました。あとは昔ってリード曲以外あまり他の曲をバランス的に推せなかったから、そういうアルバムからはちょっと多めに選曲しています。さらに今でもライブで胸張ってやっている曲なんかをあまり時系列は気にしないでチョイスしました。正直、自分たちの曲に対して優劣がないんですけど、やっぱり今でもよくライブでやっている曲が音源的には古かったりするから、ぶっちゃけあまり音源を聴かせたくないなって思う部分もあって。例えば「あの曲、何処で聴けるんですか？」って言われてもあまり教えたくないみたいな。それを胸張って聴いて貰えるように今の俺たちで音源にしたかったのもありますね。 Mizuno Gui: We went back on our previous lead songs and singles first. Then, I was never particularly partial towards any one song besides our lead songs so, I picked all my many favorites from our previous albums. Decades old songs we’re still proudly performing even now were also included in the mix, without much consideration for chronological order or anything. To be honest I view all of our songs equally, but some of those old songs we still do are pretty dated in terms of recording quality, and to be frank with you, part of me never really wanted anyone to listen to those old things. Even when people would ask me “Where do I listen to that song you guys did today?” I never really wanted to tell them. Being able to hold my head high and have people listen to them anew was another driving force that led us to our decisions.

2YOU：当時の音源は当時の音源でしか味わえない良さが絶対にあると思うのですが、この20年間でバンドやお客さんと一緒に、曲も一緒に成長してきているじゃないですか。 2YOU: Though there definitely can be a charm to dated recordings. They have that special something, something unique to the time when they were recorded. But I’m sure that your songs have long since grown alongside you and your audience over the span of these past 20 years.

水野ギイ：うん。 Mizuno Gui: Yeah.

2YOU：その20年間でライブで加わったアレンジだったり、お客さんのレスポンスから生まれたものだったり、そうやって進化してきた曲が音源に落とし込まれている気がしました。 2YOU: I was overcome by the sense that you incorporated the evolutions your songs have undergone over the years as well, be it rearrangements done for your concerts or additions made on behalf of your audience’s reactions.

水野ギイ：そうですね。あと俺たちは音楽エリートじゃないから、文法的に間違っていたり理論的に間違っていた部分もあって。それも良さだったりするんだけど、今の俺たちが聴いて「これは違うな」って思った部分の軌道修正はしていますね。 Mizuno Gui: That’s true. We’re not elites when it comes to music either so there were some errors with our musical syntax and music theory. Which can have its appeal, but the parts which just totally felt off to us we deigned to put back on track.

2YOU：歌詞に関してはどうですか？ 2YOU: What about the lyrics?

水野ギイ：ライブでずっと歌っていますけど、歌詞カードだったり文字として見直すことがあまりなかったから、改めて歌詞を読んでみて「変わってねえな」って感じでした。勿論未熟な部分はあるんですけど、ふざけ方、真面目になり方、真面目さのごまかし方とか、その辺はあまり変わってないなと。 Mizuno Gui: I’m constantly singing them live, so when I went back and checked the text or the lyric booklet, I just went “Wow, jackshit has changed”. Of course the lyrics are childish in some places, the songs were written when I was so young. Yet nevertheless, the ways in which I chose to horse around, the ways I got serious, or even the ways I pretended to get serious… At its core none of it’s really changed over the years.

2YOU：変わったなと思う部分はありますか？ 2YOU: What do you feel has changed?

水野ギイ：これ、2YOU MAGAZINEだから話せることなんですけど、『刃の上を君と行く』っていうアルバムがあるんですけど、正直音源的にはあまり気に入っていなくて。 Mizuno Gui: I can only say this because you’re 2YOU Magazine but, to be honest I was never fond of the recording of our album “Yaiba no Ue wo Kimi to Yuku”.

2YOU：でもあのアルバムが所謂ターニングポイントだったような印象もあります。 2YOU: I thought that album was largely considered a turning point for Village Man’s Store.

水野ギイ：うん、そうなんですよ。でもあの頃って自分たちがまだ自分たちのことをちゃんと理解出来ていなかったんです。だからメンバーの意思が作品にあまり反映されていないんですよね。本当に何も分かっていなかったから、メンバー個々の意見は一旦置いておいて、当時のプロデューサーの言うことを聞いて作った作品なので、「夢の中ではない」とかは今回の再録で自分たちらしさがやっと形に残せたなって思っています。 Mizuno Gui: Yeah, that’s true. But we didn’t actually understand ourselves back then. My bandmates and my ideas weren’t properly reflected into the album. We literally didn’t understand ourselves nor anything at all, so my bandmates and I had just put our ideas aside and listened to whatever our producer at the time had told us to do. This time around, however, we were finally able to put our true selves and our true style into our song, “Yume no Naka dewa Nai”.

2YOU：なるほど。でもそうやって作った『刃の上を君と行く』が結果的にはバンドを世に知らしめるきっかけにもなったと思うんですよね。 2YOU: I see. It’s incredible how despite that, Yaiba no Ue wo Kimi to Yuku turned out to be the piece which caused your band to gain traction.

水野ギイ：逆に自分達でも世に出ていっているタイミングだと分かっていたからそれをしたっていうのもあって。言ってしまえばそれまでは遊びのような感覚でやっていたけれど、レーベルがついて、最初は言う事を聞かなきゃなって作った音源だったんですよね。でもそのお陰で凄く独特な音源になっているとは思います。音色ひとつにしても当時は凄くクリーンだし。 Mizuno Gui: I think back at the time we decided it was best not to be too bold because we knew it was our big chance. To be frank, we were only really treating our band as a plaything up until then, it was only after we got a label that we locked in and understood the importance of listening to whatever they bid us to do. And it was indeed thanks to them that the album turned out to be as unique as it did. The sound was very clean for its time.

2YOU：確かにめっちゃ綺麗ですよね。殆ど歪んでいないし。 2YOU: It was indeed very crisp.

水野ギイ：だから結構周りのバンドマンに「ビレッジみたいなロックをやっていて何でこんなにクリーンなの？」って聞かれましたからね。 Mizuno Gui: The other artists I knew at the time even asked me “Why’s it so clean, what happened to your usual dirty rock style?”

2YOU：例えばさっきの「夢の中ではない」も当時の楽曲と今回の再録を聴き比べると凄く面白いですよね。普通再録で綺麗になったり、落ち着いたりするじゃないですか。ビレッジマンズストアに関してはうるさくなっているっていう。 2YOU: Comparing the original “Yume no Naka dewa Nai” with the new version makes for quite the treat as well. Normally rerecordings tend to be more clean, more refined and established. Yet for you, your songs just got even more crazy.

水野ギイ：あははは。俺たちらしいでしょ？（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: Ahahaha. But it’s just so “us” that way, wouldn’t you agree? (Laughs).

2YOU：2枚組のフルボリュームなので、例えばどちらかが激しくて、どちらかが優しい作品になったりするじゃないですか。でも結局どっちもうるさいなと（笑）。 2YOU: The album boasts not one but two CDs, it’s a complete set, so one may expect one half to be intense and the other to be of the softer variety. But no, both are crazy (laughs).

水野ギイ：本当は激しい盤、そうじゃない盤みたいに分けたつもりだったんですよ。スタッフからは「2枚に分けるテーマが何かあるんですよね」と言われて、自分の中で2枚に分ける要素って何か考えたときに、俺がただ外に対してフラストレーションを放っているような攻撃している曲を「撃つ」、バンドは俺ひとりじゃ出来ないよなって曲を「遊」として「遊撃」にしたら凄くうちっぽくなるよなって。でも結果的にどっちもうるさかった（笑）。「両方ガチャガチャしとんのかい」って（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: I actually did intend to delegate one side as the intense and crazy one, with the other side being less so. Yet after listening to it someone who works with us asked me “Surely you must’ve had an overlying theme for each CD?,” and it made me think back on what exactly was behind my thought process. The first side has all songs that are simply me venting my frustrations over external aspects; songs that are me on the offense. I decided that they fall under the “shooting(撃つ)” category. While songs that really highlight the fact this band is something I couldn’t do alone fall under the “playing around(遊)” category. Put together they make the word 遊撃 (translation: raid). Putting playtime and aggression together to create something new is just so us. Though it’s true that both sides of the album did turn out to be equally crazy anyway (laughs). Like, “Hey, what’s the point of splitting the songs up if it’s all just gonna be rough and heavy anyway?!” (Laughs).

2YOU：バラードも結局うるさいですから。 2YOU: Even your ballads are loud and crazy after all.

水野ギイ：そういう曲をレコーディングしていても「シンバルあげてください」「一番キンキンした音にしてください」って言っている奴がいるので（笑）。でも結局俺もそれを求めているんですよね。ドラムの音色も曲ごとに分けていないんですよ。いつもだったら曲に合わせてドラムセットも結構変えるんですけど、今回は殆ど音色も変わっていなくて。全編通して同じ音質で耐え得るというか、そういう曲しかやりたくないんですよね。全部「ドカーン！」としたかったんです。だから改めて聴き比べたらよく分かりますよ。今の方がうるさいですから（笑）。だから俺は再録がしたかったというより、今のライブをアルバムにしたかったんだと思う。今のライブのイメージのまま具現化したいだけなのでライブと違う変なアップデートはしないっていうバランス感覚。それをどの曲でも目指しましたね。 Mizuno Gui: Whenever we record ballad-type songs someone always ends up saying something along the lines of “Can I have some cymbals here,” or “Make it as clinky and clangy as possible,” (laughs). And it ain’t as if I didn’t want that either. Oh, for the rerecordings we also didn’t tinker with the tone of the drums for each song. Normally we swap the drums around for every other song and stuff, but that wasn’t really the case this time around. We wanted to maintain the same energy throughout the entire duration of the album, or rather, actually we just didn’t want to do songs that weren’t rough and heavy. We wanted everything to have a real “bang!” to them. That’s probably the main reason why it’s obvious that the new versions are just way louder and crazier (laughs). For we wanted to turn our modern day concerts into an album rather than to redo our songs. I wanted to manifest the vibes our shows have, raw and unadulterated, thus there’s no weird updates different from our usual shebang. This applies to every song as well.

2YOU：だからライブのセットリストが、どの曲もフラットに並んだような感覚もあるんですよね。 2YOU: No wonder even your concert set lists feel as if each individual song is laid out flat.

水野ギイ：ああ、嬉しいですね。まさにフラットな状態でライブをやりたいんですよ。ライブのセットリストを組むときって一番新しい曲を何個か入れた上で何をやるか結構悩むんですけど、20年やってきて、もはやどうでもいいというか。どの曲もフラットになったんだから何でもやれるというか。だから20周年の集大成でありながら、ライブの入門編でもるんですよね。だからライブ音源ではないけれど、めっちゃ綺麗に録ったライブ音源みたいなイメージで聴いてもらえたらなと。 Mizuno Gui: Wow, I’m happy to hear that. I’m always trying to keep our concerts flat and consistent. Whenever I design our set lists and it’s time to slot in our newest songs, it’s always a struggle figuring out how to best fit them in. But after 20 years I don’t really care anymore. All of our songs correspond with each other, so we can really do any track and it will just work. So this album is both a comprehensive compilation and a gateway to our concerts. The album may not be a recording of our concerts but I would love it if people listening imagined the songs as like clean and polished live versions.

2YOU：最近のライブを観ていると、大人になるどころかどんどんガキに戻っている感じもしていて。そんなライブをしている癖に再録アルバムが落ち着く訳ないと思っていたけれど、さっきも言った通り、しっかりうるさいアルバムになっていて、「そりゃそうか」って思いました。 2YOU: Recently whenever I see one of your shows, I notice that rather than maturing with age you’re actually turning back into kids again. So it would’ve been foolish to imagine that folks as crazy as you would make a best hits-type album that’s something clean and boiled down. And in the end you really didn’t betray my expectations.

水野ギイ：昔の音源の方が大人に憧れていた分、スカしていますからね。それはそれで好きなんですけど、大人になった今の方がオラオラしているのは俺たちらしくて良いなって思います。 Mizuno Gui: The way we wanted to grow up fast and be like the people we looked up to had made our past recording a bit dweeby. And that does add a certain charm to it but, now that we’re all grown up we’re way more jumpy and punchy and in-your-face. And that’s just so “us”.

2YOU：ライブ中、メンバー間もオラオラしていますもんね。 2YOU: You and your bandmates are very jumpy and punchy on stage after all.

水野ギイ：それぞれが整合性の取れないレベルで自分がナンバーワンだと思っていますからね。でもそれが本当に面白くて。なんかみんな、ずっとうるさいなって（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: Well, we each all think we’re the best, at a totally contradictory level. But that’s what’s so hilarious. All of us need to shut up, and it’s great (laughs).

2YOU：バンドって団体戦だから、「ここは誰がいく」「最後は誰がキメる」みたいな部分もあるじゃないですか。でもビレッジマンズストアは誰も譲らないから（笑）。 2YOU: Bands are supposed to be a team, so usually one person will take care of one part while someone else will handle the next big moment. You guys, however, each refuse to get out of the spotlight (laughs).

水野ギイ：俺も含めてメンバー全員が基本的に目立つことが礼儀だと思っているから（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: My bandmates and I both believe that standing out and making a bang is courtesy (laughs).

2YOU：そして今回、再録楽曲を聴いて感じたのは、これまでビレッジマンズストアとして一緒にプレイしてきたメンバーたちのことで。 2YOU: Listening to the rerecordings also made me reminisce about the other musicians who had once been a part of Village Man’s Store.

水野ギイ：うん。 Mizuno Gui: Yeah.

2YOU：この作品やライブではもう鳴っていない彼らの音が、鳴っていないことで改めてその存在を感じさせるなと。 2YOU: They, whose notes are no longer heard within this piece nor shows, make their presence known even more so via their absence.

水野ギイ：俺はバンドのメンバーが鳴らしてきた音、メロディーを全部分かっているんですよ。全部分かっているし、全部歌える。ギターのフレーズがこうで、ベースがこうでって、全部分かっているんですよね。分かっていた上で、改めて「あいつは何を考えて弾いていたのかな」とか、そういうことも今更分かったりして。みんな本気でやっていたんだなって。それを再確認出来たかな。鳴っていた音に無駄なんてなかったし、その上で今鳴っている音にも無駄な音なんてひとつもない。みんなうるさいですけど（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: I still remember exactly how their notes and their melodies sounded. I know everything they did, and I can sing every last bit of it. I remember how his guitar phrases went like this, I remember how his bass went like that, I know it all, lock, stock, and barrel. Because I know, I’m able to, finally, now that it’s too late, understand what they were thinking about back when they were playing. They had put their all into whatever they did. Now I truly get that. They never did anything random or without purpose, which is why we up to this day refuse to do anything without purpose either. Though we might get a little loud and crazy (laughs).

2YOU：これだけうるさくても、それがぶつかり合っていないのは、きっと全員が同じ方向に向かって放ちまくっているからだと思います。 2YOU: You’re loud and crazy and yet you manage to not trample each other over. I can tell that you must be all at least shooting in the same direction.

水野ギイ：確かにそういう意味では相乗効果になっているのかも。あのね、ビレッジマンズストアのメンバーって全員優しいんですよ。さっき「全員自分がナンバーワンだと思っている」って話をしたけれど、ちゃんと俺の得意なとこは俺にやらせてくれるんです。きっとこのバンドでいつもわがままを言っているのは俺なんですよ。例えば曲名を考えたり、イベントを考えたり、言ってしまえば全部俺なんですよ。でもそれがバンド全体の言葉になるじゃないですか。 Mizuno Gui: In that sense we do have synergy. But uhm, every member of Village Man’s Store is actually a sweet, good guy. I did say that we each all think we’re the best earlier, but they do actually let me do the things I’m good at. I’m the spoiled, selfish one who is always getting what I want. In the end it’s usually always me who comes up with our songs names, our events, all that. And then my words come to represent our band as a whole.

2YOU：なるほど。 2YOU: I see.

水野ギイ：俺が決めたことをメンバーは自分の言葉のように言わなきゃいけないじゃないですか。でも例えば俺が「馬鹿なことしようぜ」っていうタイトルにしたら、全員がちゃんと馬鹿なことをしてくれるメンバーなんですよ。そういう奴らなんですよ。 Mizuno Gui: When I make the decisions, my bandmates are then forced to treat my words as their words, right. But for example, if I make the title “Let’s act stupid”, all my mates will commit to acting stupid. That’s just how they are.

2YOU：そういう意味ではバンドってみちづれですよね。 2YOU: In that sense you and your bands really are “Michizure” - destiny bound suicide buddies.

水野ギイ： 本当に。俺、今回の「みちづれ」気に入っているんですよ。 Mizuno Gui: So true. I’m quite fond of how our song “Michizure”, came out.

2YOU：それはもう何と言っても荒金祐太朗さんのギターが加わっていますから。 2YOU: That must be because Arakane Yuutaro played the guitar.

水野ギイ：それね。それはやっぱり嬉しい。それもあるし、「みちづれ」という曲が俺にとってはこれから音源を作っていく上でバランス的にも指針となっていく曲だと思っていて。各々が好きなことをちゃんとやった上で、しっかりとまとまっている。それって俺たちがずっと目指していたことだったんですよね。これまでのメンバーとも、今のメンバーとも、ずっと。 Mizuno Gui: Yeah that. That part definitely does make me happy. The other important thing to me though is that the balancing of the music is so perfect that it now serves as the guideline for the direction I want our recordings to go. In it we’re each committed to our individual indulgences, while still maintaining congruity. It’s a level that we’ve strived to reach for since. Be it with our previous members or our current ones, since forever ago.

2YOU：先程「メンバーが増えた感覚」という話もありましたけど、この20年間のビレッジマンズストアを全部抱きしめて今を走っていることがはっきり分かることが俺はただただ嬉しいです。 2YOU: You said before that “It feels like we got more members,” and you guys really are embracing your past as you keep pushing forward. That alone I’m so glad to hear.

水野ギイ：さっきも言ったけど、クレジットに名前が増えていく感覚はあるので。今回、別にクレジットに入れたりはしていないし、現に演奏もしていないけど、名前がどんどん足されている感覚は俺の中であるので。 Mizuno Gui: It feels like the number of names on my credit keep increasing. *** They’re not actually entered in my credit* and they’re not performing with us anymore but, the names are there and still growing. It’s getting filled with names.

2YOU：ライブを観ていても「北斗の拳」の無想転生みたいに今の5人の後ろに今までのメンバーの顔が浮かんでいるんですよ。それを全部まとっているから今の5人のビレッジマンズストアがこんなにも強いんだなと思います。 2YOU: When I go to your shows, I feel as though your old bandmates are floating behind the 5 of you, in the style of the Muso Tensei from Fist of the North Star (https://hokuto.fandom.com/wiki/Muso_Tensei).

水野ギイ：そう言って貰えると本当に嬉しいです。 Mizuno Gui: I’m really happy to hear that.

2YOU：それでは今日はギイさんひとりなので、この場を借りてメンバーひとりひとりにメッセージをもらってもいいですか。 2YOU: Alright. Since you came alone today, I would love to ask you to put in a message about each of your bandmates.

水野ギイ：やだ。 Mizuno Gui: No way.

2YOU：やだ。 2YOU: No way.

水野ギイ：嫌だ。 Mizuno Gui: No way jose.

2YOU：では坂野充さんから。 2YOU: Tell us about Banno Mitsuru first then.

水野ギイ：嫌だって言っているんだけどなあ（笑）。まあ、充くんは居てくれないと俺が成り立たないです。バンドじゃなくて、俺が成り立たない。逆に俺は充くんの凄さを世間に知らしめてあげたい。充くんって自分のことを縁の下の力持ちみたいなつもりで思っていると思うけど、傍から見て全然そうじゃないことも伝えたい。ビレッジマンズストアというバンドは充くん中心のバンドだって本人には思ってもらいたい。それくらいバンドの中心人物だと思っています。 Mizuno Gui: I said no way, I don’t wanna, didn’t I (laughs). Well, without Mitsuru-kun I would fall apart. Not the band, but me, it’s me as an individual who would fall apart. And I want to show the world how incredible Mitsuru-kun is. Mitsuru-kun seems to think of himself as the unsung hero, but I want him to know that he’s just a straight up hero. I want him to know that Village Man’s Store revolves around him. Because that’s how much of a core member to this band he is.

2YOU：次は岩原洋平さん。 2YOU: What about Iwahara Youhei.

水野ギイ：岩ちゃんは面白過ぎるくらい俺と反対なんです。全てにおいて真逆。だから意見もぶつかるのも岩ちゃんで。でも俺は凄く尊敬していて。俺が苦手なことを全部出来るから、凄く頼りにしています。その代わりお前の出来ないことは俺に任せてくれよっていう気持ちも凄く強いです。俺にとって、リスペクトと対抗心が同時に生まれる男ですね。0から1を作ることは岩ちゃんはあまりしないけど、1を100にするのは俺よりも上手い。そういう男です。 Mizuno Gui: Iwa-chan is the opposite of me, to the point that it’s hilarious. We’re complete and total opposites in every regard. If I have an opinion then Iwa-chan’s bound to clash with it, and vice versa. Yet I respect him. He can do everything I can’t, and I rely on him tons. In turn I want him to count on me to take care of all the crap he can’t do, leave it to me I can handle it. He’s someone who incites both my defiant, rebellious spirit and my respect both, simultaneously. Iwa-chan isn’t very good at turning things from a 0 into a 1, but he’s better than me at turning that 1 into a 100. That’s the type of guy he is.

2YOU：ではウエムラさん。 2YOU: Next is Uemura.

水野ギイ：ウエムラはとにかく馴染むのが早かった。馴染むって言ったら良くないかもしれないけど、ちゃんと横を見ながら頑張ってくれたんだなっていう気持ちが彼にはあって。こんなにもがんがんツアーをやるバンド、頭が狂っているんですよ。でもそんなこと考える瞬間もなく、そのまま狂いに来てくれた凄さがウエムラにはあって。何にでも躊躇なく飛び込む姿勢とか、偏見なく自分もその輪の真ん中に入っていくこととか、そういう才能があるから何の躊躇いもなくビレッジマンズストアに入って来てくれたんだと思う。俺はヴォ―カリストとして、ウエムラみたいな人間になりたいのかもしれない。 Mizuno Gui: Uemura wasted no time fitting in. Maybe it’s bad to call it “fitting in” but, I know that he did feel the need to be constantly mindful of us, and that he did his best to match our vibes. Any band who tours as much as we do are insane people, yet he just instantly joined in on the insanity, without even a second thought, and that’s Uemura for you. The way he dives headfirst into things with zero hesitation, the way he’s welcomed into the fray without facing judgement… a talent he has. That’s one of the reasons why he was able to seamlessly join Village Man’s Store. As a vocalist I wish I could be like him.

2YOU：そして帰ってきた荒金祐太朗さん。 2YOU: The returned Arakane Yuutaro.

水野ギイ：祐太朗は凄く優しい。超ギターヒーローなんだけど、きっとあいつの原動力は俺と一緒で、憧れでやっている節があって。そういうところのギャップを感じてしまう時って絶対あると思う。俺も自分と憧れのギャップを感じることがあるから。それを我慢して、ストレスに感じていない振りをするくらい優しいから、心がチグハグになってしまったんだと思う。だから俺がこれから祐太朗にしてあげることはひとつしかないです。あいつの憧れのままで俺がいることです。あいつはシンプルに俺のファンだから。そして俺もそんなあいつのファンだから。だからもっと我儘にやれる場所を俺が作ってあげるよっていう。 Mizuno Gui: Yuutaro is just so sweet. He’s a real guitar hero, and his motivations probably stem from the same places as mine: the people who inspired him are what keep him going. And due to that I sense that he definitely feels detached from our band sometimes. Sometimes I feel super distant from who I want to be too. Yet he’s kind enough to grin and bear it, even going so far as to pretend that it doesn’t stress him out. I think that’s why his mental state broke down, because he’s just too nice for his own good. Which means that there’s only one thing left for me to do for Yuutaro. I simply must continue to be the me whom he looks up to so. For he’s a fan of mine. And I’m a fan of his as well. So it’s up to me to create a safe environment for him to be less selfless and more and more selfish.

2YOU：まさに「勝手にしやがる」に込められたメッセージですよね。 2YOU: That’s the exact message behind your album “Katte ni Shiyagaru (lit. We Do What We Wanna Do” as well, I see.

水野ギイ：そうですね。あれはもう祐太朗へのメッセージなので。 Mizuno Gui: That’s right. The message of the song was meant for Yuutaro.

2YOU：しかしギイさん、メンバーのことをよく見ていますね。 2YOU: Gii-san, you really do keep a good eye on your bandmates.

水野ギイ：好きですからね。この感情をメンバーだけじゃなくて色んな人に向けていきたい。それがあまり俺はこれまで出来ていなかったのかもしれない。友達にもお客さんにも、それが出来るような人間になりたい。難しいんだろうけど。 Mizuno Gui: Because I love them. And I want to extend this feeling to other people too, rather than only my bandmates. I realized that I’ve maybe never really done that much before. I want to be someone capable of extending my love to my friends and our audience as well. It’s a tough road ahead but.

2YOU：ギイさんにとってお客さんはどんな存在だったりしますか？ 2YOU: What are your fans to you?

水野ギイ：時によって違うかも。ライブをやっている時は味方だったりもするし、なんなら敵のときもある。敵っていうかライバルか。あ、インターネットにいる奴は敵です。でもそいつらが居なかったらガソリンが切れていたかも。色んな感情を生んでくれる存在だから。そんなことをこの20年間ずっと思っているかもしれない（笑）。だって変わらないですもん。未だにホテルからテレビを投げ捨てたい気持ちだってあるから（笑）。 Mizuno Gui: It depends. During shows sometimes they’re my allies, sometimes they’re my enemies. Or maybe I should say rivals rather than enemies. Ah, but the fans on the internet are my enemy. Without them I think I would’ve ran outta gas by now though. Because they stir up every emotion possible from me. This has been a constant for the past 20 years too (laughs). ‘Cause like, it never changes. Like, I wanna fling my TV out from my hotel even now (laughs).

2YOU：安心しました（笑）。出会った頃のギイさんは「誰も信じない」みたいな目つきをしていたんですよ。でもこの10年くらいはライブで感謝を述べるようになったり、あんなに嫌いと言っていた名古屋のことを好きって言ったり、そうなるとビレッジマンズストアはどうなってしまうのかなって心配も少しあって。 2YOU: That’s a relief (laughs). When we first met your eyes had the look of a man that didn’t trust anyone. Yet since about 10 years ago you’ve come to be able to express your appreciation during shows, you’ve come to love the city of Nagoya which you had vehemently hated so- though I was a bit worried for a moment about what would happen to the band after this.

水野ギイ：うん。 Mizuno Gui: Yeah.

2YOU：だけど違ったんです。人やこの街のことを好きだという感情が芽生えたことで水野ギイはより強くなった気がするんです。 2YOU: But I was a fool to worry. Mizuno Gui grew even stronger by coming to find love for this city and its people.

We made it such that the music will always sound as if it’s loud enough to blow off the roof, even when it’s at a low volume enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. I can’t wait for you to hear it. The one thing is, that because I’ve been busy I’ve been unable to go home at all recently. It’s totally fine though. Doing music is fun after all, just never forget that your cute little fun time comes at the expense of me having to go outside.

ということで今回も帰宅のお供にどうぞ。 Now that’s out of the way, my hope is that you may enjoy this article paired with a nice journey home. 早速だが、シャツってなんで着てる間は何も感じないのに脱いでしばらく経ったやつを嗅ぐと臭いのだろう。ライブを終え衣装を脱ぎ捨て、元々着ていた服を再度着ようとすると毎回「おれこんな感じでしたっけ？」と絶望する。脱いで時間が経って臭くなったのか、それとも臭かったけど気付いていなかったのか。それが一番の問題であるが、きっと後者なのだろう。自分の悪いところは指摘される前に決めつけ、自虐にする。なんてわきまえた男なんだ水野ギイ。 Sorry to get right to business but, why is it that you don’t notice anything while you’re wearing a shirt, but after you take it off and step away for a while, only then does it reek. Whenever I kick my clothes off after a show and go to put the garments I was originally wearing back on, I’m always met with a harsh, depressing reality. “Did I really smell like this?” Did it get smelly after I took it off and time passed, or was it always smelly while I just never noticed? That’s the main issue, and the answer is probably most likely the latter. Before anyone points out my bad parts I’m gonna flaunt themself, and be self-deprecating about it too. Damn, wow, Mizuno Gui is such a discreet, discerning guy.

そしてこの問題はシャツに限った話ではない、部屋だってそうだ。無臭だった（と思っていた）おれの部屋なのに、仕事で数日空けて帰宅すると臭い。留守中に知らないおじさんいました？と本気で疑う。 This issue isn’t limited to only my shirts either. My room is the same ordeal. My room doesn’t smell like anything (or so I thought), until I go on business trips for a few days and come back, only then does it smell. It makes me seriously wonder if some random old man came in while I was gone.

さて、ここからがこの話の本題だ。よく「人間は誰しも自分のにおいに対しては鈍感になる」と聞くが、これは実は逆なのではないか。自分のにおいは気付かない、即ち「においがしないところまでは自分」なのではないだろうか。 犬は散歩中にマーキングをする。同じようにおれたちは知らず知らずのうちに自分自身の境界を五感のうちの1つで決めているのでは。 だとしたら脱ぎ捨てられたシャツはものの30分やそこらで自分ではなくなるし、3日も家を空けたらもうそこは本能的に、自分の場所でないことになる。 Now onto the main matter of business. People say that we humans grow numb to our own scent, but is the truth actually the contrary? We don’t notice our own scent, so in other words that means that anything and everything that doesn’t smell to us is now a part of us. Dogs mark their territory when they go on walks. In that same vein maybe we too are staking our claim to things via one of our five senses without even knowing it. So after we take off a shirt for a 30 minute period or whatever, that shirt is no longer a part of us anymore. And if we aren’t home for 3 whole days, our home is instinctually no longer our place.

おれはまた外出が怖くなってしまった……。 更に言えば、女の子等に「ワァ、ギイさんのにおいだぁ」と言われた時、おれはエッチな気持ちになっていたが、あれは知らんうちにATフィールドを張られていたのではないか。ナワバリバトルを仕掛けられていたのではないのか。本当に、エッチな気持ちを返してほしい。 おれはまた女の子が怖くなってしまった……。 Now I’m even more afraid of going outside….. Moreover, sometimes girls and people will come up to me and say “Wah, it’s Gii-san’s scent~”, and at first this gave me a lewd sensation but, it soon made me realize that I must be out here putting up an AT field subconsciously. So these girls have been unconsciously challenging me to a turf war all this time. Aww man, give me my lewd sensation back. Now I’m even more afraid of women….

知ってしまった今、もう布団にくるまって死を待っていた方がいいのかもしれない。 Now that I’ve had this revelation, I feel like maybe I’m better off just curling up in my bed and awaiting death’s sweet embrace. しかしそういえばあったな、夢中になっている時、幸せな場所、何も感じない瞬間が。音楽してる時なんかがそれだ。ライブとかもそうだ、汗くさいとか、全然わかんないもん。 たしかに自分の望んだ空間で、本当の自分で、自分のありたい自分だ。 そういう時間を、場所を、相手を、怖がらずにたくさん探していくべきなのかもしれないね。 メンバーもにおいとかあんまりわかんねえから、多分もはや自分なんだ。 女の子は、きっとずっと自分と違うにおいだけど、いいにおいだからいいや。 But wait, my life hasn’t been all that bad, I’ve gotten in the zone, I’ve been to happy places, and I’ve numbed my senses. When I’m doing music everything’s kinda just like that. Same for concerts, how am I supposed to know whether I reek of sweat or not. And there’s really no other place I’d rather be, show’s are where I can be myself, and exactly who I want to be. So maybe I should be brave and try to find more places like concerts, more people like that, more moments like that. Also I never ever really notice my bandmates odor either, so they’re most likely a part of me as well. Women are… well, they’ll probably forever and always smell differently from me, but hey at least they smell good. 自分のことがわからなくなったら、一度立ち止まって何も感じないのを思い出したらいい。自分を客観視できなくなったら、しばらく家を留守にしてから自分の抜け殻を嗅いだらいい。 枕が一瞬死んだ祖父の匂いがしてマジで焦った。 If you ever lose sight of yourself, try taking a break from whatever you’re trying to do and check out what numbs your senses. If you struggle to view yourself objectively, try leaving your house for a while then come back to get a good whiff of your empty husk. 今日も帰ってますか？早く帰ってください。ビレッジマンズストアの水野ギイだ。 Did you manage to make it home in one piece today? You better be, if not you better mosey on home already. It’s me, Village Man’s Store’s Mizuno Gui.

おかげさまで第2回、前回「文字数制限とか聞いてないんですけど大丈夫ですか」と書いたが案の定本誌でしっかり削らされ、レーベルの担当の方に謎に謝られた。おれは謝り専なので謝られたくないんだよ。見ている君は1400文字を越えそうだったら早めに言ってほしい、そろそろ口を閉じろよと。 I’ve been lucky enough to be allowed a 2nd installment of this here column. Even after last time I had up and written something along the lines of “Nobody told me if there was any word limit or anything but is what I wrote okay?”, of which to nobody’s surprise was almost entirely trimmed down in the final cut. Plus, weirdly enough, someone from my label came and apologized to me for it. I’m supposed to be the guy who’s always apologizing, I don’t want people to do the apologizing to me. So anyway if you’re seeing this and you notice me rambling so much that I get on the verge of exceeding 1400 letters then tell me ASAP, tell me to shut my mouth.

さて、本題だ。 Alright, now let’s get down to business.

家に帰りたい気持ちを手紙にして飛ばすこのコラムだが、そもそもなぜ人は帰らないのか。わざわざ連れ立って飲みに行くのか。終電を逃すのか。勝利（帰宅）の為にまずは敵を知らねばならないのではないか。 This column is supposed to really just be me turning my eagerness to go home into a letter and tossing it to the winds, but today I’m here to presumptuously raise the core question as to why do people not just go home in the first place. Why do they go out of their way to get a gang together and go out drinking? Why do they miss the last train? In order to achieve victory (go home), one must first understand their enemy.

普段から空気を愛読し、人の機嫌を窺う欄全てにしおりを挟む男ことおれは中立の立場を装っている故に答えを知っている。 I, a man who’s typically an avid reader of the room and who sticks bookmarks on every last thing I notice that affects people’s moods, I maintain a neutral position, thus do I know the answer to that fundamental question.

「時間を使い合うことで友情や絆を確かめたい」 “By sharing time together with people they strive to strengthen their bonds and friendships.”

至ってシンプル。 It’s entirely as simple as that.

ではなぜ何度も何度もそれをするのか、それもシンプル、思ったより効果がないからだ。 However, why do they insist on doing that same thing over and over. The answer to that is simple as well. It’s because their method wasn’t as effective as they had hoped it would be.

話は変わるが、君は「クロスションベン」を知っているだろうか。 I’m gonna change the subject a bit here but, are you aware of “Criss-cross pissing”. 1つの小便器に男子2人が並びお互いの放物線を交差させたり、時にぶつけ合ったりする秘密の遊びである。 It’s a secret game that two boys play together by sharing one urinal and both aiming their parabola such that they intercross, and sometimes collide with each other.

当方腐ってもバンドマン、仲間や同士と苦しさや喜びを分かち合い、最高の共有を何度も経験してきたはずだが、今までの人生で他人と心の距離が1番縮まった瞬間を思い浮かべてみたら、結局クロスションベンだった。 No matter how rotten I am I’m still a bandman, I share both pains and joys with my colleagues and allies, I’ve shared incredible life changing moments countless times with them, and yet when I think back on when in life I felt the most intimately connected in spirit with someone, it’s gotta be when I was crisscross pissing.

もしかしたらこれを読んでいる全員が同じようなものなんじゃないだろうか。放課後友達の家でやったスマブラ、クラス中をたらい回しにされたアダルトビデオを受け取った瞬間、修学旅行で一緒に買ったメリケンサック。心を通わせることがなぜあんなに簡単だったのか。そしてなぜ今は何時間ねばっても、共に朝日を見てもそれらを越えられないのか。 Maybe everyone reading this actually feels the same way as me. Whether it was playing Smash Bros. together after school at someone’s house, or when it was my turn to receive the porno that was being passed around the class, or when we bought brass knuckles together on a school trip. Why is it that what makes me feel truly connected with others can be something so simple. Why is it that no matter how much time I offer these days, even enough to see the sun rise together with people, nothing can ever quite beat that.

記憶はあるし何話したかも3割くらい覚えてる。みんな最高大好きだ、でも次の日にはきっとおれはあいつのことを考えてあげられない。 I have the memory of it happening and I remember about 30% of what we talked about. Everyone’s awesome and I love them, but by the next day there’s no way that I’m gonna still be thinking of them.

それぞれのクロスションベンが記憶の底にへばりつき、それを越えられない歯痒さと少しの希望が「今夜こそは」と終電を逃し、お互いのチン毛を燃やすのかもしれない。 Yet the memory of every time I’ve crisscross pissed with someone is stuck like glue to the pits of my cognizance. Yet this harrowing feeling that my past memories can never be topped mixed along with a flicker of hope that “maybe tonight’s the night” is what convinces me to continue to miss the last train, and to burn each other’s dick hairs.

ちなみに同じことをすればいいのかもと思い立ち友人とクロスションベンを試みたこともあるが、当時にはなかった謎の跳ね防止気遣いと、ちょっとだけ後ろめたエッチな空気に満たされて終わった。あとおじさんは放物線が歪だった。 I have indeed tried to recreate the magic and crisscross piss with friends, but the weird way everyone was overly considerate about not splashing that nobody did before with me, plus the slight lewd air filling the room, had brought it to an end. Also the parabolas of old men are all wonky.

おれはもう徹夜明けの繋がりを永遠にすることを諦めてしまったし、あの頃のように遠慮のない凶器のような親近感を他人に向けることはできない。家に帰りたいし君を早く家に帰したい。 At this point I’ve eternally given up on connecting via spending sleepless nights with people, I can no longer direct an unfettered lethal weapon-like intimacy at people. I just want to go home and I want to get you home too.

そしてだからこそ今でも人の内面に触れる機会である音楽が好きで、たまに距離感の壁をぶっ壊せるライブが大好きだ。 That’s exactly why I like how music gives me the ability to interact with people’s inner side, and why I love concerts which give me the ability to break down the wall between us sometimes.

無くした分だけできるようになって、忘れた分だけ解るようになる。 Gaining just as much as I lose, understanding just as much as I’m forgetting.

無いものねだりをしているだけで、総量はきっと変わらないのだと思う。 Or maybe that’s just a pipe dream, all in all I don’t think there’s much of an overall difference.

少しだけ湿度を変えた友情だか愛情だかを好きなやつとクロスさせていけたらいい。そう、0時を回る前まで。 You should cross with someone you like if your friendship or romance or whatever needs a little spicing up. Before your clock hits 0.

隔月でご機嫌を伺うコラムのお時間です。 It’s been two months, it’s time for me to check up on how you’re doing, in column form.

宣伝になりますがおれのバンド、ビレッジマンズストアがほぼ全曲再録したベストアルバム「遊撃」をリリースしました。毎日レコーディングで帰れないくらい大変でしたがおかげさまで大満足う作品になりました。このコラムでビレッジマンズストアの存在を知る方はなかなか稀有だと思いますが、初めて聴く方もいきなり最高に楽しめる内容になってます。MVも公開されています、総カット80〜90。全て冒頭から終わりまで通しの演奏シーン。肋骨を折っていたので、ゲストの方がふざけて飛びかかってきたりした時は死を覚悟しました。 Sorry for the shameless promo, but my band, Village Man’s Store, have recently released a hits album that’s practically just every song we’ve ever made, called “Yugeki”. We were so busy recording for days on end that it was hard for me to go home for a while, but thanks to all that hard work we put in, the album turned out to be a piece I’m really proud of. I’m sure there’s barely anyone out there who is just learning of VMS from this column but, for you first time listeners out there I made sure that the album is sure to be a whale of a time off the get-go. We’ve put out a music video as well, of which took about 80-90 shots, all which were a nonstop jam session from start to end. I had a fractured rib at the time of recording as well, so whenever one of our guests started horsing around and jumping at me, I was prepared to embrace death.

さてコラム本題へ。 Alright then on to the nuts and bolts of the column.

とてもありがたいことにこのコラム非常に評判が良く、様々な方からお声をかけていただくきっかけになった。しかし同時に「水野さん、家から出ていないんですか？」と聞かれることがすごく増え、終いには「体調には気をつけてください、陽の光も大切です」と知らない方に心配される始末（ありがとう） Much to my delight this column is taking off more than it should, and has spurred a variety of people to come up and talk to me. By the same token more and more people are asking me whether or not I go outside or not, ultimately leading to people I’ve never met before telling me “Take care of your health, sunlight is essential,” (thank you though).

ここではっきり言っておく、おれはまあまあ外に出ている！！！なんならメンバーの中でも1、2位を争うくらいは出てる！！！！勘違いするなよ！！！ So lemme put this straight, right here right now… I actually go outside quite often!!! Compared to my other bandmates I might just be the number one or number two contender for who goes outside the most!!!! So don’t get it twisted!!!

様々な用事や見たいライブ等、バンドマンとして顔を出さなければいけないことも多くそのために動くこともあるのだが、それ以外でもフラフラと街を徘徊したり、意味もなく公園を散歩したり、ショッピングモールで子犬を眺める等をしている。 I got chores to do, concerts to see, and a lotta places to drop in at as the face of the band, but besides that I also enjoy wandering aimlessly around town, strolling purposelessly around the park, or gazing at puppies in shopping malls.

ではなぜ帰るの大好き家だいちゅきなおれが外に出るのか、理由は簡単、ずばり「帰るために外に出ている」これに尽きる。 You may ask yourself why do I, the lover of going home and champion of saying “I wuv my house”, bother going outside? The reason is simply that “I go outside just so I can go home”. Nothing more.

よく考えてくれ、一回外に出たら、一回家に帰れる。二回出たら二回帰れる。すごい！家を出れば出るほど、家に帰れる！！！！！勝手に増える！！マジックかな！！？！？ Think about it, for every time you step out the door, you also get to come back and step in the door. It’s incredible! The more you touch grass, the more you get to go home!!!!! It’s just exponential, and all on its own too!! What is this, magic!!?!!

この人何言ってるんだろう、と思われるかもしれない。破綻してもうこのコラムは終わるのかもしれない。しかしやめない、おれは帰宅に憧れている、おれは帰宅をリスペクトしている。 おれは家でダラダラすることが好きだ。 I know you may be out there thinking “What the hell is this guy yapping on about?”. This might be a huge blunder on my part and this column might be done for. Yet nevertheless I commend the act of going home, I honor the act of going home. For I love lazing around at home with all my heart.

でも家でダラダラすることに特別な幸せを感じられないような奴にはなりたくないのだ。 Yet I don’t want to just become numb to the special happiness that lazing around at home brings.

好きなものよ特別であれ。 The things you love gotta stay special.

音楽という娯楽の世界に身を置く中でいつでも気をつけていることだ。 As someone head deep in the entertainment world of music, that’s something I’m constantly keeping myself aware of.

おれはおっぱいが本当に好きだが、好きな人が24時間裸でいたらすごく悲しい。ご飯が大好きだ、でも食べるならばごはんが愛おしくなるまでお腹を空かせたい。 I really love boobs, but if I was naked with the person I love 24/7 then it would be so sad. I love rice, but if I’m gonna eat then I wanna starve myself until the rice becomes something precious.

音楽はただのBGMにしない、血が沸くことを毎度思い出して、自分の指で選びたい。 I don’t want songs to just be like background music to me, I wanna think back on the ways each piece has riled me up whenever I pick a song with my own fingertip.

ちょっと面倒な目に遭って、家に帰ってスマホをぶん投げたい。 I want to be able to fling my phone when I get home after dealing with a bit of trouble.

好きなものを使い捨てる必要はない。いつでも欲しがって、しっかりと手に入れて、幸せになって、また手に入れるためにしまっておくのだ。 You don’t gotta treat the things you love as something to just use until you’re satisfied then throw them away. They can be something you yearn for constantly until at long last get ahold of ‘em, where you let them bring you happiness, until you then shut them away just so you can get ahold of them all over again.

勿論嫌いなものも山ほどある。あいつらいつでも邪魔してくるけど、引き立て役だと思えばなんてことはない。好きなものを輝かせるために、嫌いなものを存分に利用してやろう。 Of course I’ve got a mountain load of things I hate to deal with, of which seem to constantly be getting up in my business. But as long as I think of them as just foils which exist to make everything else look better, then they don’t get under my skin. They’re here to make the things I love sparkle and shine, right, so I’m eager to make the most of’em.

そんなわけで今日は家電屋へ行った。涼しいからだ。帰る最中にバイクからスマホを落としてしまった。探す機能で見たらずっと動いていたのでひたすらマップに従って追い続け、最終的に交番に届いた。カップルが届けてくれたらしい。拝啓お母さん、今日おれはカップルのデートを4時間追いかけ回したよ。 Anyway, today I went down to the appliance store. ‘Cause they have the A/C on and it’s cool in there. Then I dropped my phone while driving my motorcycle home. When I checked the Find My app my phone was still active, so I followed the map and chased it all over until at long last I arrived at the police station. A couple had come and dropped it off. Dear mother, I just spent the last 4 hours stalking a couple on their date.

Search and Destroy/A Raid etc.)”. Almost every song on the album has been lovingly played and re-recorded by the modern 5 man crew. Both Disc 1 and Disc 2 each boast their own unique theme, Disc 1 “遊 (Yuu: TL. search/play/venture)“ sings about having a connection with something, while Disc 2 “撃 (Geki: TL. destroy/attack/shoot) is all on the offense.

　さて、今日のうたではそんな“ビレッジマンズストア”の水野ギイによる歌詞エッセイを3週連続でお届け。第1弾は収録曲「PINK」にまつわるお話です。かつて、いつも何かに対する怒りを燃やしていた自身。形容するなら“真っ赤”だった在り方が、少しずつ変わっていった理由は…。ぜひ歌詞と併せて、エッセイをお楽しみください。 So, for the next 3 weeks we will be pleased to have Mizuno Gui of Village Man’s Store write us weekly essays about the lyrics. First and foremost he will be delving into the song “PINK”. Long ago, he would constantly be reeling in anger over anything and everything. For some reason, his state of being, which could only have been dubbed as something of “a bright, deep red”, slowly but surely came to welcome change… Please pair this essay along with the song, and enjoy.

10年前、おれは怒っていた。何に対してかは覚えていない。とにかく毎日火をくべ、怒りを燃やしていた。 10 years ago, I was furious. I don’t remember exactly what I was angry at, but I was angry alright. Everyday I would stoke the flames and blow a fuse.

不条理、嫉妬、退屈、好きじゃない音楽がどんどん売れていくこと、テレビで見た政治のこと、勢いでバイトをやめてしまった自分のこと、友達や女の子を大切にできないのをそんな自分の生活のせいにしたこと。 Irrationality, jealousy, boredom, the fact that all the popular music was crap I didn’t like, all the politics I saw on TV, the fact that I quit my part time job just on a whim and dropped it like a hot potato, and then blamed it on the way I couldn’t appreciate my friends nor girls and just that whole lifestyle of mine.

おおよそこんな風なものだった。探せばきっとあと150項目以上はあるが、列挙するに値しないものだらけだろう。 自分を形容するとまさしく猩猩緋色。「真っ赤」であった（ステージ衣装の話ではなく）。 That’s pretty much the gist of it. I’m sure there’s like 150 other things I could add but I think it’s all stuff not even worth enumerating. If I were to describe myself in one word it would be the color shojohi, the color scarlet. I truly was “bright red” (not in regards to my stage outfit).

とはいえ、その感情を矯正したいかと言われればそうではなく、寧ろ無理矢理自分を特別だと思い込むために自ら選び、そうあろうとした。 With that said, if you were to ask me whether I wanted to correct or control those emotions I would’ve said no, I probably would’ve instead chosen to fall into the fire myself, as a means to forcefully, violently believe myself as someone special.

「真っ赤」であることはバンドマンとして不可欠な要素である、と考えていた。 I was under the impression that being of “a bright red” was an essential asset to any rocker.

だって雑誌で見るロックスターは、いつもなにかに怒っているんだもん。おれもそうしなきゃいけないんだ。 Well ‘cause all the rockstars in the magazines I read were always angry at something. So I had to be like that too.

『刃の上を君と行く』発売から1年以上経ち、いよいよ次の製作を終わらせなければならない。 It was now more than one year after the release of “Yaiba no Ue wo Kimi to Yuku”, I had to finish our next piece, and fast.

この尖らせたエネルギーを発散させる時だ。 It was time for me to vent all this edgy energy of mine.

レーベルの人、曲急かしてきやがってちくしょう。でも怖そうだったけど力になってくれたな。ちくしょう。そういえばCD作るまでに色んな人と話したな。幼馴染含むメンバーはたまにむかつくけど結構いいやつらだ。バイトも辞めちゃったけど、なんだか気持ちよく送り出してくれた。女の子はいつもニコニコして、がんばれ大丈夫って言ってくれた。駄目な日は呆れながらメシとか作ってくれた。ちくしょう。 Our label was rushing us to finish songs damn it. Though they were scary they did help us out though. Damn it. Oh yeah I did consult a bunch of people about the album. My bandmates and childhood buds do piss me off sometimes but at the end of the day they’re all good guys. I may have quit my part time job, but everyone wished me luck and bid me farewell so kindly. The girl was still always smiley, and was always telling me everything’s okay and cheering me on. On my bad days she would be annoyed yet still make food and stuff for me. Damn it.

おかしいな、おれは誰よりも「真っ赤」になりたかったけど、そんな姿になってもこの人たちは横を歩いてくれるのだろうか。 Wait, something's not right here, I wanted to be like “a deep red” more than anyone, but these people were still walking side by side with me despite what I had become.

おれは本当に「その格好良い」になりたいのだろうか。いやー、困った。全然なりたくないかもな…。 Do I really want to be the badass I had admired so? Shit, I’m lost. Maybe I don’t want to be cool in that way at all….

「真っ赤」じゃなきゃ駄目ならばきっともうおれには向いていない、この人たちに優しくしたい。 If “bright red” is what I gotta be then maybe I’m not cut out for this. I just want to be nice to these people.

新しい憧れができてしまった。 Now I admire something new, damn it.

これからおれ達はどうなる。きっと望んで薄まっていく。赤はピンクに、生々しくて自然で生活の色。混ぜようによっちゃ、きっと少しだけ格好悪い。ひょっとしたら学生街の下世話なネオン管みたいになっちまうかもな。 What’s going to happen to us now. We’re probably going to soften and fade, and willingly too. Red will turn to pink; the raw, natural color of life. Depending on how you render it it’s probably a bit lame of a color. Maybe even a bit like the earthy old neon pink pipes in a college town.

まだ分からないけれど、その出来上がった色を何年もかけて少しずつ愛していきたいと思った。 Back then I had no clue what was to come, but I had decided that I wanted to learn to love the color I would soon become, no matter how many years it would take.
