Shutdown of Service

On March 7, 2019, we are shutting down the legacy Google+ APIs.
As previously noted, the pug.io service is no longer maintained. Given that pug.io uses Google+ for authentication, the shutdown of Google+ services results in the shutdown of pug.io.

pug.io uses data from Google for the sole purpose to create a user account.
Note Possible Shutdown of Service
pug.io has been running unattended for years now, but it could shut down at any moment. The project came together in about two weeks in 2013, with discussion in earlier posts here on how the project might evolve if it were to take on more features.
Given that the application is not maintained, note that it could shut down without notice. Thanks for being part of our incredible journey.
Here's my current list of features that would make pug.io useful:
Build a network of players based on past PUGs.
Get notifications when your network is looking for PUGs.
Find a time. Poll with multiple times instead of just one.
Game availability. Set the times you want to play in the week.
(1) and (2), I have mentioned before. (3) makes me think of doodle.com. (4) was one that I thought might be worth building, then noticed that doodle.com added it.

You can provide any name you like without logging in. It collects and displays the best times, and in my experience is very easy to use. (I've been using doodle since 2007.)

A pug.io variant would have players set preferred gaming times and optimize using that data.
I designed pug.io to be a tool to invite in-game friends to meet up with you. Post the link while you are afk, and when you return, expect people to join you based on replies. pug.io does not link your in-game name back to your actual name, since it exists to connect people on the internet who you would not send e.g. a facebook invite, given you are not going to be facebook friends with most of these people.
I sent pug.io around to a few friends. Based on feedback and usage, I can say:
The instant signup works as intended. pug.io has very low friction for usage once someone visits the page.
My friends are not interested in meeting people in game (League of Legends). Not really, anyway.
Otherwise, people agree that the idea is neat.
Since my alpha users are not really using it, the project has a dim future. I have a lot of ideas on how to make it a really great tool. Given the data model, pug.io can learn your social network of in-game friends and friends of friends based on who replies to posted games. Then it could show you a list of upcoming game proposals based on that network, and even notify you using email, SMS, or some other push. Further features would enable you to meet others in pug.io itself, especially when you realize that someone in your League network plays another game you really like.
It's possible that those features would get people using it more often, but since there's very little usage with the core feature, I am not sure that they would. Perhaps my alpha users are not representative of who wants this feature. (I think that they are.) Perhaps I need to market it and get the word out. (I don't think that would solve anything.)
pug.io will stay online for a while. My monthly expenses to keep it running are negligible for now. We will see if anyone sends feedback that would clarify the direction of the project. pug.io is currently hard-coded to League of Legends, but supporting every game with a type-ahead list of games is less than a day's work.

I tightened up the pug proposal and reply forms to be more predictive (and expected) on in-game names. I turned off free-text in-game name on repeated replies to prevent someone from having conversations with self under different names. I touched up the text in the pug activity reply.
I still want free-text in-game names to support privacy and flexibility. It's non-trivial. pug.io separates in-game names from real names, and that's an important feature.
Colin suggested open graph meta tags, to support clean facebook preview. Deployed.

2 of my friends gave a first review. Looks good so far.
Scott suggested a calendar feed: Google Calendar, iPhone, ... Here's my interpretation. We were discussing how to be effective in scheduling your own game time (not checking in all the time to see if people are on), so that games you care about end up in "one place" for your on scheduling. Might sound odd, but idling well is not something that is granted. Sometimes you want to schedule your leisure.
That makes exactly 2 weeks of balanced nights/weekends from clear concept to share-able alpha.

I sorted out how Google account disconnect should work. Next up: dismissable flashed messages, CSRF review, buildout of the most basic version of user-facing forms, ajax loading indicator, front-page drawing, favicon, home screen icon, and then inline editing and predictive entry of games to play. Then it's an alpha to send to friends.
Spending enough time with twitter's bootstrap to get pug.io's markup in a state which is passable: users will be okay with it; I won't hate if I take on an actual visual design phase. Theme is swappable for the most part.
