WHAT The Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize is the most important visual arts prize awarded annually by Portland State University’s School of Art + Design.  It is meant to recognize excellence in visual art created by all students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees from the School of A+D.

ELIGIBILITY Students must be majoring in programs in the PSU School of Art + Design (Art Practice, Graphic Design and Art History) and enrolled in half-time or greater status during Spring 2016 (prior winners of this award are not eligible). Winners will be announced in June 2016 and must be willing and able to display and help install their work at the exhibit held in their honor during Fall term 2016. Please note that this applies to all A+D majors creating visual work.

JUDGING A jury consisting of School of Art + Design faculty and professionals from the visual arts community will judge the submissions and identify the winners. Three awards will be made, though the jury can, at its discretion, decide not to make awards should they determine that none of the entries merit the recognition.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Entries are due on or before Monday May 2, 2016 All submissions will be via pdx.slideroom.com; $10 fee to Slideroom required.

Slideroom submissions include electronic uploads of the following:
 a) A 100 word artist statement

b) A brief video artist’s statement (2 minutes maximum) that discusses the media and concept you are exploring. This could include process, purpose, intention and your own academic and professional goals.

c) Upload up to 7 images. An “image” presents a single work. Up to one of the 7 images can be video or audio clips of no more than 90 seconds.  Each clip must be a single work, or taken from a single work. Multiple works presented within an image will cause that image to be disqualified. Exceptions: if one of the presented works is a cohesive series, then one installation image and one detail image is permitted. If one of the presented works is a designed campaign or packaging series or design system, then an image of no more than 4 pieces and one detail image may be used to represent the system. In no cases will more than a total of 7 images, as defined above, be considered by the jury. Failure to adhere to the requirements listed above will cause the application to be dismissed.

d) By applying, applicants agree to participate in the award exhibition the following fall, should they be awarded a prize.

Navarrete x Kajiyama creates interdisciplinary performance works using movement, theater, art installation, multimedia, and site-specific environments. Our work has been influenced by ritual, cultural studies, and the political and environmental concerns of the world in which we live. In the last eight years, the themes in our work have shifted to address our deepening concern with social and environmental issues. Recent themes include: racial profiling and state brutality, genetic modification of native crops, the commodification of water, cultural colonization, and the human response to overwhelming disaster.

Since 2001, Navarrete x Kajiyama has created work involving members of the Latino transgender community, the local Mexican-American and Japanese-American communities, and San Francisco’s community of Argentine Tango dancers. From 2005-2008, we were artists-in-residency at ODC Theater. In 2006, Navarrete x Kajiyama was named one of the 25 to Watch by Dance Magazine. In 2007, we collaborated with visual artists from Eastside Arts Alliance, an organization of artists and community organizers of color in East Oakland to create the performance environment for The Revenge of Huitlacoche. That same year, Navarrete x Kajiyama was invited to present their work at the Hemispheric Institute on Performance and Politics' Encuentro in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2008 and 2014, we were chosen to be the San Francisco representative for SCUBA Touring Network performances in Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and Seattle. In 2010-11 we were Irvine Fellows at the Lucas Artist Residency Program at Montalvo Arts Center.

Their work has been presented by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, ODC Theater, the Queer Arts Festival, Movement Research at Judson Church (NYC), the Yerba Buena Choreographers Festival, California State University East Bay, the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center Performance Series, the Oakland Museum of California, and the San Francisco Asian Art Museum.

Photo by Steven Sanchez José Navarrete is a native of México City where he was first exposed to theater and dance, choreographing and performing in parks, hospitals, and children's parties as a clown and dancer. He studied dance at the National Institute of Fine Arts in México, and has a B.A. in Anthropology from UC Berkeley and M.F.A in Dance from Mills College. He has studied dance with Sara Shelton Mann, Taiko with Hiroyuki Nakagawa and Argentine Tango with Nora Dinzelbacher. In 2004, José was the recipient of a Bessie Schönberg residency at The Yard, and a Djerassi residency. José is the recipient of a CHIME Mentorship with Jess Curtis, and a CHIME Across Borders fellowship with Ralph Lemon. Navarrete has taught dance and performance to youth and adults in Mexico, and in the San Francisco Bay Area at Berkeley High School, Marin Academy, Cal State East Bay, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. He currently teaches youth in Eastside Arts Alliance’s Guerilla Performing Group.

8 credits ART 399/499 Printmaking & Mixed Media Led by A+D adjunct faculty Mandee Schroer

This course will focus on drawing, painting, printmaking, and journalling. Students will consider how place and location influence ideas and also how it translates into an artistic production in the studio. Students will be asked to explore and supply their own answers based on the physical, cultural, and historical setting of Guanajuato.

In addition to field trips to local galleries and museums, participants will spend approximately nine days in the printmaking studio at Piramidal Grafica, a private art center owned and operated by Hugo Anaya, Jim Hibbard and Jenny Hibbard. Located within a two century old stone wall with patios and gardens, the facility houses three large printmaking presses in a 1200 square foot studio with an abundance of natural lighting.

Prerequisites None - although some printmaking, drawing, painting or other art experience would be helpful. Must have permission of the instructor.

Paintings by Rosemarie Beck make up the inaugural display at Portland State University's Lincoln Hall exhibit space, February 18th through May 3rd, 2015. The exhibit is co-curated by PSU faculty Sue Taylor (art history) and Patricia Schechter (history). Beck's paintings at PSU will be displayed concurrently with a selection of her drawings at Helzer Art Gallery at Portland Community College, Rock Creek, February 9th-March 13th and her embroideries at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, January 14th-March 22nd.

Collected by museums such as the Whitney, Corcoran and Hirshhorn, Rosemarie Beck (1923-2003) was an American modernist painter who studied with Philip Guston and Robert Motherwell in New York City. Rosemarie Beck Symposium | March 5 A symposium featuring a scholarly panel, dramatic readings, and music will be held on March 5th at PSU in Lincoln Hall's Studio Theater. In the evening, Professor of Art History Samantha Baskind of Cleveland State University will deliver the Sara Glasgow Cogan Memorial Lecture in Judaic Studies as the symposium's keynote.

This course will collaboratively research Portland’s medieval collections and create learning tools to help make our city's archival materials more accessible. Students will work on projects such as object research, grant writing, teacher guides, web-based learning tool development, multimedia projects, etc. This would be a good fit for students interested in art history, medieval history and the history of Portland.

The Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize was created in 2013 with a gift from the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation to help raise awareness of the quality of art education at Portland State University. Fifty-five students competed for this year’s prizes. Winners were selected by a jury that included PSU faculty members Pat Boas, Erik Geschke, and Lis Charman, and community representatives Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson (Portland Art Museum); Sarah Meigs, (founder of the Lumber Room); Duane King (Huge/KingCoyle); and Theo Downes-Le Guin (Upfor Gallery).

At our April 17 Open House we asked you to give us your feedback by completing the prompt "In my art building, I want..." The Image above is a summary of results!

With the help of A+D Projects, an interactive installation was created for the event to engage viewers, invite ideas and spark a conversation. The installation covered the windows of Interim Director Ethan Seltzer's office with Post-its notes arranged in the form of buildings. Participants were asked to write on the notes their ideas for what ought to be on the "must have" list for a new art building. The results of the evening have been added to the School of Art+Design's strategic planning efforts for a new art building.

The School of Art+Design Art Practices BFA Program 2013-14 presents Loose Associations, the thesis exhibition of its thirteen graduating BFA students. Their diverse practices incorporate painting, sculpture, drawing, video, installation, photography, print and digital media, and represents the full breath of the program. Loose Associations is exhibited across the Portland State University campus art galleries and is open to the public from May 27 to June 10 (Littman and White Gallery continue until June 28).

The A+D BFA Program at PSU is designed to provide a group of senior Art Practices students with one year of immersive study before graduation. The program is designed to complement the Art Practices BA/BS tracks and to further develop, across disciplines, an open dialog about contemporary art, its practices, and its cultural implications. Upon admission to the program, students commit to an intensive one-year studio-based experience during which they conduct research, expand their practice, and construct a cohesive body of work. These exhibitions document their experience and highlight some of its varied manifestations.

We are pleased to offer congratulations to two of our recent graduates. Katherine Ball and Sharita Towne are the recipients of fellowships from the 2014-2015 Fulbright US Student Program. The program offers fellowships for US graduating seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to research, study, or teach English abroad for one academic year.

Katherine Ball has been awarded a fellowship in Denmark for her proposal "Environmental Sustainability Initiatives of Denmark: A Research-Based Art Installation." Katherine has spent the last few years working on projects around the world, exploring alternatives to the dominant discourse. Some of these projects include creating indoor grey water systems, bicycling across the US to interview Americans working on small-scale solutions to the climate crisis, coordinating a national day of action to halt business at banks and corporations unduly influencing state laws, and living in an off-grid floating island building mushroom filters to clean a polluted lake. She calls herself "an amateur" in the best sense of the word, and says she strives to give more energy to our dreams than our fears.

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Katherine Ball earned a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin in 2002. In 2011 she participated in an exchange program at the School of Walls & Space, Royal Danish Academy of Arts, Copenhagen. She earned her MFA in Art and Social Practice from the School of Art + Design in 2012.

Sharita Towne received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Brazil. In addition to teaching English, she will lead a group of Brazilian youth in the production of an audiovisual art-based project on cultural identity. As an artist, Sharita is interested in unpacking life's burdens, understanding how they mold our present selves, and in trying to give rise to a collective catharsis. To this end she has undertaken work at former concentration camps and memorials in Germany, in Saharawi Refugee camps in Algeria, in favelas and cultural centers in Brazil, with additional work in Chile, Spain, Palestine, and within her own family.

Sharita Towne grew up between Oregon, Washington, and Northern California, and graduated from UC Berkeley in 2008 with a BA in Art Practice and Interdisciplinary Studies. She is a MFA Candidate in Contemporary Art Practice from the School of Art + Design for 2014.
