[In a far away time, Noah might have been a bit of a snot nosed kid. He was still a good kid, classic teacherās pet and everything, but his parents spoiled him. And he was used to getting what he wanted. But that was before he told his parents. Before he told them that he had no plans to be a Doctor or Lawyer like them.Ā
And to his parents, those were the only two professions worth mentioning. Noah had tried to reason with them, making them see that he was still the same smart kid that they had raised. He just had different passions and motivations then them. This apparently wasnāt the answer they were looking for.Ā
Noahās dad didnāt want for his son to turn out aĀ faggot, which he was sure Noah would if he played the violin. Noah had been gay before he played the violin, but he figured it would be best for him to not tell his father that.Ā
But nowā¦He didnāt have to worry about that. They were both dead, and he was alive. And he had his violin. But this manā¦He didnāt want him here. His music was like a diary. All of his emotions were poured out into it when he playedā¦And he didnāt like the thought of someone seeing him soā¦Weak.Ā
But he didnāt want to start a fight either, especially when he knew he couldnāt win.]
ā¦Okayā¦
[He wasnāt going to put up a fight. But he wasnāt going to let this man win either, Noah told himself. He wouldnāt let the man ruin his day. So he closed his eyes and set his violin in place, and began playing once again.]
[It could be defiance, or maybe determination, that makes this kid decide to play on when faced with Pryor, rooted in the doorway like a particularly annoying tree.
Instead it just seems like heās crumpled at the first sign of pushback. Like weakness. Like a stiff breeze is enough to blow him over, all stuttered words that donāt even make up sentences, trailing off into each other like a whisper instead of a shout, like theyāre barely there at all.
Itās more than annoying, itās intolerable. It itches at him, makes him feel like a bully when all he really wants when he pushes at people is for them to push him back.Ā
He huffs in frustration. Thereās something stirring in him: life coach Pryor, coming to the fore. Itās been too long.]
Really, kid? [He asks, voice pitched over the sweet sound of bow gliding over strings. Pryor, when he speaks, is declarative. His words pierce the air, punch through it. Like his piano playing: assaulting eardrums.] Youāre gonna give up that easily? Come on, ask me to leave again. Say it like you mean it.
Ah shite. [Tommy mutters out. He was hoping for a answer closer toĀ āno-one gives a shitā or, he doesnāt know, some dumb little spot like behind a bike shed.
Thankfully ā and honestly he aināt even surprised ā the question is met with a small uptick. His feelers get a little happy. Itās a better reaction than heād expect from asking how he can be lazy as fuckinā possible.
If Tommyās security class wasnāt upped and if he hadnāt already been kicked out of his last Colony ā itād be a risk worth taking. But it isnāt. He kinda likes a roof over his head that isnāt in ruins, crumbling or leaving him open to angrier, more violent men. He wasnāt cut out for the world before but those were easier streets to live on. This world? Tommyās not built for any part of it.
Heās not going to go sharing this, though.Ā Dumping his personal shit sounds about as pleasant as dumping a literal one on him.] Ai, nap time always sounds like a solid idea. [He flashes a dry grin.]Ā Guess Iāll have tāration out the skips. Sounds like more hassle havinā a talking-to than havinā tā mop a floor.
[Most days, heās really fucking glad that Marine Merchants arenāt considered Elites. He gets fun and freedom that other citizens donāt have, but he gets to fly under the radar as one of the oppressed masses. If the day ever comes that the Colony reconsiders this policy, it may have to be the day that Pryor quits.
He toes a carefully drawn line. When ashore, he gets points deducted for tardiness, for his smart mouth. But itās never enough to get his position stripped from him, just enough to remind them that heās much more tame when heās allowed this small freedom, theĀ privilegeĀ of turning his face to the wind and putting theĀ Colony behind him.Ā
Maybe he likes having one thing in the Colonyās miserable routine existence that makes him special, that sets him apart. Maybe, in spite of how much heāll swear he hates his father, he just likes to sail, something heād learned from him. But the Colony keeps him within a certain set of lines by giving him something heās afraid to lose.Ā
Most people donāt know it, and most people wonāt, because itās totally fucking lame. Nothing sadder than thinking about Pryor Hendricks: semi-rule-abiding-citizen. Pryor Hendricks, going soft in his old age.]
Suit yourself. [He shrugs.] I like the talking to, personally. Nothing better than someone in a self-righteous tizzy when you really couldnāt give less of a shit.
[Noah never liked this day of the year. This day marked the day where Noahās life changed. Where he was able to relax and stop scavenging, and in a sense rejoin civilizationā¦He gained all that at the cost of his parents, however, and sometimes the price took itās toll on him. Which was why he was currently standing outside in a t-shirt and shorts as he moved the bow of his violin gracefully and elegantly against the strings.Ā
The familiar sound relaxed him. Just about any type of music did. There was something about the beat and theā¦The purity of it that called to Noah. Even if some songs talked about sex and drugs, they were still pure. Pure happinessā¦
Noahās bow stopped as he sensed the eyes on him. He hadnāt noticed that he had an audience. His music was personal to himā¦Especially on this horrid day.]
U-Umā¦Can you p-please leave?Ā
[Noah hadnāt intended on it coming out as an insult butā¦His music was personal. It was like his own private diary. And most people would hate it if people read all their secrets and sorrows. Noah didnāt want people hearing his.]
[Once upon a time there had been two brothers, a picture-perfect pair. And, like little wind-up toys, their mother had dressed them up in suits and ties and made them perform for their friends. How darling! How charming! What perfect little sons!
Pryor, on the piano. Erik, the violin. Pryor had been a trainwreck, no discipline and no finesse as his fingers stuttered over keys. Erik, however, had been an angel, and when he put bow to strings the sound soared over Pryorās clumsy playing and turned it into something passable.
Pryor had quit playing the piano as soon as he could get away with it. Erik had kept with the violin, though, and had only gotten better. Itās a sound, then, that will always remind him of his brother. He drifts towards it, however in the doorway of the music room like heās scared somehow to walk over the threshold.
Itās more vulnerable than he cares to be, most of the time. And over such a stupid fucking little thing, like his brother was the only person to ever play the violin and be good at it, like some other dark-haired, snot-nosed kid is enough to make himāfeel something, something other than the peace thatās radiating off of him as he plays.
And maybe thatās whyā(as if he needs an excuse)āwhen he turns on him with a stuttered request, he only sneers, responds with one elegant syllable ā ]
No.

Corbin: lol.perfectly actually. right down to the disney song
Corbin: i'd like a live version of that with you in one of those little hats
Corbin: you could do a strip tease
Corbin: although i guess i still owe you one proper, dont i? maybe that can be your incentive not to get hit by a falling fire rock. not that you need one, i guess.
Pryor: I've got in as text it's as good as a promise. I'm not dead, not dying, and you have to put on a show for me
Pryor: One with nipple-tassels, preferably. Everyone loves a good nipple-tassel. It's a classic.
INFERNO: RefugeĀ ā“Ā open for scavengers
[Thereās a bit of shuffling and scuffling when they first start off, and Alex can hear Pryor making sure everyoneās getting a proper start, keeping together. And then theyāre going about five minutes without much fanfare, which by Alexās books, is a good sign. Not a sign they can relax, but a sign that things could be worse.Ā
Of course, itās always when you first think things are going well, that they start to go badly.Ā
Not that Donovan should be surprised.Ā
A girlāa small one, fragile and about fifteen pounds underweight, easilyātrips over somethingāa rock, a vine, who knew, but somethingāand she flies face first into the dirt with a scream. Alex slows; turns around on the spot.Ā
Sheās fallen at the back of the group, Hendricks nearby. Dry dust has sprayed her face, shot up her nose. By the way her eyes are squeezed shut, sheās probably got dirt in those as well. From Alexās vantage point, he thinks he sees blood, but it looks like it may just be from where her teeth bit into her lip.Ā
He tells the others to stay where they are, and slowly starts to pace back towards Pryor and the girlāBrink, he realizes, as she gets closer, Katy-Something.]Ā
She okay? [He asks as he gets within range.]Ā
[All hail Pryor, post-apocalyptic prophet. He doesnāt know how far they are, now, but as he foresawā(sadly only internally, so no one can recognize his godly foresight and give him his own cult)āsomeone falls on their fucking face.
A scream splits the air, and they all pull up short. She goes down hard and she stays down, hands and knees in the dirt. Thereās blood. Now they have to stop, they have to waste time. Would they have gotten there more quickly if they just did a little power-walkā(maybe a prancercise)ā? The world may never know.
He feels it like a blow: that moment of shock and flailing panic, the way it redoubles into something both dazed and embarrassed at the moment of impact. And despite that echoing feeling, almost like there are pairs of cartoon birds circling around both their heads, he stoops down next to her and he murmurs stupid nonsense words, and he helps her to her feet.Ā
Thereās blood running down her chin as she brushes the dirt and tiny rocks off her hands where they broke her fall, but other than that seems fineāno broken wrist, no twisted ankle, nothing to stop her from completely the rest of this fucking mad dash to safety.Ā
If heās comforting, he canāt quite tell. Whateverās wafting off of her seems just as panicked as before, nothing he can make a dent in by shushing her like a frightened bunny rabbit. Itās liberating in its hopelessnessāwhen the situation is this dire, then he literally canāt make things any worse.Ā
But if heās not comforting, then Alex isnāt comforting. No questions asked, full stop. He allows himself to feel smug at that. At least heās got a (maybe comforting) hand on her shoulder, supporting her as she stands. At least heās addressed words to her, like he knows that she can speak for herself.Ā
āhe turns to her now.] Can you keep going?Ā [She nods almost immediately. He canāt blame her, can only imagine what she must be thinking: if they all die, itās her fault for tripping and holding them up. Fucking sucks. Thatās why Pryor had never hooked up with another clan, once he left the other one. Whether he lived or diedā(and, yeah, he almost fucking died)āit was all on him.]
Okay Rambo, letās move. [And that, of course, is to Alex-of-action-hero-fame.] Iāve got this one.Ā
Favorite foreplay activity?
Punching someone in the fucking face.
Have you told anyone about your brother? Is there anyone you plan to or think you might?
Off the top of my head? I donāt know who Iāve told, really. I donāt know, because itās not like itās a secret. Itās justāsomething I talk about when itās relevant, when I feel like it. Itās not something Iām sobbing about all the time, because Iām not that pathetic. That doesnāt mean itās some deep dark secret. Itās justāa thing.
How many people have you slept with this week?
Just one. Donāt remind me.

Is there anyone here you would protect with your life?
No. Itās not that kind of rodeo, Iām not that kind of self-sacrificing idiot. The only person Iād die for is already dead, and Iām not looking to put up a sign-up sheet for a replacement.

[Lake laughs. Talking to Pryor is kinda like being friends with those jock dudes in highschool that always talked about how manyĀ āchicksā theyĀ ābangedā in the locker rooms. Or, well, they were TALKING about it in the locker rooms, not banging chicks in the locker rooms. Then againāit was probably that too.Ā
But anyway, Pryor sometimes makes Lake feel like heās in a whole other world. Like heās someone else, because Pryor is thisĀ caricatureĀ of Ā a certain kind of dude, and Lake had never really been privy to guys like that before. Even Ryder, with his shameless vulgarity, has a darker, broodier side thatās different than Pryorās outlandishly grotesque charm. He just wishes he were better at knowing what to say back. At being just as cool in this otherwise cool conversation.]Ā
Well⦠thatās weird man, not gonna lie. [He tries for sarcasm, anyway, and itās easier when heās in a good moodāWHY heās in a good mood now of ALL times, he doesnāt know, considering the sky was just like, on FIRE, but he stopped trying to figure out his mood swings a looOOOOOnng time ago. He throws the blond a grin.]Ā
So, wierdo, they shoved me into your room for a while. Not gonna draw dicks on my face while Iām asleep, are you?Ā
[Heās proud. Heās stupidly, self-destructively, really-fucking-proud. Heās attached to this performance of himself, this Pryor Hendricks heād created as a sixteen-year-old kid sitting alone in his bedroom who had decided he was tired of being who he was.
So many years later, heās perfected the performance. Itās real, most of the time, feels realer than whatever stunted shriveled thing he used to be when he was still in the business of contorting himself to try and fit into other peopleāsā(read, predictably, his parentsā)āexpectations.
Itās not real now, but itās pride that keeps him acting like it is. Itās pride thatās an essential part of Pryor Hendricks as he is now, right up there next to not-giving-too-much-of-a-fuck-about-anything.
He compartmentalizes: sarcasm, out; feeling-like-he-might-be-dying-a-little-bit, in. No one has to know. Least of all Lake, who seems to buy into everything that Pryor sells him hook, line, sinker.
Bless his heart. ]
Maybe one day youāll understand. [He grins, like he holds all the secrets to the universe, like they could all be found at the bottom of some adrenaline-soaked fuck. If they could be, Pryor might have been raised up as some post-Apocalyptic God, with all the sage wisdom he would have soaked up.]
Wasnāt planning on it, no, but now youāve given me ideas. I couldā[and now: the thinker, brow furrowed, finger tapping on his mouth until the genius idea strikes]āput your hand in a cup of warm water while youāre sleeping. Thatās supposed to make you piss, right? Or is it cold water? I can never quite remember, but when I figure it out, youāre gonna pee yourself.

Corbin: Right. so it's agreed. assuming we live through all this, you take me with you next time. show me the sights, world traveler.
Pryor: I can show you the world, shining, shimmering, splendid.
Pryor: To your right, there's a pile of rubble. Up further ahead, you can see more rubble. Experts say that this was once a thriving city, but now everyone's dead.
Pryor: Am I tour guiding right?
INFERNO: RefugeĀ ā“Ā open for scavengers
[In truth, Alex would have preferred to have two of himselfāto take both the back and the front, and heād been struggling to decide which he felt least nervous about handing over control.Ā
Yes, itās no secret, that Alexander Donovan is a control freak. He knows it, and he knows others do as well, but it comes from a place of concern, not of mal-intent. The oath heād taken to serve and protect felt like one that applied to his life, his entire existence, not only his job. A job that doesnāt exist anymore, but continues to live in his veins, in the outline of a his position at the Colony, which has always been substantially less clear. A communityās feeble attempt to appear more democratic. To have the lines of itās control be more transparent. It didnāt work, but they continued on as if it did.Ā
His mouth twists a bit, though he shouldnāt be surprised that the forthright Torren is the first to question his authorityāto offer another solution, which he sees as more fit, rather than simply obey because itās been asked of him. And Donovan has to admit that although it unsettles him slightly to be argued with, Pryor is right, and Alex had, after all, posed it as a question.Ā
He makes aĀ consciousĀ effort to reign in his own ego. Choke it with a sure tug of a leather collar, because even heās aware that being right is less important than making the safest choice.Ā
It makes sense, he supposes, but his concern had been that heād wanted to be the one in the back, should any trouble arise behind their backs. Should there be any kind of attack, or should the weakest trip and fall and need assistance. But it makes sense for a leader to lead, and Hendricks is offering to take up the positionāwith unsurprising cheek, of course.Ā
He takes a beat or two to consider, before giving a curt nod.] Fine. Good then. [He only spares him a humorless glance at the joke, but otherwise ignores it. Heās not as well equipped at being light hearted in times of emergency. His old partner on the force had been that person, actually. Heād been the one too serious, always. Perhaps theyād evened each other out.
He lowers his voiceā]Ā JustāĀ [but not wanting to be heard by all, the whisper isnāt quite enough, because the group quickly gathering around them are listening intently, stricken with fear. He switches to telepathy.] Thanks.Ā Just mind the stragglers. A couple of these kids lookĀ about ready to pass out. Keep an eye on them for me.Ā
[A look, and then he turns to the group.] Alright, [he says, raising his voice.] Weāre about ten minutes from the nearest safe haven. A house off the edge of the old town. But we have to run. Keep up. Hendricks here will take the rear. If you need anything, shout, but do not stop running. [He glances up]Ā I donāt know how much of that will make impact, but it doesnāt look more than fifteen minutes away, tops. Letās move.Ā
[Another nod at Pryor, and he takes off jogging through the trees, waving for the others to follow.]Ā
[Itās all a littleāmuch. Rugged action hero, squinting at the sky. Pryor, standing by with arms crossed over his chest and mouth curled in a smirk thatās more like a sneer, because no one can ask him to regulate his face right now. (Thatād just be mean.) The two of them, somehow, together: the most ridiculous buddy cop show in post-apocalyptica. Donovan & Hendricks, at your service.
His sarcasm is like a whip, it wants to lash and crack. What does Donovan think heās going to do? Trod the fallen underfoot and leave them as a sacrifice for some kind of Old-Testament God? Itās almost funny, and by that he means itās resolutely not-funny, how little he seems to believe in anyone other than himself. Or maybe itās just because itās Pryor.
He reins it in. Heās pissy, because thatās how he best keeps everyoneās emotions at bay. He builds an insulating layer of anger around him and lets everything else bounce off. Heās pissy, because the sky decided to fucking fall on everyoneās head on an ordinary summer day. Heās pissy, because heād rather be watching the show from within the Colony instead of playing action hero with Alexander-fucking-Donovan.
Alexander Donovan, who squints at the sky and starts the Doomsday Clock ticking, like heāsāa meteorologist, or an astronomer, orāwhatever the fuck that would be. Pryor doesnāt know, but he quickly diagnoses it as bullshit. Designed to scare everyone around them into running faster.
A mean trick, that is.
And then heās off like a fucking gazelle, bounding through the undergrowth, barely enough time for Pryor to return that stoic-man-nod, not enough time for him to get a quip in. He settles for a steady drip of narration in his head.
He shoos them like chickens, the other survivors who turn to gamely trot behind Donovan. To their credit, whether theyāre crying or snotting or whatever it is theyāre doing, theyāre all running. For now.
Ten minutes running must be a mile, probably a little more, considering the size of their group. Can they run full tilt for a whole fucking mile without someone breaking an ankle, falling on their face? It seems unlikely, especially with that panic nipping at their heels. Is it an unnecessary risk or a necessary one? Only time will tell. Pryor didnāt have to make the call, so itās not his fucking problem. He wonāt have to take any blame.]
Bloody fucking fuck. [He mutters to himself. And then, as promised, takes up the rear.]

[Belonging is a foreign concept to Tommy. Not to be dramatic, or anything, but itās true. The only ones who were getting habitually high were the misfits after all. If he fitted in with the family ā he wouldnāt be where he is today either.Ā
Even a few years at the other Colony and he wouldnāt really have considered himself a proper part of the place.Ā Tommy could easily point out the best spots to hide out or bunk but thatās not really the same as belonging, is it? He was just a nuisance. A very not-harmless sort of nuisance.
Tommy smiles along like heās got a fun little secret. (Itās not fun, but itās still a secret.)
Ā Something to set Tommy even further apart. Like heās watching this conversation rather than being a part of it.] Arenāt you just the right guy tāhand out smokes to, then? [He flashes a dry little smile.] So.Ā
Whereās the best place to skip out on chores and such? Not that Iām planningā tādo that. Obviously.
[āHow can I skip out on chores.ā Bless his heart. If Pryor hadnāt already liked him for his generosity, heād be all over this unabashed laziness.
Pryor: ambling into classes five minutes late with no explanation, taking his seat in the back of the room. Pryor: rinsing and repeating for training, chores. Giving the glaring Elite a smirking ācarry onā or āa wizard is never lateā when the whole class stops to look at him, like heās doing them some kind of favor.
Small pleasures. It wouldnāt do to think about the fact that heās a grown-ass man, now, and that itās demeaning to forever be treated like a truant child. That the time he spends to himself is a gift rather than a right. That heād do a lot more and a lot worse to be able to stay in safety. Not because heās a coward, but because heās smart.]
Youāre shit outta luck, man. Wherever you go, your PDD goes with you. But, on the bright side, they donāt have enough Elites to spare to chase you down when you skip. Theyāll just deduct points. If you make too much of a habit of it, maybe get a strike. [He shrugs, like he isnāt one strike away from being thrown in correctional. Like he isnāt afraid of it. Lies, all of them.] So really, skip wherever you like. Personally, I say, you canāt beat naptime.
CHOOSE ONE: sex, drugs or rock & roll??
To be entirely predictable: sex.
