ISON C/2012 S1 (ISON) war ein Komet, der wahrscheinlich aus der Oortschen Wolke stammte und am 28. November 2013 der Sonne sehr nahe kam. Aufgrund dieser dichten Annäherung gehörte er damit zu den sogenannten Sonnenstreifern. Am 1. Oktober 2013 näherte er sich dem Mars bis auf etwa 10,9 Millionen Kilometer. Im weiteren Verlauf erreichte der Komet am 28. November 2013 seinen sonnennächsten Punkt. Im Perihel – ISON hatte hier eine Bahngeschwindigkeit von etwa 360 km/s – betrug sein Abstand zur Sonne nur rund 0,012 AE (1,8 Millionen Kilometer). Die Temperatur an der Oberfläche des Kometenkerns betrug dabei möglicherweise über 2500 °C. Nach einem starken Helligkeitsverlust ging man davon aus, dass der Komet bei seiner Sonnenpassage wegen der hohen Temperatur und der starken Gezeitenkräfte (Roche-Grenze) zerbrochen sei. Auch wenn Aufnahmen der SOHO-Raumsonde so interpretiert wurden, dass zumindest ein Teil des Kometen das Perihel überstanden habe, verdichtete sich ab dem 2. Dezember 2013 die Überzeugung, dass der ehemalige Komet sich nun als Staubwolke durch das Sonnensystem bewege. Letzte Aufnahmen des Hubble-Weltraumteleskops vom 18. Dezember 2013 zeigten keinerlei Überreste des Kometen. Die Koordinaten zum vermuteten Aufenthaltsort wurden aus den letzten Positionen berechnet, an denen ISON noch sichtbar war. In den Aufnahmen hätten Objekte bis zur 25. Magnitude dargestellt werden können, was Trümmern von etwa 160 Metern Durchmesser oder mehr entspräche.
