Headcanon - The Bobblehead
So I noticed this some time ago after watching the series through for gods-know whatever number it was. I shared it with my best friend who in turn shared it with others, but Iâve been meaning to write a post about this, since I wholly endorse it with my interp of Mike.
So the idea is this: Mutt isnât the car. The car is an extension of Mutt. So who (or what) is Mutt?
Mutt is the bobblehead, the little dog on his dashboard.
Itâs such a small detail to miss, but I started to notice that Mike rarely bats an eye when the car is attacked or destroyed yet he addresses the dog, pats it, apologizes to it when he does something to/with the car. The car is rebuilt time and again, but the bobblehead is never replaced because he saves it from destruction every time.
I like to believe his sister gave him Mutt. Capri heard when her brother joined the fight against Kane and as an initiation, sent him a present (or probably had said present left with Jacob to be given; thatâs a whole huge thing for another post though). Itâs a sign to him that even through what seems like the worst of times, itâs good to rebuild and keep fighting for what he believes in. So long as he keeps a piece of that reminder, heâll constantly rebuild and rebuild until the fighting ends.
Mutt is his symbol, a sentiment, that he needs to keep fighting. Heâll keep that symbol in one piece as long as he can and use it to continually rebuild.
Finally got a playlist put together for this blog, with help from master-playlist-builder @dystopiandisastercontrol in my mind anyway; sheâs done so many, it seemed logical to ask her for help I donât like autoplay, so itâs not on. If something sounds off in quality or whatnot, let me know.
As a sidenote, ohhey. not so New Mike blog floating around here. Was going to wait to drop an announcement until I had a promo ready, but figured Iâll post one when I have one instead. so hi all
A happy harvest from those down in the Cemetery Basin!
As per every year, Death puts out a splendid public buffet affair, featuring things heâs grown and things heâs been allowed to catch in celebration of the harvest season, and so long as his space is treated as a neutral place and all rivalries are dispelled, all are welcome to partake of the fare!
#inktober 6. MotorcitizensâŚnever stop living fast & living free ;_;
Progress on a thing Iâm working on. Gonna start on Death either tonight or tomorrow, depending.Â
Have a half-flash War besides.

"We meet again, Burner."
Mike had arrived before the order placed earlier was even ready. This was no big surprise, really. Mike Chilton was known for being early or late, rarely on time. There were a few people around who apparently thought him being on time was a myth.
Antonio sought to provide him with a glass of water while he waited, which was taken gratefully and kept at hand. Between the robust Italian, Jacob, and Death, he was certain he was staying hydrated, fed, and rested. Or at least the first two. He was still working on that last one.
The low voice directed at him caught his attention, brown eyes snapping up toward the Amazon. A quirked tired smile was offered with a raised hand. He had no intent to be anything but friendly, as evidenced by the small joke that followed.
âHey. Fancy running into you here.â
chilton be with you
Deathâs turn to tsk then. âGonna hafta get a hold oâFamine later, tâen.â he muttered. Of course, it was countered with Warâs low laugh at the promises of Mike keeping out of trouble.
âIâll believe zat ven I see it.â she told him before it lessened some. âZat sounds gute. Canât sleep lately.â
No surprise there. Thankfully, she could tell the difference between tones in what was innuendo and what wasnât. Therefore his genuine offer was met with the near-usual genuine acceptance. Besides! She missed him as her warm spot. Mike was nothing short of a miniature sun in terms of warmth production. He always had been.Â
However, even she knew his own penchant for falling asleep once comfortable and safe. A glance was shared with Death at that, he returned it. There didnât need to be any words between them. In the inevitable case the Burner fell asleep, the Haitian shaman would keep an eye on her.
Death snorted. âConsiderinâ sheâs âereâŚâ He jerked a thumb in Warâs direction as she grabbed the bucket for the orange blossoms. ââŚAnâ you only show up when thereâs nuttinâ else tâbe doinâ? Is obvious. Jusâ glad yâmanaged tâstay outta the Dukeâs clutches tâis time târoughâŚâ
The last time the taller boy had a run-in with the Duke, heâd come back almost torn apart. Patching him up and making sure heâd be alright was all Death could do to make sure War didnât fly off the deep-end and try to flay the limo lord in public. As entertaining as that would have been, the Haitian begrudgingly acknowledged that the ever-obnoxious Duke helped keep the precarious gang balance in the city under control.
Up the stairs and out of the greenhouse, he went, setting his bucket in the deep service-sink in the back alcove of the shop. He would tend to the contents in a moment, turning about to grab a small pot from a shelf nearby.
âFirst, I needja tâgrab mâpress ânâ miniburner,â He chuckled a little at realizing his own pun, but didnât dwell on it too long. âHow I keep puttinâ it up outta reachâs beyond me. Good tâinâ I got someâne tall tâday.â
He turned about after that to reach under the sale counter and pulled out three decent-sized bins filled with plastic baggies. Various dried concoctions were in each, pieces of paper stapled to them. He set the bins on the counter and unloaded them in rows, setting one aside once empty.
âTâen? We get tâthe mundane portion oâthâafternoon, wi.â he stated. âWhile Iâm cleaninânâpreppinâ what I got, I need you tâseperate out my orders! Anytâinâ older tâan a week on pick-up? One bin. Everytâinâ else? Alphabetized ânâ put back unner, tanpri souple.â
Mike inwardly shuddered at the mention of the Duke. That tracksuited maniac caused more problems for everyone around him that anyone else he knew. Considering the usual company Mike kept outside the Burners, that was saying something. Taking a route that completely bypassed the Dukeâs central territory certainly had something to do with arriving in one piece this time. He was learning. It only took a couple of years to figure out how to widely avoid those he didnât want to deal with at certain times.Â
Heâd taken the eight months of quiet after the last massive assault to actually learn territory boundaries and easements of the gangs throughout Motorcity. Knowing those had helped keep conflict between the Burners and the others to a relative minimum. It still happened from time to time, but not as frequently as it had in the past.
On returning to the main floor, he shut the door to the greenhouse behind him. Courtesy to Death, who always asked that door keep shut. A chuckle escaped him at the first request. It didnât stop him from walking to the shelves in question and reaching up to pull the equipment asked down.
âI see. You only like me for my tallness.â
âMight be your brand of magic, how you get things up there. Explains how you can reach this high.â
It was a joke, obvious by the jovial lilt on his voice.
âMaybe we should rearrange the shelves to avoid this problem in the future?â
That was only a suggestion, though. He didnât expect it to be taken seriously in any manner. The press and burner were set on the counter within reach of Death and he turned around to see what else was in store. A small huff of breath escaped him at the news. Looked like getting things down from the shelves was about as exciting as it was going to be for a while.
Admittedly, Mike hovered a moment over the Haitianâs shoulder (although that wasnât hard) before he realized what he was doing and took a step back. He nodded his head as the information was relayed, stepping around Death as they went about their separate ways.
He bent over the counter, looking over the baggies splayed out. Eyes flicked over the labels, paying close attention to the dates after the title-field P/U: and putting them in one or the other bin as asked. He couldnât help the inaudible tap of one boot heel on the floor. Tedium did that to him, fidgeting was all he could do to keep still. But, it was something to do and by the substantial amount the overdue bin was accumulating, it was definitely necessary that it was done.
Heâd been at it for a short while, having managed to move through half the second line before a thought occurred to him. He stood up straight to stretch, turning his head over his shoulder.
âHey, uh...Do you want me to arrange the overdue ones by name or date?â
That was probably a good thing to get out of the way. Really, it should have been asked at the beginning, but better late than after.
"BONJALOHA MR. CHILTON!"
There were many ways to express hackles being raised in human beings. In Mikeâs case, it was lowering his head so the coat collar covered his neck completely.
âGreat. This guy...â
He turned on his heel to face the other. Anyone else, he wouldnât feel much inclined to do so. But over the years, he learned it best to never have your back face the Duke for too long.
âIs there something I can help you with? Or is this another trouble-outing?â
His bet was on the latter. Since when did the Duke ever actually need his help when it wasnât beneficial to him directly. The spindly other seemed to make it a game of meddling in the affairs of everyone in the city at least once a week. It was probably Mikeâs turn.
"Listen here, little man. If you wanna swoon your lady girl real good you got to put some muscle into it. Like! REALLY show off those pecs and then flex your arm... Like... So! Hnnggghhh! And then they will fall flat at your feet! Easy peasy, trust the Texiesy!"
Texas had that innate ability to walk into a room and silence it as soon as he opened his mouth. Which was what had happened here. Mike had no sooner started a greeting when Texas broke out into giving him...dating advice? Texas Style. Any confusion left from the blunt interruption melted away before the end, a subtle half-smirk crossing his face.
âIâll...keep that in mind.â
He wasnât going to shoot him down for giving it to him. Tex always meant well, even if a little...forward about his methods.
âIâm sure sheâll love it, buddy.â
