i met one of my aunt's archaeologist friends/colleagues earlier today & he was telling me about legends that not too far from here there's the ghosts of a roman legion that people see walking up the cliff towards the edge of the sea and then off the edge of the cliff and onwards, because the coastline has receded so much since roman times that the 'land' they're used to walking on goes on far past the point it falls into the sea today. and like. OUGH. In light of the Odyssey movie coming out this is my formal PSA that Helen of Troy is actually Helen of Sparta, Troy is the city she was stolen and brought to. The entire Trojan war is the Greeks trying to get her back from Troy, because she is from Sparta. I feel like we all collectively forget this.

Because the word "abduction" fools us. It makes it sound non-consensual. But also:

Helen can consent all she wants, but in archaic and classical Greek culture she doesn't have the right to make that decision for herself. She's abducted--quite literally stolen--because Menelaus has rights over her.

The paradox of doing feminist analysis of ancient texts is that the concept of consent breaks down in the face of female legal and social status combined with an almost complete lack of female-authored primary sources. We literally don't know what women were thinking, and most texts frame "consent" partly if not entirely from the perspective of the closest male authority, often completely without reference to the woman's perspective. Homer and other sources on the epic cycle are clear that Helen agreed to leave Sparta with Paris, but other stories are much more ambiguous.

And what happens is that readers know or assume this about ancient culture, so in cases where it is ambiguous--or even where it's clear that the woman consented--we still categorize it as rape, often translating ambiguous or neutral native vocabulary to say so, because we assume that violent men are making violent decisions at every moment. As interpreters we can be just as complicit in removing ancient women's agency in attempting to speak up for them.

#this but add in the hanged slave women/maids in the Odyssey #oftentimes we gloss over the fact that they were pointed out for their trechery by another slave woman-- Eurycleia #and that the 38 other women out of the 50 maids cried and embraced Odysseus AFTER the hanging was carried out #or the fact that Telemachus on his OWN decided on hanging.#Odysseus wanted to give them quick deaths (and the interesting thing is there's a parallel going on between his experiences with goddeses #and the slave women themselves-- neither had much choice in the matter. But they still chose something)#and that choice is obviously done under duress. But it is still a choice. And that is the tragedy #women have choices. Saying they don't is just erasing what agency they had at the time #but the people and society around them react to that choice in different ways #in a patriarchal and slave owning society it's going to favour a noble man #wordsmithspeaks

I should do this for all the epic cycle characters tbh. But I think Odysseus is Chaotic Neutral and Penelope is True Neutral.
