idk I can tell that some tumblrinas are not up on fat politics because I see a lot of people saying stuff like “it’s better to be a little fat than waste your life trying to be thin” or like “it’s chic to have a little belly” like okay but there are fat people who are “a lot fat” and have “a lot of belly” which everyone is weirdly silent on all the time. Like the fattest person on earth still deserves to exist in human society with joy and dignity regardless of how they got to that weight or how many health conditions they have as a result of their personal actions…that should be everyone’s baseline here I’m not really sure what’s complicated about it

Can I be honest. I think the world may have had enough of American poets writing pieces about how it's weird to go about daily life while your government commits genocide abroad. I don't know if anyone needs to do another one of those

in all fairness it really is a bizarre/depressing/powerless feeling and it's not weird to explore that through art. But at some point it really just starts to feel like navel gazing. Like are these really the experiences and viewpoints we need to be centering right now

As a spoken word poet and stage performer- no, U.S. American voices about genocide abroad are not the voices that should be centered. But here in the U.S., as U.S. Americans, it is the voice we have. I help run a poetry slam circuit and I promise you it's the poets who share the most kinship with the peoples at the receiving end of imperial aggression that receive the most accolades and get the recognition they deserve. However, I don't think this means that other people shouldn't make art about their experiences, try to evoke emotional response from their peers about it, try to draw attention to issues with their art, etc. Activist and Poet Laureate Michelle Myers said that writing political poems is a tool for social change because it helps people create a cultural narrative- by writing and sharing poems, we define culture and set the bar in our communities for what is and is not acceptable, usual, etc. So. I would respond to your first post by saying that "It's weird to go about my daily life while my government commits genocide" is a pretty weak theme for a poem when the poem could be a revolutionary manifesto, or an oral history of the labor movement, or any other more action-driven call. But. I think that discouraging anyone from making art, especially art that documents and analyzes a cultural moment, is a pretty indefensible stance in the era of generative AI, revisionist history, and post-literacy. We should all support and center the voices of people directly impacted by Imperial aggression. And! Everyone should make art that grapples with this horrible time in history.
