Bert Williams (left) and George Walker (right), featured in @posterhousenyc's "Act Black" exhibition curated @_espranzahumphrey, were among the most celebrated theatrical duos of the early 20th century.
Williams intamously pertormed in blackface while Walker cultivated the image of an urbane black dandy. Here, nearly matching top hats and coats collapse that distinction. Both appear stylish, modern, and self-possessed, revealing fashion as another stage for performing black identity.

Ghana's old commericial trucks werent just transportation they were moving newspapers, philosophers, comedy and prayer books!
The inscriptions not only reflected the owners beliefs, ambitions, frustrations, heartbreak and sense of humour but would even comment on the (poor or excellent) state of the vehicles!
Here are some photographs taken in a busy truck terminal in 1953 featuring passengers and inscribed trucks.
Jean-Michel Basquiat was in his mid-twenties when he created this work, entitled "Negro Period
(1986)," whose epic scale and profound title, according to Christie's, "instantly place it in the pantheon of great Basquiat paintings musing on the history of the black struggle."
Christie's continues, "The painting's diverse and ultimately elusive imagery is pervaded with the sense that the artist was talking to himself, exorcising demons, and trying to explain the way of things whilst simultaneously underscoring his fight against racial inequality. Having noted that museums and galleries lett an entire segment of the population unrepresented, Basquiat addressed this glaring lacuna by declaring that 'The black person is the protagonist in most of my paintings' (J.-M. Basquiat, quoted in C. McGuigan, 'New Art, New Money, The New York Times Magazine, 10 February 1985).
In this way, Negro Period encapsulates the artist's desire to elevate the status of the African American male, making a painting that is both about black people and for black people."

Life in the Mediterranean: Through the Lens of Konrad Helbig (1917-1986).
Life in the Mediterranean: Through the Lens of Konrad Helbig (1917-1986).
From the streets of Sicily to the landscapes of Greece, Konrad Helbig spent decades photographing the Mediterranean and the people who inhabited it. His images capture a world of sun-drenched landscapes, everyday encounters, ancient architecture, and intimate portraits of young men.
Working across the region from the 1950s onward, Helbig created an expansive photographic record of Mediterranean life; at once documentary, personal, and deeply sensual.
