1. Student, 1968, Wayne Thiebaud.
2. Girl with Pink Hat, 1973, Wayne Thiebaud.
Inside L.A.âs Museum of Contemporary Art, viewing one out of the 11 paintings by Mark Rothko that is a part of MOCAâs permanent collection. Shot by none other than my friend and lover, Grace Cha.
Joan Brown, Noel in the Kitchen, oil on canvas, 1964.
â..at this early stage in Brownâs career, her handling of paint was rawâalmost wildâand resulted in thickly built-up surfaces. âI loved what happened when I was using the trowel,â she remarked, â[and] the physical exuberance of just whipping through it with a big, giant brush.ââ (Courtesy of San Francisco MoMA)
Joan Brown was a pivotal artist of the second generation of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. When this painting was created, she was wife to Manuel Neri and mother to Noel.
This painting is 60âł x 108âł. A large and wide one, I felt as though I could viscerally feel each stroke. A complete euphoric experience; it was pure bliss.
I found this on Pinterest while looking for photos of ZoĂŤ Kravitz. Immediately, my eyes were buzzing; I was drawn to its simplicity and contrast of the different hues. I was pleased with how you could visibly see paint marks within each circle, reminding you of its presence as a painting behind the screen. The ambiguous lines are resemblant of mountains, and I appreciated the warm and pastel colors against striking black.Â
I donât think there was a name in the caption attached to this photo, yet I didnât pause to think of it twice.
Too often artists go unnoticed and arenât given credit where itâs due. I find this one form of laziness and outright ignorance in society, and Iâm equally guilty of it.
I will make a greater effort to give deeper thought about artists and the art they create. I do not wish for any form of half-assery in my life where I admire an artistâs work but refuse to learn about it and what it entails â the culture, stories or vision behind them. I refuse to not remember something as simple as their name.
