then he brought up her daughter, and alex felt like she couldn’t breathe anymore. so blinded by the rush of emotion she couldn’t see the signs. “i’m not going to let that happen.”alex whispered as she shook her head furiously, “i’m not going to let any of this happen.” 

"I know you won’t because you are Alex Danvers. Kara isn’t herself without you,” he bowed his head. “If you’re willing, I am ready to do everything in my power to protect her.” 

"Mike Matthews,” the faux named rolled off his tongue with ease. “I am trying very hard not to be offended.” The smile rolled up on lips as he took in the lack luster warrior. All of the tales that he had been told about her didn’t measure up to the image before him. “I think I’m owed a drink now.” 

Lex’s footfalls were quiet as he approached his henchman. 

“Non-El? Progress report. How is our little plan coming along?”

"You know you’re not as clever as you believe yourself be, Mr. Luthor.” Mon el turned on his heels with a deep sigh. “I’m getting tired of wearing this face.” The deep bravado that reverbed in his voice melted off with the purring softness that carried a Parisian undertone. Laura has been under this alias for weeks now and she missed her own face. Madam Rouge was an impeccable infiltrator. Who would have thought it would be this easy to weasel into Supergirl’s little world.

His inner musings chuckled at the drama that would soon unfold and engulf this city. If only they were all aware of the grim future ahead. “I remember when you used to spin while I would sling drinks. Seems like a lifetime ago,” he chimed in.

 “It’s good to see you again, Donna.” 

alex’s eyes flickered down quickly to the baby monitor, a soft shush passing her lips at mon el’s outburst as she waited and listened for any hitch in ellie’s breathing – but her daughter remained sound asleep despite the palpable tension that permeated the air and soiled the apartment’s atmosphere. but she agreed with what he said. kara was good, through and through, and self-sacrificing. alex couldn’t put a bet on a kara’s goodness because it might be a bet she’d lose.

“mon el,” alex spoke out his name as she shook her head, “that makes no sense.” she opened her eyes, looking up at him pleadingly. “i know you’re keeping something from me. we won’t be able to fix this if you’re not going to be completely honest. what are you talking about?”

"I can’t say I’m proud of it.” Mon el bowed his head in shame. He had a mission to fulfill. The future depended on it. There was no margin of error left. This new chapter would be paved no matter the cost to this world. “The first time I went back Kara wasn’t acting like herself. She was self isolating. I never figured out why because when I arrived it was the moment she died. The second and third I had jumped in time just after it happened. Time is fickle. All I know is that Kara loses her hope and we lose her.” 

He swallowed back the faux lump in his throat. Time to sell it. “My..every time I went back to fix it..I began to lose a piece of my memory. I have all these different conflicting timelines playing in my head and I won’t be able to make the jump again. Without me, you and the team won’t be able to save Kara...” he paused for a beat. Mon el pinched the bridge of his nose with a shallow exhale. “..and when Kara die, you’re inconsolable, and Ellie chooses a darker path in the future. I was hoping I’d jump before you get her in your custody.” The lies spilled out so masterfully. 

Thank god you’re just as stupid in this life as you were in the others.

“I’ve missed you,” he smirked amongst the chaos. Querl’s unfurling flurry of inquiry only slowed down this process. Was everyone bound to this time this chatty? At the very least, he didn’t have to fear meeting physical violence as the hands of his friend. “You know how fragile time is. If I tell you what’s happening, we will be tampering with the future even more than I am right now. I just need the ship, okay?” 

Looking down as the bullet dropped to the floor after hitting his cheekbone, Kal couldn’t help but wonder why these street punks still thought conventional weapons would harm him (or his counterpart). With a sigh and a slightly wry upward twitch of his lips, he flicked his gaze back up and relieved the man of his gun with a motion fast enough for the Flash to be proud of.

Crushing it in his hand and letting the pieces drop to the floor he turned his attention to the man he’d stepped in to assist and blinked in surprise.

“Mon El?”

His lips glistened from the tart bite of his own blood. Things just kept getting interesting on this planet, didn’t they? Who would have thought the blunt hilt of a gun would inflict such a superficial wound. In a flash, all of the buzzing violence stilled before the blurring red and blue figure. 

Interesting.

The intriguing recognition flicked on the other’s face as if they knew each other. Mon el couldn’t quite place this face from his timeline. “Superman...just not my superman.” 

"We need to get down to the bottom of it before things get worse.” He signed. “It’s not your fault, Lena. I know that look. I’ve seen that same look when my mother attacked this city in the mirror. We can save her but we can’t tell her.”

“that makes…no sense…” she whispered, shaking her head barely as she looked up at mon el, feeling like someone had punched her in the chest and left her hollowed out, breathless. “i can - i can arrange a trip to earth-1 in the morning, but i’m coming with you.” alex tried to find the fraying threads of logic to latch onto them desperately and try to create a sensible plan of action.

“do we tell her?” alex whispered, unsure, time travel was sensitive. mon el was already breaking a hundred different rules by telling her why he was really her. “wouldn’t that break time?” alex shook her head – if protecting kara meant to keep this from her, then alex would do it. knowing her sister, she would charge headfirst into a losing fight if it meant saving lives. alex was quickly realizing she was not so salient. “what else do you know, mon el, who is the unknown player?”

Mon el frowned at her stipulation. His minor interference with time came with it’s own rippling effect. What if in their counter measure against this resulted in Alex’s demise. So many things rode on this woman’s shoulders. Sucking in a deep breath, he rubbed away the tension that mounted in his temples. “The more help the better, I suppose. We don’t have time to waste. I’ve tried this several times and this is my last shot to get it right.” 

“No!” His volume a little louder than he intended. Schooling his emotions, he lowered his tone. “No, we can’t tell her. If we do, we can possible force her into a self fulfilling prophecy. We both know Kara will choose someone else’s life over her own. If we tell her that it’s her future, who knows what she’ll do.” He feared that she would simply accept it and move forward with her heroics. 

“I wish I knew, Alex. I know that’s not what you wanted to hear but in my attempts to save her. I..” he paused with a thickness mounting on the back of his tongue. “I’ve experienced some conflicting versions of this timeline and the old one.” He didn’t have the courage to say that parts of him was compromised.   

"You think you’re that good, Carter?” Mon el chuckled at the thought. His hazy mindset may have jumbled up some of the important details of the past but he’d never forget this man’s infallible confidence. “I promise you my intentions are pure. If they weren’t, I could have killed that guy. I didn’t.” 

Clark giggled at the person sitting across from him. Wow, whatever Lois brought home from her space bar crawl back on their Earth was extremely potent! He wasn’t usually one to drink, but given the circumstances, celebrations were in order. He just found out he was a father, and if that wasn’t something to celebrate, he wasn’t sure what was. As he laughed, his nose scrunched up and his eyes closed as the quiet giggles continued to bubble forth.

“Does it always feel like this? Floaty and fuzzy?”

“Yes so it’s best to chug it.” 

"It’s a part I need to fuel my ship. Upon my arrival, it burn out and it’s my only chance to get back to where I’m from.”

Mon el knew coming here was a risk. All of the variable changes in the future left so many gaps in his understanding of the present. Things were influx and there was telling what this would do in the long run. He was running out of time to trial and error. This was his last change to make a different or be ripped apart by the strangling fabric of time. “All I know if she gets into a fight she can’t win. All of the history books basically erase her completely except when they celebrate her death. I need to find Kara and go from there. Can you help me do that?”
