You're laughing? Kenna Rys is a pale, blue-eyed, dirty blonde and you're laughing?
im back in the choices world for the first time in a while (thank you, blades 2 and guinevere). but i'm diamond mining the smut books and the thing i noticed that is just incredibly frustrating is that there's absolutely nothing to them if you're not paying diamonds. like, at least in romance/fantasy stories, sex scenes are fun little bonuses - they're additions to the story, not the basis of the story. whereas with the smut books, the entire basis of the story is sexual chemistry and instant attraction. and yet for some reason, the actual steamy scenes are still paywalled, meaning that if you don't pay you don't get any actual payoff to the story at all.
i know smut books are deeply unserious and not the reason anyone here actually still plays choices. but this particular thing is irking me so bad and idk if anyone else has the same problem.
Oh my god Tyril’s route carries so much angst right now. We meet him in book 1 and he’s been trying to find a way to save Kaya for almost a year and now when he’s supposed to be at peace he has to spend another year trying to get his lover back.

"You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me"
The asylum they raised me in:
Not to be that twitter guy, but it sounds like you're complaining about the fact that the game has gender options in the first place.
You could just. Hc LI is a lesbian in your playthrough. No one would stop you. But I think it's important to remember when making a post about any non-gender locked books, that not everyone is playing the same as you are. The ambiguity is not there to erase gay and lesbian rep, it's there so everyone can idk self-insert a little better. As much as it's possible anyway with a choices book.
No I know! That's what I actually did originally. I HC-ed Cas in my playthrough as lesbian, and immediately got 3 anons saying I'm erasing Bi rep because every time an MC is gender customizable the LIs have to be bi. Which, imo, is strange! I get that the politics are complicated in a choose your own adventure game, so ultimately I just ignore it most of the time. Because obviously you should have the ability to self-insert how you want.
I don't know how clearly I'm making my point - I like that LIs are romanceable regardless of how the player selects their protagonist. I guess that I'm just pointing out that 'bi-by-default' is different from intentional, thoughtful representation.
Ultimately, I do think that this argument just goes in circles and has no real solution. But I will say that lashing out at people for headcanoning LIs as gay or lesbian is fundamentally unproductive.
John in TUH is actually one of the better done customizable LIs and does have a lot of specil dialogue for the Indian version.
Interesting! I played him as Indian and thought it felt somewhat...generic to any POC LI? Like he talks about being different from his brother, but no specifics about his heritage or his connection to the country. Maybe I'm being nitpicky because I'm of a South Asian background, but I think it would've been enriched with more stuff about where his birth parents came from, or maybe being mistaken for a sepoy when he was on duty, since the Crown's army was heavily racialized - I guess I was just looking for something more.
Granted, I could've missed a diamond scene somewhere, and I wasn't active on here at all during the book's release, so I guess benefit of the doubt? But I still think my point stands, and it could've been stronger if he wasn't customizable.
actually, whenever mc is gender of choice, lis are considered to be bisexual.
Okay I'm sorry I'm just not very familiar with Choices sexuality discourse. I'm bi, I was hc-ing Cas as a lesbian in my playthrough, I wasn't actually thinking very hard about the content of my post. That being said, for the future I'll keep in mind that she's bi.
However, I also think that this generally hits the nail on the head about my issue with customizable race and genders in this game. It completely erases potential for more specific representation, and means that everyone is just...bi by default. Want lesbian rep? Or gay rep? Nope, we only have ambiguous stuff to avoid any kind of accountability. Or the characters are presented as weirdly racially ambiguous in the text when, in reality, their race should influence their dialogue at least slightly. You're telling me that John from the Unexpected Heiress has the exact same dialogue when he's white and when he's Indian? That makes zero sense. Anyway, I digress.
I guess the point I was *actually* trying to make is that the dynamic between Cas and Gabe changes when they're both men v/s a man and a woman (or even two women). I was cringing at the number of textposts implying that Gabe and Cas should "ignore MC and kiss" because that has different implications when I'm playing a canonically queer romance route already. Not sure if that makes sense, but that's kind of where my thoughts are at with the current shipping of Cas and Gabe.

bold of you to assume that gabe isn't also a lesbian
