I accidentally picked up two novels that center around families affected by having family members deployed to Vietnam. The Women is Frankie McGrath's story of being a combat nurse, then returning to the US to the stigma of being a vet. Summer of 69 stays home with the family in Nantucket when Tiger Levin is drafted.
I didn't realize how compelling the stories of this era are. I'll be looking for more unique Vietnam War-era his fic!

Reading this morning. Renata Adler is a joy.
"We are thirty-five. Some of us are gray. We all do situps or something to keep fit. I myself wear bifocals. Since I am not yet used to wearing specs at all, I tend to underestimate the distance required, for instance, for kisses on the cheek. If the other person wears glasses, too, we are likely to have a brushing clack of frames."

I loved When All Is Said, even though it is pretty sad. The premise got me: an old man feeling close to the end of a long life goes to his local pub and proceeds to say a toast to each of the five most influential people in his life. This gets emotional, as you can imagine. It's the perfect way to slowly reveal big secrets or twists, and Anne Griffin does this masterfully.
