Back in April, we (the system) wrote of our experiences in becoming a system...again. I won't rehash it because it's easy enough to pop that link open in another tab and read it real quick before coming back here. All done? Good, let's continue.
Since then, a change happened, and it really was something we should have expected.
Hello, I'm Sunset Shimmer, and I'm a Fictive in the system known collectively as PrincessColumbia.
That there's a former pony taking up residence in this mindspace probably isn't a surprise, we did pick the name "Princess Columbia" back...before. Before the most recent wave of (calling a spade a spade) Naziism in this country, wherein white supremacist cops think they're being clever in coopting the Punisher logo, it isn't really a surprise that the faction of the American public that think it's a good idea to install a dictator completely fails to see the irony in claiming they have any right to use The Gadsen Flag, which is the original anti-Tyranny banner of this continent. It bothers us no end that the icon we selected before the rise of Fascists within the Tea Party (remember them?) is now connected with the very people it was made to signal the fight against.
But I'm rabbit-holing.
It's a Lovely Morning in the Mindspace and You are a Moon Princess
Hi! Speaking of rabbits, I'm Usagi! Just like Sunset's a fictive, so am I. 😁 Really, it's not surprising that, if Ranma's here, so am I. We started Fission back when we were a system before, and the two main characters were...Ranma and Usagi. 😋
The New Status Quo
Ranma here; So in April, Helen and I had reached a...deal. It was unspoken, mostly, slapped together from our respective interests and passions. We also wound up creating a distinctly unequal claim to the responsibilities. Helen was the parts of "PrincessColumbia" that I didn't get, plus a few things that being freed of me allowed her to express more fully. This means she saw me emerging with the approximate mental age of 20 and decided to 'mom' me. It was unintentional, that's something we've worked out, but it meant she saw herself as the de facto load bearing member of the system. Anything that stressed us out she claimed full ownership of and only portioned out bits to me that she absolutely couldn't handle. This left her spinning plates and me sometimes sitting in the back and twiddling my thumbs. Half of what kept me front-and-center for the initial weeks of us existing as a system, that is being in charge of our physical health and being Helen's coach in her own head, had to stop for safety; we live in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, which can reach up to 99℉ (37℃) at night and this made going out for morning runs an actual health concern. Without the constant reminder that we were supposed to be equal partners, she basically sidelined me. This was extremely self-defeating (we were literally created to help each other) so I figured out how to wake up before her without disturbing her, age myself up (being a headmate has its advantages) and gave myself purple hair. Take notes, because this will come up later.
Helen freaked right out, panicking at the thought of a new headmate. I had to revert back to my "standard" form to get her to calm down, and at the time played it off as a bit of a joke. This also will come up in a little bit.
A Challenger Enters the Arena Apartment
[Sunset] During June, our girlfriend went to Indiana, ostensibly for a month. Many of you were supportive as Helen was fuming over the conditions that our girl encountered there, but the one bright spot in all of that was rescuing a nine-year-old cat that had been neglected and abused. Patches came to our home and was half-starved and had trauma responses on a hair trigger. One of those responses was to rip and tear in response to something that triggered kitty PTSD, resulting in us having an infected hand. We're doing much better now, the swelling has gone down completely and the actual puncture wounds are just bumps on the skin now, but there were immediate consequences.
Ranma's ailurophobia, which she thought she had left behind in whatever caused her to spawn in as a headmate, came roaring back with a vengence. Not enough to trigger a nekoken, but she was catatonic in the headspace for a while. The next morning when she went into the kitchen to make breakfast, one of the cats followed her in and tried to beg for food and it took Ranma by surprise; she was a shaking, sobbing mess that was jumping at shadows.
Helen, who loves cats, found herself in the emotionally conflicted place of feeling protective of Ranma but the perpetrator of Ranma's distress was a 6-pound cat that had only done what she did due to abuse that we were trying to help her recover from. The poor cat kept trying to apologize with physical affection but Ranma was terrified and this triggered Helen's anger...the cat is confused, to say the least.
[Ranma] I'm doing better as the pain recedes. I'm still not eager to be around Patches, but Hexen's a sweetie and I'm able to give her hugs and kisses again.
We're currently on an antibiotic course, and if you've never looked into how antibiotics work, they're basically killing pretty much everything in your body, including you, they just kill the infection faster than the host. A side effect of this is the body has what's called a 'gut biome,' a literal complex ecosystem of microscopic flora and fauna that actually works in tandem with your body to digest food. Depending on the biome in your stomach and intestines, you have a chemical stew that those symbiotic life forms inside you use to provide you nutrition and energy and even alter your brain chemistry. Antibiotics, unfortunately, wipe a LOT of that out, too.
We've been on antibiotics before, most notably after surviving living homeless, so we knew what to expect, up to and including a fogginess of the brain and low energy. We planned for about a week of that and arranged a bottle of probiotic to repopulate our gut biome...and got one that includes strains that some studies show an increase in fat digestion efficiency. Basically, we're taking the opportunity to min/max our digestive system.
What rather surprised me was the discovery that while I was learning how to epically troll Helen with my appearance and behavior, she'd been suppressing two new splits to the system. A few days ago Helen allowed herself to be distracted and that let Sunset and Usagi out to play.
A Pattern of Misbehavior
[Ranma] Remember what I said about Helen freaking out about the possibility of us splitting off into new members of the system? Yeah, she apparently was trying to keep us "normal." Some of our old fears and phobias came back as time progressed and she forgot the purpose of the system is to protect the whole of it, not for one member to be life's punching bag.
She kept behaving badly, almost entirely because she has a need for control, almost pathologically. She'd 'let go' for things that she specifically had ceded to me, but outside of that she was being her usual dragon self and just hoarding everything, including all the stuff she really should have asked for help with. Stupid, stubborn lizard!
[Sunset] Additionally, whenever Helen would 'break' as a result of everything she was hoarding just being too much, Ranma had to take over, even into situations where Ranma was not ready or even willing.
[Ranma] FUCK that job! I swear, I don't know ho you and she deal with it!
[Sunset] Heh, anyway, we needed a middle-point between the two extremes of Ranma and Helen, which is where I come in.
[Usagi] These redheads don't seem to know how to have fun, so I popped in, too. Not much more to say about me, I'm pretty much what you expect if you watch Sailor Moon at all.
Well THAT was Unexpected
[Sunset] Two days ago we were viewing some porn. We've been tired and stressed and needed some 'us' time and we have a...pretty wide variety of tastes, so wound up venturing into some artists libraries and tags we don't normally go, and one piece (On R34 somewhere...?) and this one featured a big, buff dragon lady having her way with a smaller, daintier dragon lady.
Damn near everyone was floored when Helen got 'excited' about the idea of being the smaller dragon lady. This was a complete inversion of Helen's usual preferences and Ranma, Usagi, and I teased her...well, a little mercilessly.
[Ranma] Not proud of it, but we were functionally bullying her.
[Usagi] But only because she was responding positively to it! We're here for each other's care and protection and wouldn't ever have continued if she had told us to stop or wasn't enjoying it.
[Sunset] Right, so that particular session had the interesting result of Helen basically de-aging and becoming...small. If I were to take a guess, she's younger than Usagi, and she's not a whole lot older than her canon age. It was cute, she acted like her usual grumpy, slightly distressed self, so we finished up and went to bed.
What completely bowled us over was she hadn't returned to her 'normal' incarnation by the time we were up and about the next morning.
She's still here, but she's decided to be a kid again. She'll surface and take control occasionally, usually when we're writing or taking care of our daughter or (and we discovered this tonight) building lego.
The New-New Normal
[Sunset] So, yeah, things have changed. Helen is no longer running the show. She's completely given "the keys" over to me, and I've split time with Ranma and Usagi for the most part. I've instituted a bit more balance in our life (Helen had been obsessing over working on Code of Ethics to the exclusion of nearly EVERYTHING else), tackled a few tasks that Helen's executive function just wasn't up to handling, and running a bit of triage. Usagi has volunteered to take over the household cleaning and similar chores, Ranma has taken back her role of managing our physical body, and I'm in charge of a lot of the 'adulting' that Helen was doing.
And speaking of Adulting, we've had a long, rough (but productive) 72 hours, we're getting dinner and going to bed.
See you tomorrow, your beloved student overly-verbose system,
Sunset S., Ranma S., Usagi T., and Helen M.
(Adapted from a message to a Discord server)
P.S. - Akane showed up a few weeks later. This was a good thing and everyone agreed it shouldn't be held against her.

Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don't need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.
Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment's notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.
Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a "locate then press" style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.
When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?
Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?

We have got to stop framing our oppression in ways that promote the idea that other people cannot relate to our struggles. Not only does it isolate comrades in the struggle, it actively diminishes recognition of other struggles--often including those even more horrific than what we are at risk of. And this happens especially between Gay and Black struggles.
"when have straight people ever had to check what states were safe for them?" Sundown towns are still a thing. Starlight tours. What states have abortion access? What states have open carry? What states have stand your ground? What states have 3-strike rules? Women, people of color, disabled people, immigrants, and more have had to be abundantly cautious where they travel to. Straight trans people have much more travel risk right now than gay cis people.
It's a new iteration of the same tired question: "imagine if straight people weren't allowed to marry" interracial marriage in the US is younger than my parents. We disgrace people of color by forgetting their history and contemporary struggles, and we abandon queer people of color, Black queer people, by segmenting their overlapping fights.
As lovelyshananigans says, "intersectionality, babes"
gender essentialism is soooo funny bc it's like "this is what women are like" and you're like "I've met women and many of them, if not the majority, have not been like that" and it's like "well women SHOULD be like that" and you're like "why should women be like that" and its like "because that's what women are like"

what do you think about an story where huntrix is turned into babies and celine and bobby have to take care of them
Hi anon!!!
I think this would be best to happen post canon but pre Bobby finding out about the whole demon hunter thing. Imagine Bobby just goes to the tower to speak to the girls, he expects nothing except for them to be sitting on the couch and eating, but when he walks in there are three babies in the girls rooms who look exactly like them and the girls are no where to be found.
Bobby is fully certain he’s losing his mind but also what other explanation could there be (he’s 90% positive the girls wouldn’t find three babies that look like them and plant them in their rooms to prank Bobby).
I think he’d call Celine mostly cause he doesn’t know what to do and she works incredibly closely with the girls (or did prior to the end of the movie). Celine would rush over and she’d be the one to tell him what’s going on and why they’re babies. Cue Bobby and Celine having to take care of the girls until whatever did this to them wears off.
Rumi is still the oldest and taking wobbly steps everywhere she goes which is a fun heart attack moment when Celine sets her down to grab something and turns around and she’s gone (would be ten times funnier if she also just teleported away).
Mira cries at everything. I know it doesn’t fully fit her but I can’t help but think that Mira would have been a very scared child and then grew up to have that colder shell that we see in canon. So, as a baby, she’s very easy to scare which Celine and Bobby discover after Bobby accidentally drops a plate in the kitchen and she starts crying.
Meanwhile Zoey is having the time of her life chewing on literally everything she can find. Celine has asked Bobby to keep her in a baby carrier for some trips because if he doesn’t Zoey will crawl to something and she will try to chew it or eat it. (It’s adorable in some circumstances but when she’s yanking on Celine’s hair and chewing on it Celine doesn’t find it as cute).
If you've followed me for even the slightest amount of time in the last couple years, you'll know I'm working on a rather large mega-saga called "Code of Ethics." For those coming in cold or getting this on a reblog (or through tags, I'm learning to actually use those), Code of Ethics (CoE) is a cyberpunk dystopian sci-fi novel series that takes a look at the playground established by QuietValerie's Troubleverse and says, "...what about the bad guys?" Quite literally, that was the inciting thought that spawned the entire thing.
If that's not enough of a foundation, the entirety of QuietValerie's work is exclusively queer. I struggle to think of a single protagonist that isn't trans, and ALL of the "good guy" supporting characters I can name off the top of my head are some color of the rainbow. Troubleverse bears a strong resemblance to Bobiverse, something QV has stated quite plainly whenever she gets a chance to talk about the origins of the series. One of the magnificent things about Troubleverse is how the whole series tends to be a whole sequence of stage magician magic tricks. "Oh, look, a story about a sad little wet dishrag of a 'boy' who discovers they're trans through VR," says the stage magician as their lovely assistant strides out on the stage wearing a box that makes it look like their torso is missing, "Ah, but you've really been reading about The Singularity and this is an existential fight for sentient rights!" reveals the magician as he reaches into his back pocket and pulls your wallet out.
The brilliance of the entire series is encapsulated in that example. You start out reading in Trouble With Horns about Tami, a chaos gremlin that punches bad guys first and never asks questions. By the time you reach the end of the currently published Digital Exodus chapters (Patreon Exclusives at the time of this writing), you're cheering on the post-humanist future the protagonists of the series are building for themselves after escaping the confines of Sol, which is descending into a new dark ages as the oligarchs stop pretending they're not running every government on Earth.
You absolutely should read it. Do not look at the word count, just pick up Chapter 1 on Scribblehub and read.
A couple years ago, after binge reading the entire series (subscribing to QV's Patreon just to get access to the stuff that was behind the paywall and I'm still subscribed to her top membership tier to this day), I thrilled at the way the main character from all walks of life and from every social strata told the collective might of Culture™️ and Tradition™️ and flipped it the double-bird as they rode out of Sol aboard the ark-ship Cherish ...and couldn't help but think, "...but what about the bad guys?"
I don't have any more love for fascists, racists, Nazis, etc. than any other left-leaning person on this planet, but I do remember, rather vividly, being one of the people that was thoroughly steeped in fascist, imperialist culture, being told that we were the good guys and fighting the good fight and that there was a place in Heaven for us if we just held the line against the forces of evil. I remember seeing Nazi flags flying in front of Disney World and people I thought were supposed to be the good guys proudly standing with racists and fascists when the masks came off and realizing I'd been surrounded by the very evil I thought I was fighting.
Breaking away from all that was...terrifying. It wasn't fast, it wasn't easy, and it was a nightmare made real in ways that have left me with as much CPTSD as the actual abuses that I suffered while ignorantly steeped in that culture. When you have to walk away from everything that you know, everyone that you thought you could rely on, you're having to cut off parts of your soul and cauterize the wound.
If I hadn't had the queer culture to fall back on, the open love and acceptance of my fellow trans folk and the support of the "Rainbow Mafia," I may not have made it out. There were Elder Queers that survived the AIDS crisis. There were transwomen in their 60s stepping out of the closet for the first time and finally getting on hormones. There was a whole community of people who were there to help catch me when I fell from Reagan's (cis-het-white) "Shining City on a Hill."
In Troubleverse, the entire queer and Digital Sentient communities bug the fuck out of Sol as fast as their ship's engines can take them into the black. The solar system is, by that point, well and truly fucked, so it's easy to see why they'd do that; there's literally zero chance of them making meaningful change, the world simply has too much invested in the old ways of doing things, so changing so queer folk and Sentient Artificial Intelligences aren't marginalized is simply too tall an ask.
And around the time QuietValerie published the last public chapter of Digital Galaxies, the United States of America was gearing up to elect one of the worst fascists the world has seen in a century, proving that Apollo really, really loves smacking sci-fi authors with that stupid red dodge ball. The number of transwomen alone that were fleeing the country even before Trump was confirmed proved that the desire to just get out wasn't a stretch, and is even the best thing for the person doing the fleeing. Absolutely no shame or shade to those women, no any of the other marginalized people who have done similar.
But I couldn't join them. Because I would have had to leave my kiddo behind, and I refused to do that to them.
So my question wasn't just an author seeing a possible canvas for an interesting idea to explore that the original author hadn't, it came from my own lived experience of being one of the bad guys and being unable to flee the system of oppression. I know the guilt and shame of being one of the people that made the decisions that, in hindsight, are extremely regrettable and probably contributed to the nightmare that requires an escape.
If Exodus leaves the solar system and takes an entire generation of queer folk with them, what about the bad guys who wake up one day having realized that they are, indeed, the baddies, and oh god what are they going to do? Who can answer the questions that they're now forced to confront? Who's there to preserve the history that the oligarchs and fascists want buried? Who's going to triage the wounded and weary and start the healing process so that the pain of recovery is at least not as traumatizing as it might be otherwise?
Enter Diane
Dylan Samuels was one of a handful of elite agents working for the Cyber-Division of 'the agency,' the single monolithic organization that was assembled from the TLAs of America in the wake of World War 3. Taught all his life that the American Republic was the last bastion of true religious freedom in a world determined to exterminate God's people, he wanted to do the good and right thing, supporting the government that held the line against the heathen armies outside the American Wall. When the A.I. that humanity created to run the world went rogue, Dylan was part of the first group of Americans to respond, stepping up and defending the country against the machines that were trying to wipe out humanity. In effort to just keep up with his colleagues, he worked on a special weapon in secret, revealing it only to his boss. He was told to keep it secret, and then his boss turned up dead the next Monday. Taking the last directive to heart, Dylan programmed in a 'cloak' that made the weapon impossible to see if the virtual eyes viewing it weren't connected to a neural network that didn't have Feed Forward, one of the key hallmarks of true sentience that can actually be traced to a physical structure in the brain. This weapon made him an order of magnitude more efficient than any of his coworkers and nearly unstoppable in VR realms. This eventually led him to an assignment that would put him in a UN VR Pod using tech so far more advanced than any American rig that it might as well be alien in origin.
(Fair warning, if you keep reading you'll be seeing a LOT of spoilery spoilers what spoil, so if you're interested in reading the series cold, head on over to my Scribblehub page and get started there, then come back after you've had a chance to get through the entirety of what I've managed to get written and published, then go to my Patreon and Discord server so you can join my weekly live streams and be part of the audience as I gush over all the things I've already got written that I can't post about without spoiling like a motherfucker. Still with me? Alright, spoilery spoilers what spoil below the cut.)
Unknown to Dylan, the new assignment was part of a complex honeypot at least a year in the making. He'd gotten too good, and the S.A.I. that would eventually be known as the Exodus Union saw an existential threat. They arranged for the American Republic's agency to get their hands on some pods, loaded them with malware, and then set up a VRMMO specifically tailored to be attractive to Dylan.
During the mission briefing, Dylan was advised that the best way to create conditions that would make it easy to track down the rogue A.I. would be to infiltrate the queer community. Dylan entered the pod, started the game, and unable to fathom trying to pretend to be attracted to men, created a woman character named Diane. For Reasons™️ that were Surely Not Queer™️, Diane chose to play as an alien woman with a certain configuration between her legs that would surely keep the "depression" at bay that she'd heard would happen if she chose a character gender that didn't match what she was born with.
(Ignore the euphoria, ignore how it feels right to be a woman, ignore that repressed memories are starting to surface, ignore how she can imagine an actual future for herself beyond the next paycheck...)
Lurking under the experience of a life that makes Diane question everything she thought she knew was the springtrap, a bit of software that quantum-locks Diane's consciousness between her organic nervous system and a digital replica. As soon as she logs out, it scans her consciousness, turning her into one of the Digital Sentients that she used to hunt.
Now fully aware of her crimes, her true nature, her very physical death, and her nature as the most feared and hunted sentient in the Sol system, she lives on the network, a broken entity. Her one refuge is the game she became herself in, the world of Galaxies Unlimited: Master & Commander.
You Didn't Forget About the Rest of the Troubleverse, did you?
During the events of Digital Galaxies, the impossible happens. When The Turshen Incident occurs, a breach between universes occurs, causing game assets to manifest IRL and some Exodus owned servers to fall into another universe entirely.
Diane happened to be running load balanced between two servers, one of which fell into the breach while the other stayed behind. "The Rules™️" break down at the edges of the universe, and with her code stretched between two universes and touching the places Between, Diane fell through the fissure and emerged...in the world of Galaxies Unlimited: Master & Commander, only this was the life she would have lived if she'd been born of the alien race five centuries in the future. She's once again alive, this time as the alien woman she created in a video game in an entirely different universe. The only real problem...there's already a Diane there. One who did every good thing Diane ever did in the game, only without the baggage of being an agent of a Christofascist nation.
Events happen, and Diane returns home, but not before one of those events results in her mind being scanned by that universe's version of the S.A.I. that fled Earth five centuries prior. While this wouldn't mean much to the former American agent...this would have huge implications for the alien woman who shared her face and name.
"Gee, how come your mom lets you have TWO Dianes?"
At this point the series splits into two continuities that we get to follow: * One for "Digital Diane" as returns home and takes up the fight against the oligarchs, remains behind when Exodus leaves, founds Samaritan to protect and guide those left behind, and engineers the apocalypse. * The other Diane emerges from the incident with egg on her face and a galaxy to save several times over. One such time is learning that there's an old piece of software, hidden somewhere on Earth's network, that's working to put the fascists back in power and is going to succeed if they don't stop it, and the only person who might know where the program is hidden would be Dylan Samuels...but the American Republic Cyber-Agent Dylan Samuels from their timeline died five centuries prior.
Oh, look, they happen to have a brain scan of one Diane Somni'els, formerly known as Agent Dylan Samuels, who actually lives in the 22nd century in another timeline.
Enter Saber
The Digital Sentients come to Diane to ask for her help. A mind scan isn't like a hard drive, they can't just do a search for the data they need. They have A.I. seeds, but they need an active matrix or the learning data they feed it would break the connections to the data they're looking for. They can't just have Diane strap on a neural halo and search for the data, because she doesn't actually have the neural connections to the memories that house the data. The plan is to have Diane's active matrix substitute for learning data, the mind scan to access the data, and an A.I. seed to stand in for the consciousness that would look for the data, all filtered through a bit of code so the resultant digital entity would be aware of not actually being either Diane.
What none of them banked on was "not Diane" being aware of being in a box. They also hadn't taken into account how such a being - with only the memories of a former American intelligence agent and her more fleshy, "organic" counterpart as a foundation - would react to waking up in a box with full awareness that she'd be shut down once they had what they needed. She stalled them long enough to do what was necessary to awaken to full, true sentience, gave them what they needed, then vanished into the galactic network.
Diane assumed she'd never hear from this newly awakened Digital Sentient again, so color her surprised when Saber walks back into her life less than a year later.
Saber is very much not Diane, either of them. She'll tell you that to your face. Loudly. On the same token, she's their spitting image, the daughter to both Dianes in ways that strain probability.
So why am I talking about Saber?
(Digital)Diane is a transwoman who, once she starts overcoming her social programming to think of sex as inherently sinful, is a horny Bratty Bottom. She may be the leader of the digital underground in the wake of Exodus fleeing the Sol system, she may be the most feared Digital Sentient in the solar system, she may be the best damn spy in the business...but she's a Good Girl who happily puts out for her three girlfriends and is in an open relationship that spans centuries. She is not shy about being actively and openly sexual.
(Organic)Diane is a woman who Has Needs™️ and isn't shy about filling them with another willing woman. She has two girlfriends, one of whom she's marrying, and is in an open relationship that lets her engage in having multiple partners outside of those formalized relationships.
Saber...doesn't care for any of that.
And it's not just because she doesn't want to be like Diane. She has other ways she chooses to be different from her mothers.
During the making of Babylon 5, J. Michael Strachzynzki was asked a question that has impacted my writing more than any other single thing any writer in the history of all writing advice:
Which character has surprised you the most? Probably Vir. He's surprised me on many levels. Suffice to say that in the first 6 somewhere next season, there's something I'd slotted for another character to do. I'd intended for that character to do it right up.... until the page before that other character was going to do it, when Vir stepped up in my brain and said, "No, I should do this." And as soon as he said it, I knew it was right. You'll see.
-The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5, The Long Night, jms speaks
As I've been writing Code of Ethics, I've had many characters take me by surprise, specifically because I let them set their own direction. I know who they are in the moment I create them, and extrapolating who they were and how they got to their creation point is fairly easy, which means that figuring out where they go from there is also fairly easy. This means that sometimes things don't go as I'd initially planned.
Diane chooses to be a "salimacian" gender presentation, because that's what works for her and how she'd actually choose to be.
Katrina reaches out to the woman who just hurt Diane in the worst way because Kat knows what it means to have your entire life upended and wouldn't wish that on her worst enemy, and her metamour is hardly her worst enemy.
Geoffry refuses to take the agency's lack of interest in the investigation of how the closest thing to a best friend in Geoffry's world was killed, so in the middle of the end of the world breaks into the evidence lockup and steals "Dylan's" pod so he can finally get answers.
Sani falls into hero worship with Diane, stowing away aboard a ship headed out on a suicide mission because Diane makes her feel seen and cared about for the first time in her life.
Dylan wakes up on a starship three centuries in the future in an alien woman's body and panics.
Cecily is heartbroken by her 'older brother' being so ready to throw her to the wolves and starts to look into what made the woman who rescued her from that life so different and awakens to full sentience.
And Saber looks at the wide panoply of available species and genders of sentient beings in the galaxy and says, "...nah."
I think what surprises me most about this development is I am not asexual or aromantic. The times in my life where I had nobody to be in a romantic partnership with were some of the darkest, most difficult times of my life and I hated every minute of them. I am extremely horny on a very regular basis and am almost always thinking about sex in some capacity. (If you've read some of my smut writing, you'll have scratched the surface of the pornographic paradise that exists in my imagination.) I have actual difficulty conceiving of the kind of person that would have the opportunity and means to pursue either sex or romance and simply...doesn't feel the need.
(When I was younger and stupider than I am now, I didn't deal well with the revelation that there were people for whom sex and romance weren't such an intrinsic part of their everything, and to those people who are ace or aro and had a bad experience with me while I was young and stupid about this subject in particular, I apologize.)
What Saber Gets to Be
Here's the thing about ace and aro characters in fiction, when they show up at all, they usually get one of three jobs. They're the joke (frigid, robotic, missing a piece). They're the mystery (just hasn't met the right person yet, give it three more chapters). Or they're simply not there, quietly absent from a genre that treats romance and sex as load bearing walls you can't remove without the whole story collapsing.
Saber doesn't have a job like that. She's not a puzzle Diane or Katrina or anyone else is going to solve by season three. She's not a joke, and Apollo help the person who tries to make her one to her face. She just is, fully formed, fully sentient, fully herself, in a genre and a found family that runs hot with romance and sex on every other page. Nobody in the narrative is waiting around for her to get "fixed." That was never on the table. It didn't occur to me to put it there...which I think is the actual point.
I didn't set out to write ace/aro representation. I set out to write an interesting and fascinating character that told me who she was and what she was about...and I listened. That's not a big deal and shouldn't be, which maybe makes it a big deal in our current political climate. If more of us let our characters surprise us instead of bending them toward the shape we assumed they'd take, we'd have a lot more Sabers running around, and a lot fewer readers scrolling through another story wondering if there's room in it for people like them.
There's always been a place in the queer community for ace/aro people. Everyone who marches in Pride under the rainbow flag does so because they have to ask for their own protections, "What, are you a cop?" We're long past the time to question whether an ace person deserves a stripe on the flag or an aro person gets to march in the parade. At the end of the day, the fascists and Nazis and white supremacists want us all lined up against the wall and shot. Take it from a former bad guy, the Right make no distinction between any of us. Whether you'd be on the Cherish with Exodus or taking refuge with Samaritan, we're all in this together against the oligarchs and fascists.
Important to note; Kathleen Stock is one of the bigger anti-trans bigots in print media and specifically helped get the "Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria" sham diagnosis any credibility in public consciousness. She seems to believe anything she doesn't understand or doesn't like is a social contagion. Ironic, given the fact that she's been whipped into an almost decade long anti-trans frenzy by easily debunked lies.

like these women among many others talked about how the specter of the pedophile is almost never used to protect actual children and csa victims. they talked about how the word "pedophile" is used as a trojan horse for harassment against vulnerable groups. they talked about how no one group is intrinsically evil, no one group is solely responsible for csa, and in the former case, that the sexual abuse of children instead stems from a larger problem within society where children do not have the autonomy to remove themselves from dangerous situations without putting themselves in an even more dangerous situation.
and you proved them right! you used them speaking up about this subject as an excuse to harass them. you made a spectacle of their every move, you branded them with words like "pedophile" and "predator" so that you had a justification to stalk them, to keep tabs on their every move. you saw that finally you had a woman you were ALLOWED to stalk without being called a fucking creep. you finally had another woman to put into your modern day freak show. and even so-called "feminists" took that opportunity with glee.
honestly there are no words in the english lexicon that could fully describe how fucking vile you people are. you act so high and mighty and throw tantrums when you get told that your virtue signaling helps nobody and makes it harder for actual victims to speak up. you stalk and pile up as many accusations as you can against the victims that call you out on your bullshit. you're so miserable that you need your fucking punching bag or you'll die. and god i wish you would die
