seeking advice!
I’m currently workshopping a plot idea and I had a question I’m hoping I could get some guidance on: I want to do something inspired by Slavic folk lore (a part of my cultural heritage) that’s set in the modern day, maybe a bit like Shadowhunters? I want to introduce a sort of supernatural conflict between old vs new world beliefs, like the Slavic struggle of Christianity vs paganism. The story would involve these myths and legends being real, like a sort of “hidden world”. This led me to wonder, though, how I should handle an ethnically diverse cast of characters. I have in my mind the main female character being Indian, but I’m curious if there are any unsavory implications there given that India has its own rich religious and mythological traditions, and instead she’s jumping on the Slav-train, basically. I don’t want it to seem as though she’s maybe denying her own cultural beliefs and practices, but I also don’t want to have a completely white cast in an effort to not whitewash characters
TLDR; is it okay to write an Indian character into a story based on Eastern European/white folk lore, or does that strip away her cultural identity?
I need a new book written by John Green.
