preference - how you first meet [party edition]
“this dj sucks,” you exclaimed to no one in particular, rolling your eyes as the dj played yet another stupid song. you’d come to the party to dance and have a good time, not stand around as he fidgeted with his soundboard and played wack ass techno songs from the mid 90s. now, you loved a good 90s song, but there were only so many times you could dance to “what is love” and “rhythm is a dancer” and whatever random boy band shit was playing. huffing, you told your friend to hold your drink as you made your way toward where the dj stood.
“hey four eyes!” you yelled, smirking as he looked over at you with a raised eyebrow. “you mind playing something from this century?”you walked over towards his booth and eyed him as he shuffled around, obviously not knowing exactly what he was doing. “have you even used a soundboard before?”
most guys found your blunt nature a big turn off and would often act like you didn’t know what you were talking about, but this guy didn’t seem like that at all.
he scratched the back of his neck and bit his bottom lip. “this is my first time.”
smirking, you reached your arm out and ruffled his hair. “aww, a virgin. don’t worry, four eyes, i’m gonna help you out here.”
you had just turned 19 and your best friends decided to throw you a huge birthday party. you were quite nervous, if you were honest; in your whole 19 years on the planet, you’d never had a birthday party before… but you weren’t about to tell your best friends that.
the night of the party arrived and you walked out of your apartment in a skin tight red dress, red heels, and decided to actually style your curls for once. driving over to your best friend’s place, you tried to hype yourself up as you listened to your favorite party songs. the drive was quick and you entered your best friend’s place, setting down your purse in a storage cabinet she had nearby.
you called out for your best friend, but instead was met with a man with dyed grey hair. he wasn’t much taller than you, but he looked fairly built.
“um, who are you?” you asked, backing yourself against the door just in case he turned out to be an intruder.
“i’m edwin, y/b/f/n’s (your best friend’s name) cousin. she’s in the shower. are you the birthday girl?”
you shyly nodded and bit your bottom lip. “yeah…”
you didn’t want to go to the party in the first place, but your best friend told you it’d be good to get out of the dorms and meet people for once. you weren’t wearing anything fancy - just a pair of black skinny jeans, an oversized white and black striped sweater, and your beat up pair of vans. when you got to the party, your best friend went to get drinks for you two, but soon you noticed she was chatting with some random guy. so, you settled down in a quiet part of the room and pulled a book out of your purse - you always came prepared! you weren’t sure how much time had passed, but you soon heard a man’s voice.
“excuse me, uh… is this seat taken?”
you looked up from your book and saw the most beautiful man you’d ever laid eyes on. shoulder length blonde hair, brown eyes, and a goofy smile that lit up his face and only made the blush on his cheeks grow more red.
“no, no, go ahead,” you said, blushing, as you scooted over a little and made room for him on the couch.
“thanks,” goofy grin replied, and sat next to you. holding his hand out, he couldn’t help but get lost in your eyes. “i’m austin.”
you were more than a little buzzed, and enjoying yourself to the fullest. with a cup of beer in one hand and your other hand waving around, you swayed to the music as your best friend danced around you. you didn’t want to admit you’d never been to a party, so after a few drinks you decided to copy what everyone else was doing. but now you were drunk.
as the song changed, you excused yourself and walked towards the table where the food was. you had your eye on the last sandwich on the tray and were determined to make it yours. however, it seemed someone else had the same goal in mind. as you reached your hand out to grab it, you instead grabbed onto another hand.
“um, this is my sandwich,” you slurred, as you looked up to meet a pair of brown eyes. “you have pretty eyes, mister.”
the man, seemingly amused by your intoxicated state, pulled his hand back and gestured towards it. “you can have it.”
you picked up the sandwich and held it up to him. “if you gotta mouth, i’d be willing to share.”
he grinned and soon began to laugh. “how many drinks have you had?”
shrugging, you swayed a little to the music and held up your other hand, as if you were counting. “i think four. yeah, four.”
“i don’t think you should drink anymore.” he grabbed your hand and pulled you towards an open couch, sitting you down and taking your cup away from you.
you patted the spot next to you as you looked up at him. “sit with me. i can’t finish this sandwich on my own.”
“that sandwich will be gone after two bites.” he laughed, sitting down next to you.
“then have one bite.” you said, holding out the sandwich towards him.
“take that, you fuckers!” you threw your hands in the air as you pocketed the 8-ball. the guy you were playing shook his head as he begrudgingly handed over another $10 bill.
“how the hell are you so good?” another guy asked.
you shrugged your shoulders, not wanting to be cocky, but in reality you were just good with geometry; after all, pool was all angles. “just luck, i guess.” you batted your lashes at him and watched as he picked up the pool cue.
“you up for another round?” he asked.
you bit your bottom lip and finally got a good look at him. he was gorgeous, with brown eyes (though it was hard to tell since he was squinting) and dyed blonde dreads. he was tall, too - like a fucking tree! shrugging your shoulders, you tried to act like you hadn’t just been checking him out and decided what the hell. might as well pocket another $10.
“okay, but if i win, you owe me $10.”
“that’s fair,” he said, setting up the balls. “if i win, how about you go on a date with me?”
scrunching up your nose, you played off the uninterested look. “i dunno, are you really worth it?”
he laughed, and it was almost as if it brightened up the room. then he quickly grew serious and nodded, his dreads flopping down into his line of vision. “oh yeah.”
“deal,” you said, smiling your cocky grin. “get ready to lose.”
