“Of course I have,” Jin said. He fidgeted, not sure whether he should go through with it or not. This could make or break them. If he said no, things could’ve gone back to normal but ran the risk of destroying their relationship entirely. If he said yes, things would change drastically with no guarantee it would work out in the end. These were big decisions, and ones they’d only floated around before. Now it was serious. 

Jin had already slept on his answer for two days. He had finally texted Phillip that he was ready, but wanted to see him in person. This had to be done face to face. A proposal like this wasn’t something he could discuss without Phillip right beside him.

Jin wrapped his arms tight around Phillip’s waist to give him a big, long hug. He kissed his chest, the height difference making it too hard to peck Phillip on the lips like he had wanted to. 

“I… I love you, Phillip. I still had to think about this for a bit, and I’m sorry about that. I just want to make sure I’m making the right choice for both of us. But I know what I want now. So to answer your question…”

With a bit of a struggle Jin stood on his tip toes and pressed his lips to Phillip’s. He ran his fingers through the other’s dark, thick locks of hair as his free hand gently pressed on Phillip’s shoulder to try and make him lean down and close the gap between them. Phillip was always so warm; he was like a familiar blanket, so comforting and familiar that some nights he just couldn’t sleep without him there. Even though he didn’t want to, Jin had to pull back out of their kiss. To make Phillip wait any longer for an answer would just be cruel.

“You say that like you’ve done it before,” Jin snapped back. There were times when loving Phillip was downright exhausting. He knew that it wasn’t easy for the other to come to terms with his shifting sense of identity, but that didn’t mean Jin always felt like putting up with his boyfriend’s dramatic outbursts. He folded his arms over his chest as if to shield his heart from any more blows. He didn’t want to let Phillip see just how much that stung.

His brow furrowed his lips pushed into a scowl. This wasn’t their first argument but he certainly hoped it wouldn’t be their last as a couple; despite Phillip’s defensive demeanor Jin loved him. He didn’t want to lose him. Their relationship was far from perfect, but so were they. When things were good they were great, and lately it had seemed like Phillip was making progress on himself  — until that afternoon, that is. 

“I’m not asking you to parade me around, I just want you to stop acting like you’re ashamed to be with me! You didn’t even lie about having a girlfriend, you told them you were single, as if I don’t even exist, like we don’t live together! I’m sick of being treated like some sort of secret retreat where you go to find yourself and leave when you feel satisfied! You pull me close when it’s convenient for you and push me away when it isn’t.”

Jin sighed heavily. He was damn near panting with how much energy was rushing through him. Every little thing that was bothering him was rising to the surface. He could feel his words threatening to bubble over in his growing anger. Fighting with Phillip was like talking to an immature brick wall. He avoided eye contact, his gaze darting around the room to look everywhere but at his partner. 

“You know, sometimes I think the only reason you call me your boyfriend is to keep me from being with someone else. You say you love me when we’re together, but I wonder if I’ll ever be more important to you than your goddamned ego  —  But I stay because I love you, Phillip! I really, truly love you even though it makes no sense sometimes!”

Tears started to creep out of the corners of Jin’s eyes. That familiar tingling sensation told him more were coming but he just couldn’t help it. He turned away from Phillip slightly, just enough to be able to still glance over at him without having to face him. He didn’t want to cry in front of him. To cry would be to admit defeat, even if it was involuntary.
