rewatching the pilot and I love that Sam has this deep understanding and empathy for people even people who are “flawed”. The conversation with Constance’s husband is really special in showcasing this early on, Sam pushes in a gentle but firm manner having drawn the conclusion himself of his infidelity and the murder of the children, but there’s no actual judgement or condemnation for either of their actions. Merely a deep understanding and need to clarify so he appropriately resolve everything. Even when Constance’s husband becomes angry all Sam showcases is sadness for them.

it’s this empathy for flawed people that really separates Sam from Dean I think. Sam who’s developed his own guilty conscience and self loathing from an early age resonates with not just “good” people but these characters as well. Whereas with Dean there is a distinct superiority in his sympathy (as Dean struggles with empathy I believe) even in characters he “relates” to. it’s not even a bad thing I think it’s simply a Dean who was placed in such a specific role that in his mind simply no one can comprehend the burden he was forced to bear which inadvertently causes a wall between him and everyone around him.

Sam has a wall too, the only difference is his is transparent. Dean and everyone who gravitates towards him are simply blind.
