Fixie bike
This summer I bought a fixie bike.
When I was deciding what kind of a bicycle to get after the last one - a proper mountain bike - was stolen, I came across many people explaining benefits of fixies. They all tried to convey a difficult to believe message, that riding a fixie is almost a mystical experience. I was sceptical.
The feeling you get from riding a fixie is pure joy. That's what I found out almost immediately. It took me a while to understand why. The reason is simplicity. You only have one gear so there is no need to think about shifting gears. And you always have to pedal, so there is no need to think about that, either. These two things seem like minor nuisances. But they are not minor. They detract you from really enjoying the ride. Now that you can forget that you are riding a bicycle and focus more on the actual experience. The wind in your hair. The pleasure of movement. Speed.
Fixies seemingly limit your options but simultaneously enhance your experience. Sometimes less is more.
