Post Internet Art

Came across some obstacles such as the cords not reaching. So I had to centre the laptop so that i could plug a charger in one of it’s USB ports in order to reach the Ipad. But I quite enjoyed this install and playing with different screens and devices. All of them are different and range from different years and brands. It worked out well and I am very happy with the end result. 

As a digital photography student there has always been challenges and controversy in the art industry regarding the digital photographic medium being ‘real art’ or a real fine art form. With the expansion and progression of the internet, but most significantly social media platforms such as Instagram, the debate keeps getting more convoluted. In this modern era anyone with a phone and an Instagram account can call themselves a ‘photographer’ posting their images and videos instantly to their followers and the viral social internet sphere. My concept relies on creating a conversation between tangible art and art presented on screen and which is more valid but really they are equal. My goal with this install is to just lay it all out. 3 digital collage prints, beside 3 different screens and platforms from which the collages were created with.

Printing was more challenging than expected due to the low resolution screen shots. I originally wanted the prints to be larger but I couldn’t help being restricted. In the end the size worked out great because the prints and the screen sizes were more a like which brings an even stronger correlation to the prints and digital images

My only concern with the installation are access to plinths and keeping the batteries of the devices alive.

Through photoshop I focused on the levels, brightness and contrast, exposure, sharpening and playing around with a cast over the collage to make the image more cohesive.

I prefer the first filter I placed on the collage by tapping the smiley face symbol on snapchat. I think the warm filter goes better with the image than the cool one.

I genuinely like the last edit! It is super surreal and really looks like a cut and paste edit which is what I am going for! I love how the flower petals and leafs are placed over the toilet bowl and the stem positioning. All I need to do now is sharpen it in photoshop and perhaps make a few more adjustments.

I am planning to further edit my snapchat collages on photoshop to make them cohesive and to add sharpness to some areas.

The first collage i edited using photoshop didn’t have the vibe I was going for so i thought it would be interesting to put the image into a phone app; Snapchat. Snapchat has heaps of cool editingand photoshop features. I played around with some and liked these two for the image the most! The spiral effect makes the scene feel like you’re slipping into a dream. And the second effect really makes it look like the sky is affecting the colour of the room. Both are super surreal which is exactly what I’m going for!

Tapping the smiley face symbol will bring up more filters to the right of your screen but these filters are not as heavy and have more colour changing effects rather than style effects.

After editing my first collage using photos taken with my Canon1200D i thought that the collage wasn’t looking the way I imagined! I wanted a more surreal/cut and paste feel and then I thought of Snapchat. Snapchat has come a long way. Its one of the biggest social media platforms and has so many different and unique tools and filters. I am now planning to use snapchat to play around with filters and use their cut and paste tool to make collages.

Finally I played around with photo filters so that the room looked more blue and cold and that the sky is effecting the light and colour of the room.

Using my Canon 1200D I just took photos of around my house. I wanted to capture everything from textures to full settings so Id have a lot of options when putting a scene together for editing
