Alfie's not sure what a good freshman or otherwise performance would look like but he imagined it had to have been better than the contrived showing he had just witnessed.

Porter snorts softly at his agreement, eyes flicking over but not fully raising her graze at him as if direct eye contact would bring too many questions that she can't say she's in the mood to answer.
"No," she answers with a scorning breath, her brows furrowing.
"And that's exactly why I'm not stupid enough to go up there. You can't expect to go up on a stage with drivel and not be met with some kind of critque."

Wes returned from the bar with a fresh pitcher of beer for the group, holding it up and ready to refill anyone's glasses who needed so, after his own. "Beer?"
Just the color of the beverage made Porter's nose turn up on reflex, giving a subtle shake of her head to denote displeasure.
"Do they have red wine in this place or is that gonna be too much to ask?"
Alice smiled softly. She picked up another pair, with emeralds on it. "Something like this?" she asked, comparing the two. "It is very pretty. And it would also go with the jade that I have sitting in my jewelry box as well," she said.
"Mmhm," Porter nodded in approval as she evaluated the earrings.
Her mother had always been very particular about her jewelry -- never wanted anyone to accuse her of wearing something fake or cheap looking.
Thinking on it now, Porter wondered how many diamond earrings and tennis braclets had been bought with dirty money.
And where were they all now?
"Not enough people wear emeralds. They're very striking. You'll definitely be complimented."

"I'm not laughing," Alfie assures the pair of eyes that met his as he turned his head to cover that he was doing exactly that, trying to get himself together and find a modicum of good behavior after being tickled by the poem he had just heard being recited aloud, "It is a bit funny though."
"Of course you're laughing, it was contrived," Porter mumbles from two empty stools over, not looking up from her phone that rested on the bartop. The New York Times had just just published a profile on her father and she had read the first paragraph over six times -- yet to decide whether or not she would dare to read further.
"It's like a bad freshmen theatre performance."
