This is a brilliant observation. Especially when you look at it one level out: Iroh supported Zuko in his search for the avatar because he recognized what whether that search was correct or not, Zuko had to take the journey. It is only when the Avatar is revealed to be real that Iroh has to change his plan to rehabilitate his son nephew because there is a greater good and Iroh values that.
Zuko does the same for Katara. He doesn’t judge her, he doesn’t place the weight of his expectations on her. He merely allows her to take the journey she must take.
And even their conclusions are the same. Zuko had to go through it all, had to complete the journey, to finally do the right thing. And Katara needed to complete that journey to finally release her hate and blame and grief - or rather to allow them to flow out of her instead of building up inside like a poison. Zuko had to be banished and had to face the truth of his father. Katara had to hunt Yon Rha and had to see him for the coward he truly was (and incidentally the fear at the heart of the Fire Nation’s actions).
I think part of the reason that the episode hangs together so well is that we see and know the journey Katara is taking because we have seen Zuko’s journey in full. We know that they are kindred in that way. It’s a beautiful symmetry.
Thought this might help others who struggle when writing. I know I get in my head too much.

nobody's son, nobody's daughter (ongoing) - Katara is captured after the Avatar falls at Ba Sing Se. Somehow Zuko never imagined this - the Avatar suspected dead, and the waterbender rotting in a Fire Nation prison. He needs to keep her protected from his sister and his father. He doesn't examine this impulse too closely. For @zutaraweek 2026.
