Oh, it's an IDWG1 comics thing!!

More specifically, it's a surgical punishment in More Than Meets The Eye and Lost Light, in where before the war the corrupt government would sentence bots to have their faces & hands removed and replaced with simple heads with only one eye & claws/pincers (see the main examples: Shockwave and Whirl)

It was considered a punishment for the worst of the worst criminals, but of course we only ever see it being used when it comes to bots who go against Functionism so it's pretty clear it was used mostly to uphold a corrupt system and weaponize the public against the victims.

It's named for the latin verb / punishment of amputare, which was the historical practice of cutting people's hands off to show they had broken the law (I've usually heard it in connection to thievery but it probably applied to more things)

Considering that the chapter I'm currently writing would be a major spoiler, here are just over 3 sentences from the chapter I'm currently revising and translating:

“Don’t hold back your tears,” she said finally. Her voice was low, almost a whisper, but in that silence it reverberated like the ringing of a bell.

Valarr didn’t answer. He didn’t even move.

Lyn breathed deeply.

“Don’t hold back your pain and your tears. You’ll need to be there for your mother and your brother, but you won’t be able to be strong if you keep everything to yourself,” she spoke slowly, choosing her words carefully. “You’re expected to be their anchor, but it’s impossible to support others when you’re abandoning yourself inside.”

The prince’s fingers, resting lightly on Sky's fur, twitched slightly.

“You can cry here,” her voice trembled. “No one will say anything. It’s just us here.”

The silence stretched on.

Valarr didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Didn’t cry.

Lyn waited.

Then, slowly, Valarr turned his face and, finally, he looked at her.

Being supportive of binary people is relatively simple, they have decided to sort themselves into one of the boxes that we have lots of experience interacting with. Being supportive of nonbinary people can be comparatively tricky, because you have to resist the urge to create box C and drop them all there. That's how we end up with various prejudices like "woman lite". Humans really, really like to categorize things. It helps us think. Unfortunately, sometimes it helps us think wrong.

You do not need convincing.

You need conviction.

There is still time. But this is a double-edged sword. One day the urgency will catch up with you and eat you from the inside out.
