pls dont take this too seriously, im only half-joking. im just a firm believer that wheatley isnt a moron <3
ok lemme confess something⌠its kind of full serious. except maybe the court thing sjbsdn i just meant that I dont wanna start fights with or offend anyone that isnt on the same page as me. i just wanted to make a funny meme about something i wholeheartedly believe in (that wheatley isnt stupid and its disrespectful to call him that). i just, i mean its so obvious that he finds it really hurtful to be called stupid, so i dont get why youd call him that âlovingly.â he doesnt find it funny or endearing, just hurtful. but thats my opinion and my half-serious note was more of a disclaimer, because I dont want to start a fight with someone abt it hcjc
or which part didnt u agree with? djsbx
oh yeah the part with the lawyer and court (the very last parts) are the things i dont agree with (and yeah i know its a joke) but everything else is perfect
also this:
âi just, i mean its so obvious that he finds it really hurtful to be called stupid, so i dont get why youd call him that âlovingly.â he doesnt find it funny or endearing, just hurtful.â
so true, i see people who like him/are fans of him call him that âlovinglyâ or in an âendearing wayâ. (and i see this in fics too where his friend or whoevers shipped with him in the story does this and for me thats justâŚ. jhjhdbsdh)
and yeah nothing wrong with that, they can do what they want, im not gonna start a fight/tell them to not do that plus its just a fictional character from a video game BUT youre soo right, it definitely wouldnt be affectionate or funny to him
i mean thats what the scientist (and other people -even other robots probably) have called him for so long bc of what they made him to be (which he cant control and he didnt have a say in) and he clearly does not like it and made him feel reaallyyy bad/hurt him a lot -i mean look at his reaction to being called a maroon in the betrayal scene.
he clearly wants to move on from it and leave behind his purpose as an IDS in the past and be something else, start a new life and choose his own path (which is related to what i said about him being an active character who moves the story forward despite being a limbless robot), heck he even gave himself a new name. and notice how he never really talks about himself and about his past.
and this:
âbut because hes goofy funny and not cool calculated he gets reduced to a maroon core.â
exactly, i agree although i had another thought
like i notice with the fandom, when it comes to the bad things wheatley did, he gets heavily criticized and gets a lot of hate/slander. but with characters who also did bad things (a lot more bad things that are also worse than what he did) like glados and cave, its either excused/not brought up a lot or they get more love for it because they were very funny and sacastic when they were doing the bad things. so its like:
wheatley does something bad = hate/slander and constant criticism
other characters do something bad = its okay bc they were funny when they did the bad thing and we love them for it (and dont get me wrong, im like this too, i love cave and glados but WHY is wheatley the only one who gets sht on)
also, relative to that, the âtalking about wheatley in a positive way and talking about his good qualities or how sad his character and story is without mentioning his bad qualities/bad things he did = excusing himâ really annoys me. just bc a post focuses on what the op likes about him/his good sides (or his backstory/how he wasnt treated well/just the sad stuff about him and his bad experiences, and how it affected him and shaped him as a person) doesnt mean theyre excusing him and ignoring the shitty things he did. its just that people are more likely to talk about the good things they love about something/someone they love.
okay crap this turned into a rant sorry, ill get back to the actual post.
âWheatley was a better ally and a better villain than Glados. he outsmarts her many timesâ
op, youll probably like this and this (the second one is actually about the âwheat is also very determined and is tenacious in his own wayâ since you seemed to like it last time) so if you havent read them yet then do bc theyre related to what you said.
i was going to write more about how even glados, in the end, finds out/realizes and acknowledges that wheatley, despite being built to be the IDS, is pretty smart/has good plans and gives him recognition, but this is already getting very long. although if you want me to elaborate on it i will.
Yeah about the endearingly calling him stupid thing: I see it a lot in fics and the fandom too and yeah, ppl can do what they want, but its not something I personally agree with or understand and it just makes me like sad/upset for wheatley jkgfdfksg its the reason i made this meme to begin with i guess jdfsk just to get my two cents out there in meme format
Yeah I think everyone in his life probably called him a moron and shunned him, everyone, i mean hes not friends with any of the robots in aperture, but then again i dont think anyone made friends down there. its kind of just, laws of the jungle, ur on ur own, use any means possible to survive the tyranny of glados, caring is a weakness in a place you can die so easily. I can just imagine, because he is the intelligence dampening sphere, ppl/cores probably jokingly or half-seriously treated him as if he had the cooties or something. That theyd get infected with stupidity if they hung around him. which is. really sad to think about. and maybe that developed from a joke to just a full on fact for them. âdont go near that wheatley core, i heard his stupidity is contagious.â :(
So yeah, I can really understand that heâd want to distance himself from his cruel designation and start anew. I think thats why he tries to seem smart to chell, to the point that he clearly overdoes it and makes his efforts counter-productive to his goal. Because he doesnât want chell to shun him and laugh at him like everyone else did. I think thats why he got so defensive and upset and âim not listening, ur lying, ur lyingâ to glados when she started bringing up his past and identity within aperture. Because, firstly, it hurts and he doesnt want to acknowledge or even think about it. Secondly, he doesnât want chell to know this about him. hed bury this bit of knowledge deep down in the core of the earth to escape from it and never have anyone else ever treat him the way heâs been treated because of it.
also i do headcanon him not even being programmed to be stupid, or that its a quality he possesses because they made him so and named him accordingly, I believe the scientists just took a look at this person who talks âway too muchâ and has some bizarre ideas theyd deem stupid and just being like, yeah, lol, i feel like im losing IQ points when im around him, lets call him intelligence dampening sphere and then call it a day. They were hoping that these outlandish ideas that come out of his mouth a mile a minute would make glados so unfocused that she wouldnt be able to think about murdering them. and these ideas of his are just his unfiltered thoughts poured right out for everybody to hear, because, from my experience, thats a very adhd thing to do. talk first, think later. everyone has these bizarre thoughts, its just that ppl with adhd have a harder time filtering them out or refining them before talking about them. theyre just excited to share with an audience.
âwith characters who also did bad things (a lot more bad things that are also worse than what he did) like glados and cave, its either excused/not brought up a lot or they get more love for it because they were very funny and sacastic when they were doing the bad things.â
Iâve noticed this to in the fandom as well and its such a double standard that my mind just explodes thinking about it. glados and cave are arguably MUCH WORSE than wheatley in terms of what theyve done. I mean glados actually committed genocide (and keeps killing her test subjects because idk they did her meaningless tests and they bore her now) and cave was an ableist man who also killed people in the name of science and âwhy not.â Even rick isnt really that nice because he makes pretty sexist and plain disgusting remarks about chell. But theyre all funny when they do it, so its okay, apparently. But they dont extend this forgiveness to wheatley, who âonlyâ almost killed a person he promised to help, because he mistakenly thought he was betrayed and wronged by that person first and because he was literally connected to a device that canonically works kind of like cocaine. all because he wasnt funny when he did it. because all of a sudden it was real. it wasnt just a funny case of big robot lady hurling comedic insults at us while also trying to kill us anymore, it was a hurt robot ex-companion who couldnt take all of what life had unfairly hit him with anymore and lashed out on you. It became personal all of a sudden. (and yeah no bashing here either, theyre all genuinely well written characters and i like them, but yeah, why is wheatley the only one getting any hate).
and yeah i really agree with what you said about the âtalking about his good qualities = excusing himâ. its such a bad take, honestly. its not excusing him. were fully aware what he did was Not Good. it was not right. but we just acknowledge that hes not irredeemable or inherently a bad person. just that the circumstances were very, very unfortunate, and he done goofed. but that he could possibly come back from it. if he ever comes back from space. which is another thing we shouldnt go into in this post because i could talk forever about how tragic such a fate is, especially for someone who already has spent an eternity in isolation. now he must spend another eternity in the vacuum of space, a forever think-about-what-youve-done corner.
yess the first link, i think i actually took inspiration from that post to write the line in this post about him being a better ally and villain than glados, because i read that post and i was just like, yeah, you put the things i was thinking into words and ur so right. but yeah, glados is not really helpful as an ally, she even admits that she doesnt have a plan, shes just aiming for revenge and taking him down with them now (paraphrased from the game). Meanwhile, yes, wheatley has incredibly smart plans both as a friend and a foe. especially comparing the resources he (a little limbless, powerless ball) had to the resources glados (the ruler of aperture with every tool she could wish for at her disposal) had. so, you see, wheatley is right about not being a moron. this is why i headcanon that hes not even really built to be stupid, because he just isnt, and that it was more of a label the scientists happened to give him because why not. it was the most accurate to them. hes a person of average intelligence i would say, and actually does pretty well under pressure, even though he does freak out, and complain, he sticks by his plan and his plan is good.
I think the reason he outsmarts glados many times is because hes used to having to prove himself all of the time and being underestimated, meanwhile, glados takes her intelligence and power for granted and therefore has grown blind to threats. she underestimates others and overestimates herself. wheatley knows and is terrified of gladosâ power and plans accordingly. (and yeah, i agree that ppl have just decided to hate him so its easier to disregard all of his good sides and accomplishments.)
and yess the second link, just, perfection. very well formulated. his will is really strong. its just that, yes, hes very unsure of himself, because no one has ever been on his side. hes very insecure, has a strong inferiority complex, bullies others to feel better about himself, and eventually, thats his downfall. all of this because of his lot in life. if he had just had a good place to emotionally grow up in, hed have been much more confident in himself and not so distrustful of humanity or the concept of friends. I donât think the elevator scene would have gone the way it did if hed had the support every person deserves in his life.
âA longing to prove himself- not as powerful, but as someone worthy of respect, worthy of trust, and worthy of friendship.â
I agree so much with this sentence, because even though he does choose power over friendship in aforementioned elevator scene, he does so because he thinks the one friendship he could have had in his life and was willing to root for, was believed by him to be forfeited by chell, or even worse, to never have existed in the first place, as she was working against him from the very beginning. Like everyone else in his life ever. and this was just the last straw for him. he said ok then, Life, if youre so hellbent on having me live life alone forever, then i at least refuse to be tiny, insignificant wheatley any longer. and with this new power, heâll make life extra hard for everyone he feels has ever wronged him. because hes angry, and hurt, and vengeful, and completely and utterly Done with being trampled on by everyone. but what he really wants above all, is to just belong, to matter, and to be respected. thats not very much to ask, yet he never got it, and eventually, thats the one thing he finally gave up on ever having, I think. settled for the next best thing.
but yeah, ive also thought about how similar wheatley and chell are in regards to tenacity, yet so different in so many other aspects. also yes please elaborate on anything and everything you want, i love discussing these things.
also yes please elaborate on anything and everything you want, i love discussing these things.
welp, you asked for it
(also everything you said is perfect and now i just want to copy and paste it here but anyway..)
so yeah, even glados, in the end, finds out/realizes and acknowledges that wheatley, despite being built to be the IDS, is pretty smart/has good plans and gives him recognition:
âOkay, credit where itâs due: for a little idiot built specifically to come up with stupid, unworkable plans, that was a pretty well laid trap.â
and:
âI never expected you to make it this far. To be honest, after your performance in the calibration test I was ready to break down your cores and put them back in the scientific calculators I took them from. But you two have become quite the team. Extremely close.â âI have only met one other team closer and one of them was an imbecile I had to destroy. The other? Well⌠I donât think I want to go through that again.â
yeah the 2nd one is glados saying that blue and orange have become quite the team but chell and wheatley were a closer team than them, but i specifically wanted to talk about this line: âone of them was an imbecile I HAD to destroyâ
why did she, the ruler of aperture, the powerful giant-robot-in-control-of-everything, the great and genius supercomputer who knows all HAVE to destroy someone stupid, a fool so much smaller than her, a powerless tiny little metal ball who was made to have stupid unworkable plans, who only had his optimism and talkativeness.
well, i think its because in the end she found out that he really wasnt just a maroon who was made to have bad ideas
hes not a genius or anything but he was pretty smart, he was capable of thinking of and doing a lot of things that she didnt despite being small and powerless, and he did have plans that were effective and sucessful.
and then he teams up with her murderer to bring her down. he helps THE test subject and together theyre an even bigger force to be reckoned with. (also this is very old but you should give it a read op, its a very good hc)
he was a serious threat to her and a formidable enemy (but mostly chell though, duh). but yeah in the beginning, she underestimated wheatley and overlooked him bc to her hes just a core programmed to generate bad ideas and is stupid. she thought that he wasnt a problem and hes not something to worry about.
.
.
.
now thats out of the way, ill just share my thoughts about what you wrote:
>>yeah it was probably like survival of the fittest or something down in aperture during those 9999999
>>âppl/cores probably jokingly or half-seriously treated him as if he had the cooties or somethingâ lol thats funny but sad
>>yeah its like, he does seem pretty smart when he doesnt try to look smart and acts natural, the way he really is, but when he overdoes it/tries too hard he only makes himself look bad/stupid and makes a fool of himself
>> yeah it wasnt funny when he did it bc it was serious and personal to him. i actually think that in the betrayal, for wheatley, most of it wasnt about you/the player/chell. to me it was about him and his deep-rooted issues. its about all the negative feelings hes bottled up all these years and about his past which hes tried so hard to move on from/leave behind.
its only in the boss fight where its actually about you and him, your relationship/friendship with him, and the things he felt/feels about you.
also what i like is that wheatley had reasons for doing the things he did and thats one of the things that made him forgivable, for me atleast. it wasnt just âlol ill go and punch them down this pitâ or âim gonna force them to test bc i felt like itâ or âim gonna turn on you for shits and gigglesâ
>>âhes not irredeemable or inherently a bad person. just that the circumstances were very, very unfortunate, and he done goofed. but that he could possibly come back from it.â exactly. although to me, while i dont think hes evil or inherently a bad person, i do think that he can be pretty morally grey/morally dubious sometimes. but yeah i really do think that he can redeem himself and change to be a better person if he was given a chance to
>>'i could talk forever about how tragic such a fate is, especially for someone who already has spent an eternity in isolation.â yeah he already spent those 9999999 alone in aperture and now hes spending another eternity alone again, in space (space core is there too but still)
also this is an unpopular opinion, but i dont think he deserved the ending he got.
like i saw a lot of people (who do like him) wanting him to be punished and be hurt physically (and emotionally too) for what hes done bc to them he deserves it. and back then i kinda agreed that he deserved to be punished too and be stuck in space but now that time has passed and i got to know more about the character/s, i dont think that anymore. i actually think its too much and that it really is a harsh punishment for him and what hes done.
like cmon, we didnt punish and hurt glados when we finally had the chance to (and im not saying we HAD to okay), when she was very small and powerless and she needed our help. after every bad thing shes done to us (and other people) we didnt turn her into mashed potatoes or fed her to that bird (i mean yeah we did need her to rule the place again so it doesnt blow up and we dont all die)
i guess you can say her being turned into a potato and then later being pecked by a bird was a punishment, or that having her body and her facility stolen, and then later being forced to watch the facility be neglected and ruined while it was about to explode was hard for her.
but, not only was she not actually hurt (again not saying she had to), but you/the player didnt cause all that or did that to her directly (the only time she was actually hurt, i think, was the core transfer but that also isnt your fault and its not like you and wheatley knew it would hurt her). so yeah, to me its basically: we didnt hurt and punish our enemy who did bad things to us (and many others) so why do we have to do that with our other enemy? especially when the things he did was not really as bad as the bad things the first enemy did.
>>he seems to bully people who are not present/are absent from the scene and people/robots that are smaller than him. i think its a case of a victim of bullying becoming a bully themselves
>>yeah if only he didnt have so much emotional baggage, had support, and the characters communicated with eo properly things would have happened differently
>>i actually think that he doesnt really want to rule the place. because if he did, no matter how bad the itch to test was and how good the testing euphoria was, he wouldnt neglect the facility and his duties. he wouldnt just let the place get destroyed and he wouldnt just rip apart the test chambers and smash them together without a care in the world. (and i know its partly because he doesnt really care about science and testing and aperture)
what he really wanted was to finally be respected, to not be tiny and little and not be called stupid anymore, to finally have something that belonged to him (to me the reason for 'wheatley labsâ and the giant monitors with his face was ownership bc he never really had something that was his), to be someone who mattered, to not be made fun of and ridiculed, and to finally be treated properly
you know⌠all he wanted to do was to make things better for him
and he thought that being plugged into the mainframe and being the central core of aperture would make his life better and would solve his problems or make them go away, thats why he chose that over friendship. but yeah it only made them worse literally too bc isnt the chassis like a drug that magnifies the personality of whoevers in charge and then there was the itch, like wow being in charge of the fcility actually really sucks and isnt really great at all
he thought that being in charge of the whole facility and being the ruler was the best thing that has ever happened to him. the greatest moment of his life he called it.
but no. the best thing that happened to him was finally having a friend and having a chance to escape to the surface with his friend. that was his real chance to start anew, for things to get better, and to finally move on from his past, his problems, and the feelings hes got bottled up.
Yeah, glados does realize later on that she underestimated him, but Iâm not sure if she consciously accepted it or if it was more of a sub-conscious thing. Like, she still thinks hes an idiot and i think shed have a hard time accepting the fact that hes not. i think she maybe chalked it up to freak incidents and a lucky streak for him, and maybe also that chell is the smarter one of the two, maybe that he picked up a thing or two from her, but I think sheâd very reluctantly acknowledge the fact that hes not stupid like she wants to believe.
but she could have realized and acknowledged it to herself, but would never acknowledge it aloud to neither chell nor wheatley. not even to the testing bots does she want to acknowledge that hes not an imbecile, only that he had to be destroyed. but thats just how glados as a character is, her default speech mode is set to verbal harassment.
anyway, the fact that she admits that she had to destroy wheatley is as big of an acknowledgment of his intellect as she will make, and so it also bugs me a bit in many fics where glados just⌠lets go of wheatley. for any reason, be it that shes sure he wont survive out there on his own, for torture, for chell to find him and kill him⌠i just feel like its not something glados would do. one, it poses too much of a threat to her, as shes learned by now. two, as the sadistic and vengeful person that she is, why punish someone if shes not there to witness the debilitating, amusing psychological effect it has on her subject? if she brought wheatley back from space, it would be after enough time has elapsed that history has lost its novelty and shes grown too cocky once again. in her own words: comedy = tragedy + time. And bringing wheatley back would only be to punish him, within the walls of aperture. it would be for closure and amusement, because sheâs constantly bored to death and doesnât have much for stimulus in her isolated facility. and because she holds grudges like no one else, and i bet my life she doesnât just get over what wheatley did.
that other post u linked was a very nice read! I donât really have anything to add that i havent already written above, but i completely agree.
not only serious and personal to him, but also to the player. as the player, you just got betrayed by your funny companion core and means of escape. I thought of another thing regarding the excusing someone because theyre funny, and its kind of related to this. you can actually observe this phenomenon purely with wheatley as the subject of study. a lot of people actually do like him pre-betrayal, when heâs really funny⌠even though he also says a lot of mean and questionable things. Examples are: almost calling your appearance terrible, calling you brain dead, showing disdain for humans as a whole, suggesting sacrificing your life to glados to save his, bullying dead kids and machine life forms he deems below him. No one would gloss over this behavior from a person⌠unless theyre funny and charismatic, which wheatley was. he also got the treatment glados, cave, and rick got⌠up until the moment he betrays you, because thats when things stop being funny. thats when you as the player realize, oh, he just turned on me. so now its become personal for the player, its not funny anymore.
but yeah, i agree with the betrayal scene to him not even being fully about chell. thats what i meant with what he perceived to be chellâs betrayal being the last straw for him. it dug up everything in his past that hed worked so hard to sweep under the rug and deny and forget, and it made him snap. and hes letting all of those bottled emotions out on the two people present. hes upset at every human, every robot, every being, everyone. chell is just another fish in the sea of people who have wronged him now. until the boss fight yeah, thats when hes uncorking the other bottle with the things chell did that he took issue with.
and yes! everything he did, no matter how fucked up and bad it was, had a reason or many reasons behind it, contrary to what many other people believe. I see people saying he just took the opportunity to turn on chell as soon as he was given it, or that he planned to betray her all along, or that he just did it because hes stupid⌠but all of his actions are literally the culmination of a lifetime of emotional neglect and abuse, as well as the product of his impulsive personality and the amplifying effect of the chassis. nothing he did is unexplainable. inexcusable, maybe. but not unexplainable.
wheatley is absolutely a morally gray character. the examples i gave earlier on mean/questionable things heâs done/said is proof of that. what i meant with him only having done the mistakes he did because of circumstances, is that i dont think he would have been this morally gray in the absence of said circumstances. he is this way because life in aperture shaped him to be. its not the way i think he would want to be, or would naturally be, but its the way he had to be to adapt to the harsh, unforgiving world of aperture. the facility and its population was morally gray, and wheatley picked up a thing or two after being around them for so long.
âalso this is an unpopular opinion, but i dont think he deserved the ending he got.â
i absolutely agree. the punishment he got is comparatively much worse than what glados got, and i think its crueler than what he deserved. at least if we assume he is stuck in space forever, from that point on. I think, if he only stayed there for a couple of years at most, it would be a pretty good punishment, because i do think he needs time and space and distance to really think about the events and do some introspection. if he had stayed in the facility, he wouldnt have gotten that chance, and theres a possibility he wouldnt truly understand where he went wrong or what he needs to improve within himself. but an eternity in space is needlessly cruel and entirely too much, because when heâs finished thinking about what transpired and what hes done, hes regretting it. not because hes stranded in space, but because he truly regrets having acted the way he did, because hes distanced himself from the chassis effects and his place of hurt enough to understand that he gravely misunderstood the situation and acted wrongly. and if hes stranded in space forever, these revelations are wasted. and hell just be trapped in the vacuum of space, anguished forever, or until he crashes into a planet and dies, or until he strays farther and farther away from earth, maybe far enough to get disappear past the event horizon of a black hole and die.
its definitely a case of a bully victim becoming the bully.
yeah i dont think he wanted to rule aperture either. he just wanted to be respected and taken seriously. he didnt want to feel tiny and insignificant. ruling aperture was a logical step towards accomplishing that. good point about the wheatley labs stemming from his wish to own something. i think he wanted to own his accomplishments. to make it a tangible thing, visible to everyone in aperture including himself, the proof that tiny little wheatley did this.
yeah⌠man it makes me really sad to think about the path wheatley could have taken instead that would have made all the difference for him and his well-being. I think it just hurts how close he and chell were to finally escape from everything and start anew.
I was gonna end it there but i also wanted to add that another reason i think wheatley changed his mind and brought the elevator down, that has to do with the building suspicion and distrust of chell, is that he realized that he would be completely dependent on her outside of aperture. hes dependent enough inside of aperture, but outside, where there arent even any management rails for him to navigate around with somewhat independently? hed be completely at the mercy of chells whims. chell, who refuses to communicate with him and who has failed to catch him and who has killed cores in order to kill glados. chell, who he doesnt actually know all that well. that is objectively terrifying, and i understand hesitation.
your thoughts about glad bringing wheat from space to punish him but not letting him go is interesting, i didnt really think of that.
and yes he lashes out on us/you/the player not only bc he thinks youre the one who betrayed him and youre siding with glados and you were never really his friend, but its also bc you were the only one there in that scene with him (other than glados).
the actual people who hurt him (those scientists) are long gone and you were the only one left so all that anger and bottled up feelings got directed at you instead. idk its like you became some sort of representative for those humans or something and so he took it out on you
'but all of his actions are literally the culmination of a lifetime of emotional neglect and abuse, as well as the product of his impulsive personality and the amplifying effect of the chassis. nothing he did is unexplainable. inexcusable, maybe. but not unexplainable.â agree with all this
his expression in the betrayal scene for the line 'actually..â is wide eyed/suprised like he just realized that the 2 of you didnt have to leave yet and that he doesnt have to follow you/do what you want. he can do whatever he wants now bc hes the boss, and what he wants is to stay and be incharge for a bit longer. and glados is defeated, theres no more danger, the 2 of you dont have to rush so he returns the lift to the chamber.
at first he did want to go with you and finally get to the surface but as you get into the lift and as the lift goes up hes feeling great and hes very happy about his new capabilities. being incharge and being in that body feels amazing and he wants to keep feeling that way. he doesnt feel tiny and insignificant anymore. (for him) its the greatest thing thats happened to him and its all hes ever wanted. so of course he wouldnt want to just leave all that behind so soon and have it taken away from him already when he just got it.
although i kinda dont really understand why he didnt let you leave. like he can still be incharge while youre up in the surface. i guess its because he thinks that the 2 of you have to be together bc you were a team. so since hes staying you have to stay too.
i want to talk about his apology and why it is sincere bc ive seen ppl say that it wasnt even though the writers said it was sincere and he potentially learned a lesson
if he wasnt actually sorry and regretful then why bother showing it?theres no reason to show wheatley apologizing in space and feeling bad about what hes done after everything thats happened if he didnt truly feel bad and wasnt genuinely sorry. like we could have finished the game thinking he was truly bad, hes not sorry at all for the shit hes caused and done to you, and he never realized his mistakes even after he got sucked into space but no
we see him apologize, he looks sorry and sounds calm. hes not angry, bitter, resentful, or vengeful. he says he was bossy and monstrous. he doesnt blame you, the chassis, or glados, he knows hes the one who fucked up
this scene would have no purpose if his apology wasnt sincere, and they probably already cut/removed unnecessary stuff from the game so why keep this scene if it really shows nothing and was just 'hes saying sorry but hes not really sorryâ.
also ive seen ppl say he was pretending/acting like he was sorry but that doesnt really make sense. who is he fooling then? the only one whos there with him was space core, who doesnt really care, isnt listening and doesnt really know what hes talking about. the person he wants to apologize to cant hear him and is somewhere else far far away from him.
your hc about the betrayal in the end was also interesting, i never thought about it that way but that does make a lot of sense and youre right, that would be terrifying for him.
.
crud i reached tag limit so ill put these here:
=also ive seen how those other shippers portray their pairings and its not all mature and serious and a lot of them are the cutesy shippy stuff too. and who says that there arent any serious and mature cheIIeyy stuff? even as friends there are lots of serious fanworks of them. ive seen a lot of old but great stuff
=but yeah youre right its more of a coping mechanism for him and escapism. he had to be like that/act that way bc of his situation, i mean just what else could he have done.
=just hide all the bad stuff deep down and smile, be cheerful and optimistic and ignore the shitty feelings youre actually feeling
=i actually dont really want to talk about ships and ship wars that much (bc those are stupid) but i wanted to share my thoughts. and sorry that this happens to you and others op, no one should be accused of being/doing something bad bc of what they ship. and yeah that was uncalled for and definitely not okay.
=(this isnt directed to you op, its for everyone) dont be a jerk and let people have fun and ship what they want so you can go to your corner of the fandom and ship what you want. ships other than yours shouldnt bother you and affect your enjoyment of the series/of your pairing. and dont put labels on people based on their ships pls bc it does feel bad for them, especially when you are wrong and those people are not like that at all.
Okay so my interpretation of the betrayal scene is this:
the moment wheatley is connected to the chassis, hes positively elated. He says to chell: âDo you have any idea how good this feels?â And I donât think heâs referring only to his sense of accomplishment from having his plan work and being at the top of the hierarchy now, i think hes actually being fed the solution euphoria in those moments. think about it: the chassis has a built-in function that is supposed to make you addicted to testing to benefit aperture. to ensure that the central core will want to test for the exchange of that euphoria, they would have to receive a test sample of it first, with a promise of âthereâs more where that came from⌠if you begin testing.â so, this, combined with the fact that wheatley was in a state of constant emotional and physical hurt, and that hes naturally inclined to pursue hedonism, really made for a compelling alternative.
and the chassis amplifies your emotions as well, right? so as soon as he got connected to the chassis he felt: elation, euphoria, accomplished, successful, triumphant⌠suspicious, doubtful, paranoid, betrayed. because his mind is running at top speed at this moment, jumping from thought to thought, from feeling to feeling, he starts thinking about the events leading him and chell here. at first hes intending to get them both out still, but hes getting distracted, and hes remarking on how chell is now tiny and insignificant, how the roles have switched, the tables have turned, and how chell doesnt wanna talk to him, how chell let him fall to the floor, how chell is dangerous and deadly and not on his side because she doesnt even want to celebrate his accomplishment she just wants to escape, she just wants to use him, she will leave him outside to rust in the dirt while she goes milking cows and braiding hair with her fellow smelly humans and he wont stand for that and hes helped her so much already so⌠actually⌠now she can help him feel good by solving a few tests.
so in conclusion, wheatley went from intending to keep his promise, to feeling the instant elation and relief of the chassis, to remembering everything and talking himself into believing hes on his own like hes always been because of growing paranoia and distrust, to bringing the elevator down, because actually, why do we have to leave right now? why do you get to boss me around however you want and why am i just bending to your will and everyone elses will? i dont have to anymore, and i wont, because im the boss now. how does that feel?
yeah no i agree with your thoughts about his apology. its genuine for all of the reasons you stated.
