When a non-language person interjects pseudolinguistical prescriptivist bullshit into a conversation and looks to you for approval
‘aspiring polyglot’ and ‘future polyglot’ and similar ways of self-description are interesting to me because they present ‘polyglot’ as an end-goal rather than an ongoing process
unless you have a ridiculously specific definition of ‘polyglot’ - one that reaches beyond speaker of multiple languages - it’s really difficult to know when you’ve crossed the border from whatever-you-were-before to polyglot
it’s similar to saying ‘I want to be fluent’. What is fluency? How do you know you’ve got there?
it’s difficult to use certain self-descriptors without questioning whether you’ve earnt them yet or if others will understand you’re still limited, so I understand why some people start off by saying ‘I’m not there yet’, but in my experience that’s another way of putting yourself down idk
I love how potato in French is pomme de terre, which pretty much means “earth apple.”
like what stupid frenchman saw this:
and said “zis petite légume looks like a, how you say, APPLE! hmmm… but it grows in ze earth… HON HON HON! MAIS OUI! C’EST UNE POMME DE TERRE!”
j’adore comment ananas se dit pineapple en anglais, ce qui veut littéralement dire “pomme de pin”, genre quel type anglais a vu ça:
et s’est dit : “ow cette étrange big fruit ressemble à une, how do you say, POMME! hmmm… mais plutôt une pomme qui pousse dans les pins… HU HU HU! OH YES, IT’S A PINEAPPLE!” (z’avez vu, on peut le faire aussi… hon hon hon!)
WELL PLAYED, FRANCE.

Finding something funny that you think your friend would like but not being able to share it with them because it’s in a language they don’t speak.
Duolingo, asking the real questions.
Shout out to German children who have to learn words like Gleichgeschlechtslichelebensgemeinschaft for spelling tests
gleich + geschlechtliche + lebens + gemeinschaft
It’s long, but at least it’s logical and the pronunciation is not ambiguous. You don’t get “where/wear/ware” or “they’re/their/there” problems in German.
It’s not even really one word. It’s four words.
I'm very glad you're enjoying college! Keep studying hard and doing great.
Thank you!

Hey guys,
I haven’t been posting much lately. That’s because I’m in college. Part of the reason I came to lovely, language-oriented Middlebury College was so I could pursue my passions in a less internet-based way. So at least for now, I won’t be spending quite so much time on Memrise, Duolingo, or Tumblr. I’m spending just as much time on languages, but I’m focusing mostly on French, Arabic, and linguistics (I’m not taking a class in French at the moment, but I do my best to use French as much as I can, so as not to forget too much). My linguistics class is terrific. I’m also taking macroecon and a really interesting first-year seminar focusing on the concept of karma in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.
So, yeah, college is great. This blog is still active, but won’t post as frequently as before.
Cheers.
“We're building a course to help Syrian refugees in Germany. Apply to contribute: http://t.co/hMJp0stTka”
Duolingo is building a German for Arabic speakers course to help the literally hundreds of thousands of refugees who are fleeing to Germany recently!
Please consider becoming a contributor for this course if you’re both fluent in German and Arabic to help build this course, if you have some spare time. I feel like this course will be of immense help to those refugees.
Je fucking liebe lenguas!
Slavic countries call Germany variations of Nemecko etc. "Nemy" means mute or someone who can't speak in Slavic languages. And It's Nemecko because when Slavic tribes cameacross Germanic tribes they couldn't understand them so they called them mute.
Oh that’s interesting! In Russian it is called Германия (germanija) but that may be the exception to the rule.

I'm pretty sure the names for Germany come from a variety of Germanic tribes. Germania, Alamanni, Saxon. And then Slavs are doing their proto-slavic thing, and then some areas use proto-germanic roots (and that's where Deutschland comes from also).
Oh! Perhaps “Saxon” comes from the same root as the Danish “Tyskland” and the Icelandic “Þýskaland.” It’s a bit of a stretch, though, so maybe not. Thanks for the information!
"Because of Germany's geographic position in the centre of Europe, as well as its long history as a non-united region of distinct tribes and states, there are many widely varying names of Germany in different languages, perhaps more so than for any other European nation." :)
Danke schön! :)
