[ oh! she’s very pretty. Sadie smiles and puts aside her coffee, wiping at her brow. ]

Just in time! Hey, Julie – I’m Sadie.

Thanks for coming on short notice and offering to do it for some donuts. I’ve got a dozen waiting for you in the back – sharing is optional.

[ she reaches out to shake the other girl’s hand ]

It’s nice to see you in person. You’re taller than I expected.

Setting her things on the counter, Julie gladly accepts the outstretched hand, giving it a firm shake. Good to finally know who her mystery donut girl’s name was after all this time. 

“Sadie. Nice to meetcha! –and I’m taller than expected? Man, that’s a new one– usually it’s just the opposite.” Julie frees her hand, bringing it up to wipe her own brow; now wonder Sadie’d sent out a distress call– this place is scorching hot.  “Hey, like I said, it’s really no big deal. I’m just glad to get out once in a while, y’know? As much as I love driving around underground, nothing quite beats the feeling of good ol’ natural sunlight on your skin. So! Why don’t you show me where this busted air-conditioner is so I can this place down to a reasonable temperature and stuff my face with some good ol’ fashioned…old fashions?”

Right! Same to you. And I know I said it before, but thank you, really -- the big boss said that it might take weeks to get someone to come over here and fix the air conditioner.

And -- alright! So the air conditioner is right there, in the front of the room -- above the door, see?

[ she points ]

No no – I mean, I get it! Steven – it’s natural for you to miss your mom. Even if you didn’t get to know her, you still – there are people here who did know her, and that makes you wonder, you know? You don’t need to know how to feel just yet. That’s okay.

[ she sits down next to him and wraps an arm around him, as best she can, in some sort of comfort. She takes a deep breath, thinking about how to describe who exactly Rose-Quartz was ]

Alright. Steven, your mom – she cared about everyone in town. Once your dad showed up, I think – I was still really little, maybe two or three years old, but – my mom would talk about it. That once your dad showed up, Rose was around the town more often. She loved watching after everyone, and every kid in Beach City would flock to her. If a kid went off somewhere by themselves, they were probably with Rose - Quartz. Lars and I were like that too. She always had little candies for us and stories and she let us braid her hair.

…I don’t know much about who she really was, though. When you’re a kid, you see things differently from when you’re all grown up.

But – was that what you wanted to hear? I can tell you a lot more, if you want to know more.

Ah -- yeah! I don’t, I don’t think I ever met the others -- your other caretakers -- not for a long time, it was just her and your dad. They loved helping watch out for every kid, and probably a lot of the adults too -- I just -- you know? Your mom was really nice, and she really loved all of us. She helped me and Lars with a lot of problems when we were little -- but -- ah, I dont’ want to get into that. 

So like…donut-themed? I don’t know any shops that sell that sort of stuff, though – heck, you have to go to Empire City just to get any decent necklaces or anything.

Exactly! Go all out. You may as well have fun dressing up for your job instead of just putting on the same old uniform every day.
