something I've only just realized about pacific rim is that. well. they test for drift compatibility by sparring. and newt and hermann verbally spar all the time.

the scene where raleigh and the audience meet them for the first time shows us how they engage in rapid-fire arguments that can only be possible if they're anticipating each other's responses and forming their own to counter them in advance. soon after we learn that they've been doing this on a regular basis for years. and what's more, newt delivers a pitch-perfect impression of hermann's ranting in sync with him, successfully predicting his exact words before he even starts, and even managing a decent imitation of his facial expressions and body language gestures. their drift compatibility was foreshadowed from the start.

before i forget!!! cool thing we heard last night at the sinners Q&A: MBJ decided to wear different sized shoes while playing smoke and stack. for smoke he wore a size too large, the explanation being that when you're wearing shoes that are too big, you're less likely to want to move around because of how uncomfortable and clunky it is. as a result, smoke as a character is very still and purposeful with his movements. and then for stack he wore a half size too small because it makes you constantly shift around on your feet trying to find a stance and a position that feels right and takes the pressure off your feet. that makes stack more fidgety and restless. so MBJ said that wearing the different shoes made it a lot easier to embody the twins because he was just reacting naturally to what his body was telling him, rather than overthinking his movements. just the coolest shit. such a neat acting choice. i love movies, man.

my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort

the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.

anyway rn my notes are full of a lot of "you should never try too hard to befriend people because you might make them uncomfortable" and "you should never tell people you're attracted to them because you might make them uncomfortable" and I guess I'm just wondering why we're acting like a little social awkwardness is the worst thing that could happen to a person
