And once more, before he could protest or question otherwise, she took the shears and snipped nine of her whiskers, all from the same side, and then placed the nine of them into his hand.
The baron stared at them for a long, long moment, and then brought his gaze back to the little cat, and asked, “...What am I to do with these?”
“Then what great advantage is afforded to me in taking them from you?”
“That you have them, and I don’t.”
“You certainly do believe so,” Baron agreed and then left.
In the noontime of the second day, the baron traveled over the river to the east of his home, just to the opposite bank in all its pristine golden-green sheen, where he was immediately greeted by a friendly if harried cat the color of ash, clad in a shiny, red sash which was looped over his right shoulder and hugged his left side.
“Thank goodness you’re here!” He exclaimed. “I’ve been looking all over for my sweetie’s other half, and I haven’t been able to locate it anywhere!”
Baron hesitated, looking the little thing up and down a few times, and then remarked, “Well, I had assumed I would be searching for you, my good man.”
“Not me, my halves remain connected, as you can see by looking at me.” Here, the bridegroom did a little spin to show just how unblemished he was. “Hurry, hasten, she is in the wildflowers yonder, and there’s no time to idle!”
The gentle bride-cat the baron was led to had a quite wan, chagrined look, although she welcomed her company as graciously as might be expected otherwise. More than graciously, in fact, as she had, indeed, been cut in half at her midsection, and laid upon the grass and buzzing bees with her paws folded politely and placidly upon her chest.
