Go to www.touchnote.com and click “Sign in” in the top right corner (if you’re on mobile, either load the desktop version of the site from your options menu or download the app)

I hope this letter finds you well. I am a dedicated SyFy viewer, and I’m writing to you today as part of the #PeopleLikeMe campaign to discuss The Magicians and the larger ramifications of the Season 4 finale.

Sera Gamble, John McNamara, and Henry Alonso Myers made the decision to permanently kill the main character, Quentin Coldwater, through what McNamara admitted was ambiguously a suicide, and to remove Jason Ralph from the cast. While losing a beloved character is always difficult, it is not that he was killed at all but rather how his death was handled and the implications surrounding it that concern me.

Quentin was a groundbreaking character because of his visible history of and struggles with mental illness and depression, and because he was a member of the LGBT community, having had romantic relationships with both male and female characters on screen. He represented “people like me” and gave many of us hope for the future.

Not only did Quentin choose to die; his friends were also depicted as better off because of his sacrifice. The show sent a harmful message to viewers, particularly in validating a common fantasy for suicidal people: that the world would be better if they were dead. This ending is not subversive or revolutionary; it is toxic, lazy, and plays into a number of damaging tropes. Queer, mentally ill people die young far too often in real life. We deserve a better ending to Quentin’s story: one where he lives past his twenties and does not die by his own hand.

I would like to see Quentin’s story continued actively and respectfully, in a way that makes it clear that a queer character with a history of suicide attempts choosing to die is not a good death. Unfortunately, Gamble, McNamara, and Myers have made it clear that they do not understand why so many viewers are concerned. I’m writing to you in hopes that you will recognize the importance of rectifying the harm that has been done, and that SyFy will choose to instead tell respectful and meaningful stories about and to marginalized people.

Despite Gamble, McNamara, and Myers using Quentin’s sexuality and disability to fuel tragedy, I believe there’s still hope. This is a show that thrives on creativity and magic; if anyone could find a way to subvert common, harmful tropes to bring back a queer, depressed character despite impossible odds and give him a happy ending, it would be The Magicians.

I have included with this letter the King of Hearts, which the show made symbolic of the character of Quentin. The King of Hearts is also known as the Suicide King. I’m removing this card from my deck and sending it to you to represent my rejection of stories that end with people like me choosing to die young. I’m putting the story, like this card, in your hands, and I hope you will help to change it for the better.
