âWhat does âorganicâ mean to you?â
âTo me when I think of the word âorganicâ here in this context and how it led me to create my artworks, there is no singular explanation - but it might be a certain memory trapped in the depths of my mind, or the texture of someoneâs hand I held as a child or the surfaces of trees and shells from the ocean. It might be a specific scent or a certain feeling that cannot be expressed by words.â
Chinoko Sakamoto was introduced to clay sculpting during her time at Camberwell College of Arts where she majored in BA Fine Art Sculpture and continues to use clay as a primary material to create her artwork. Each of her sculptures is independent and unique to her taste as she uses her hands to sculpt and finish them with her distinctive blend of slips and glazes.
She is inspired by a range of objects from ancient ritual pots and modern plastic commodities to fresh fruits piled up in the market and living plants. The daily observation of these objects across the eastern and western cultures, (Japan, the UK, and other European countries she visited during her study) is a key element of her practice.
Her works are considered organic but also evoke viewersâ sense of architectural forms and spatial ideas. Viewers are led to understand each piece of the work as an individual but also see it as a part of a group by observing the objects closely, touching their surface, and holding them in their hands. This may be because each artwork has a fragmented or unpolished atmosphere and ephemeral possibilities such that it appears to be in the midst of a transformation.
