A Linked Universe fic ft. Spirit written for @opilume for a LoZ gift Exchange!
(5,245 Words)
Summary:
Not taking the hint that Link didn’t want to speak, Time kept talking. “It’s alright if you’re scared. We all were when we found out what was going on.”
“I’m not scared.” He didn’t expect himself to speak, but if people were seeing him as a scaredy cat, then he needed to put a stop to that right now.
“Oh?” He didn’t sound convinced. “Then how are you feeling?”
--
OR: Link meets some really weird people while driving his train by the beach.
(Ao3)
--
By all logic, Link should love water. His ancestors came from an island, his best friend…crush? Maybe? Anyway. His best friend’s grandmother was a pirate, and his predecessor was the Hero of Winds.
Link though, didn’t see water as anything besides deep, unexplored, and something that could swallow him whole. The thought of swimming and not being able to see the ground made his skin crawl. It was what kept him up at night and haunted his dreams. One wrong turn and you could be stuck upside down in the deep abyss forever.
--
Leaning out of his train window, wind whipped through his hair, threatening to blow the cap from his head. Zelda says it stays on by magic, but it’s bobby pins. Not everything needed to be enchanted to be practical. The smell of coal clung to his clothes and every surface he touched. It would probably be a part of him until the day he died.
This is how he liked it. Skyline whizzing by in shades of white and blue, and the thumping of tracks under him. The adrenaline couldn’t be matched. It was freeing. He could travel anywhere their land had to offer.
Today’s journey led him down the beach. Even on the tracks, sand found its way into every corner of the engine. He’s pretty sure it’s out to get him. Like it knows he doesn’t like it, so it goes out of its way to surround him.
Link held his hat securely on his head. Can’t be too careful, even with non-enchanted bobby pins. The sounds of wind and train mixed into what could almost be screams. To anyone else, it might be unnerving, but to him-…oh wait, no, those are actual screams.
Squinting through the gusts bringing tears to his eyes, he could spot figures moving along the tracks ahead, waving their arms.
Well, that’s something you don’t see every day.
Keeping an eye on them, Link reached over and pulled the whistle over his head while throwing a hand up, hoping they saw it as a “Get the fuck off the track!” movement. Apparently, they did not, because instead of getting to safety, the group started running his way.
So, they are either crazy or have a death wish. Good to know.
Pulling himself back inside, he scrambled to the brake lever. Fun Fact! Trains don’t stop slowly. For older models, it can take miles. Luckily, his is not just any train, but that doesn’t change much. Using all his strength, he pulled the lever back, propping his foot up on the control panel for more support. If he runs these people over, he’ll never forgive himself.
The sound of screeching brakes filled the air. That’s not what he likes to hear. Behind the engine, carts clanked together. When this is over, shipment is going to be a mess, and he’s going to be so late an-
BANG!
Link’s whole body jerked. That’s probably the worst sound ever. The whole train shook for a moment before more crashing from behind. Then it was eerily calm. Link stood there, eyes wide and hands shaking.
What just happened???
Voices were coming closer, and Link slowly looked to the side. Still in the same position he was when the chaos started. At first, all he could see was water in the distance. Then a head of blond hair peeked through the window, mouth opened to say something, but nothing came out.
Neither moved, just looking at each other. Ocean blue met foggy morning blue eyes.
“…what the fuck!?” The stranger screeched, and Link agreed.
What the fuck indeed. It was like looking in a mirror. Sure, the other had slightly lighter hair, maybe more freckles, suntanned skin, and brighter eyes, but that was his own face staring back at him. It was unnerving.
“Wind! Get down from there!” Someone yelled from outside.
Neither moved. The other him slowly lifted a hand and waved. Link pried his hand from the brake and tipped his hat. It’s important to be polite, even in strange situations. How do you handle this? He’s read every train manual front to back, and there is not a chapter on dealing with your doppelganger showing up.
Another head entered the window. This one was an older man with a scar over his eye.
“…Oh.” Was all he said.
Once again, Link agreed.
“Let me guess, your name is Link?” The man asked, climbing through the window of the train car. His armor was blinding in the afternoon sun, and he grunted as his boots hit the floor. In any other instance, it would have been a little funny. Not now, though.
Slowly, Link nodded. “How do you know that?” Is he being stalked? Or kidnapped? Both are equally bad. His fingers itched for the sword he hardly knew how to use. It rested in the corner, collecting dust and housing spiders. He only used it in emergencies, and this felt like a big one. Unless these people were just really into cosplay. That could be it, too. Did these people do that live-action roleplay stuff?
“Just a hunch.” The man chuckled. Link really didn’t see the joke. “Why don’t you step out and talk for a few moments, yeah? I think we might be a little lost.”
“You think?” The words slipped out before he could stop them. Quickly, he shut his mouth, looking at the sword on the man’s hip. It’s probably best not to make these people mad. “Sorry, yes. Yeah. I’ll uh, yeah.”
It felt like every muscle was chained to the ground as he lowered his leg from the control panel and scooted across the perimeter of the engine room, keeping a distance between himself and the strangers. When he slid open the side door, he knew there would be more people, but not like this.
A tall boy in a scarf stood next to a shorter boy with colorful clothes, looking across the water and talking. Someone with scars was nose deep in a glorified brick, while a man with a fur pelt over his shoulder listened closely. A brunet drew in the sand, and a blond wearing a sailcloth watched the train while a pink-haired boy poked at a cart with a strange stick.
Link closed the door, took a breath, rubbed his eyes, and opened the door again. Yup. They were still there. This isn’t some hallucination from lack of sleep.
“Holy shit…” Someone whispered, but Link didn’t see who as he stepped out of the engine. He was too focused on the fact that his train cars were ON THEIR SIDES!?
“My train!” He yelled, running to inspect the damage. The side of one was dented, like it had been punched or something. “How does this even happen!?”
“Power bracelet.” His doubleganger said like that explained anything.
Link looked over slowly. “Power…bracelet?”
“Yeah.”
Apparently, Link was the insane one here, because the others just nodded awkwardly.
From the back of the group, the scarf guy stepped forward. “Sailor?” He looked between Link and the doppelganger.
“No, I’m a conductor.” He gestured to his outfit. Sailing is like the complete opposite of his job.
Scar guy put a hand on scarf guy’s shoulders. Wow, Link should really find out these people’s names. “His name is Link.”
Maybe that was a forbidden name in their roleplay group, because everyone’s eyes went wide. Is he about to get jumped? Link is really bad at fighting. He felt his heart rate pick up.
“Well, I suppose that answers some questions.” The sailcloth guy said, pulling a sword from his back.
It doesn’t, it really, really doesn’t. Like, that just makes things more confusing. Link took a step back and put his hands up.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” His voice cracked. “If you want something, just take it!” He never kept anything valuable on the train. There was too big a risk that something would be broken or dirtied with his luck. “I really don’t have anything!”
Pinky McGee, as Link is now naming him, snickered with an eye roll. “Clearly.”
Ok, wow. Now he just feels judged.
Scar face put his hands up as well. “It’s alright. I said we would talk, yeah? Let’s do that.” He turned to his group with an air of authority Link only ever dreamed of having. “Why don’t we set up camp until we get sorted?”
Like he spoke a magic word, the boys spread out and began doing what seemed like a routine. Glorified brick kid pulled a pot out of nowhere, and Link didn’t even have time to ask about that before watching fur pelt guy turn into a big dog.
Link’s seen some really weird things in his life. There was that time Zelda was a ghost and stuff, but this is quickly becoming stranger than that. The walking rainbow, normal guy, and Pinky started to walk around, checking behind large rocks on the beach and patches of grass.
“Sky, Wind. You two stay with me and Link. “ Scar face gestured for them to walk along the tracks before looking down at him. “I’m sure you have a lot of questions.”
That was the understatement of the year.
--
So, Link had learned a lot in the past forty-five minutes.
One, everyone in the group was named Link and had been on some adventure. Two, there is this thing called the Master Sword? It’s like his Lokomo Sword, except completely different in every way. Does that make sense? Three, the doppelganger is the Hero of Winds!? Like, the real one!? He’s still trying to wrap his head around that! And four, apparently the goddess is sending them through portals to defeat a darkness and probably wants Link to go too, which is why she sent the group…soooo, yeah.
By the time they got back to the newly appointed camp, it was nearly done being put together. The smell of freshly cooked food wafted through the air, and sleeping bags were rolled out around the fire. It looked almost cozy.
“About time you showed back up.” Wolf guy, who Link learned was named Twilight, piped up from beside the cooking pot. “Thought we might have to go out and look for you.”
Seeing their small group show up, the others looked over as well. There was an air of anticipation, and Link couldn’t help but want to crawl into a hole and get away from the many eyes looking at him.
Rainbow boy, whose name is Four, cleared his throat. “Soo, he’s one of us, right?” His eyes bounced between the other members. “He’s coming with us?”
Oh Hylia. Going on an adventure through time with strangers? He didn’t know about that.
“And what are we calling him?” The one normal guy, named Hyrule, spoke up. If he didn’t know how they all got their names, he would think his parents were very passionate about the kingdom.
Warriors eyed Link suspiciously. “Why does he look like Wind?”
With that question, an arm was thrown over his shoulder as he was pulled into a side hug. “I’m his predecessor!” The pirate cackled, and Link could only muster an awkward smile. “Time ain’t the only one with someone to follow in his footsteps!” Link is pretty sure he felt his brain rattle from how hard the other shook his shoulder.
The group fell silent until one person snickered. Then another. And then everyone was laughing! Was it at him? Did he do something funny? Is there coal on his face? Zelda always said that stuff stuck to him like a magnet.
“Aye! Cut it out! It’s true! He’s just like me!” Link wasn’t so sure he agreed with Wind on that. Besides looking the same, they seemed quite different. “We both live on islands!” Ok, that’s true. “And went on adventures with someone who could be considered Zelda!” Also true. “And love the ocean!” Ah, there’s the difference.
How does someone tell their predecessor that they don’t like the thing they are known for? Zelda’s library has a bunch of books, but odds are it doesn’t have one for that. Water and trains don’t mix; therefore, Link and water don’t mix either.
“Link here is the Hero of Spirits.” Time put a hand on his shoulder. “This era is after Wind’s, but only by a hundred or so years.”
Why does he say that like it’s not a huge gap of time? “It’s uh…nice to meet you all.” He waved. This has to be the most pathetic introduction any of them has ever seen.
“A pleasure to meet you too, Hero of Spirits.” Warriors had a proud smile looking between the matching boys, and Link’s curiosity wanted to know why, but his anxiety kept his mouth shut. “Glad to have you joining us.”
There it is again. Everyone thinks he’s going with them. Link isn’t someone people want on a fighting team. He’s more of a sit back and fix things up kind of guy. Maybe the person who hypes them up with a firm handshake and a look that says everything will be ok. Besides that, he’s just a guy who happened to save the princess.
“Come on!” Wind began to practically drag him towards the waves. “We can chat by the water while we wait for Wild to finish cooking!”
Yeah, no. He’s drawing the metaphorical line in the sand. Planting his feet, Link shook his head. “Thank you for the offer and stuff. But I should really…um” He looked around, trying to pick the perfect excuse to get him out of this situation. For once, a train on its side is his hero. “Fix the train! Yup! You guys want to talk to Zelda, right? Gotta get the train working to do that! Sooo...”
Ducking under Wind’s arm, he hurried over to the fallen carts. There really was no point in staying and talking to everyone. Link wouldn’t be around long enough to get to know them, anyway. He feels bad, but he’s not the successor Wind wants. He’s not some explorer or super brave. He’s just…Link. Link, who had the princess’s ghost do most of the heavy lifting on his adventure, and Link, who didn’t even know what the Master Sword was until maybe thirty minutes ago.
--
The engine room had plenty of tools to get the carts at least running again; the issue was getting the tipped ones back onto their wheels. Luckily, that problem fixed itself when Wind came over and offered to lift them with the power bracelet things. Seeing them in action was awesome, and the fact that Link himself doesn’t have a pair is an actual crime.
But then Wind came back again to ask if he needed any more help, which he didn’t.
And again to see if he wanted a snack. Link was alright.
And another time to ask if he wanted a break. Nope, train work goes first.
Warriors at one point even stopped by and asked if he wanted company, to which Link just said no thank you, and hammered another beam back into place.
After he doesn’t even know how long, there was once again the sound of boots crunching through sand heading his way. Link had to hold back a sigh. These guys were clingy.
“I don’t need anything right now,” Link said, not bothering to look at who could be approaching him.
“You know, hiding under that…train, I think you called it, isn’t going to make this all disappear.”
Time was here now. Great. The guy was probably going to scold him for being antisocial or something.
Link didn’t respond. A bolt was stuck right now, and he wanted to focus on getting it out. No matter what he did, it wouldn’t budge. Even in as awkward a position as he was, with a leg lifted and pushing against a wheel for support, it didn’t move. Sweat covered his head, and the rails were starting to dig into his back. Getting the train moving was more important than comfort. Trains were what he was good at; if he couldn’t fix it because of one stupid bolt, then that’s just embarrassing.
That was a really good question. How was Link feeling? For a moment, he stopped what he was doing, laying his head back against the metal tracks and taking a few breaths.
“Mad.” It was the first emotion that came to mind. “I can’t get this bolt off. And I’m tired.” He didn’t even realize he was until he said it. “Maybe a little stressed too, after…everything.”
Time hummed, then there was the sound of someone sitting against the train with a grunt. “I understand that. It’s a lot to learn in one day.” A lot didn’t even begin to describe it. “I don’t know if I can help with all of that, but mind if I take a look at your bolt issue? I’ve been told I’m pretty strong.”
For a moment, Link didn’t say anything. Help? Did Link really need help with this? It was his whole job. He could do it himself, but did he have to? It would make things go faster if Time got it unstuck.
Scooting to the side, he made room for the other. “Sure.”
There was shuffling, and Time was slotted next to him. It was a little funny seeing how cramped he was under there compared to Link. It was one of the few advantages of being small.
“Turn it to the left, like this.” Once again, Link tried to loosen the stupid thing, but it didn’t move.
When Time took the wrench, Link wasn’t expecting much. He’d tried everything he knew to get it out the easy way. It looked more and more like he’d have to drill into it, but once again, these time travelers were full of surprises. With a grunt, Time pushed against the wrench. For a moment, nothing happened. Then there was a pop, and his arm was flying forward as it loosened.
Link’s eyes were wide. “How!?” In two seconds, Time did what he’d been trying to do for the past twenty minutes.
The older man chuckled. “I told you I was strong.” Rolling out his wrist, he handed over the wrench. “Now, why don’t you take a break?”
A break? Link can’t do one thing, and suddenly he needs a break. Like he’s weak. He is! He knows that, but having someone else see it made him feel sick.
Lying under the train with Time felt suffocating instead of comforting. Too small. Too hot. Too uncomfortable. It took maybe three seconds for Link to scramble out into the fresh air, tossing the wrench onto the tool bag. The sun was starting to set over the water, and Link was reeling. He had no clue how long he’d been working. His breaths were heavy as he wiped his face with his hands, trying to get the sweat off.
There was one issue. His hands were covered in oil and coal, meaning those same things were now on his face and eyes. It burned. His eyes might as well have been full of sand as he rubbed them, trying to get the feeling to go away.
“Hey, you alright?” Time sounded like he was next to him, but Link couldn’t open his eyes to see where. “What’s wrong?”
Link flexed his fingers, trying to find the words and stay calm. Oh, fuck, he fucked up. “It’s in my eyes.” He squeaked out pathetically.
This was exactly why he’s not cut out to be a hero. He knows not to touch his face with dirty hands, but of course, he does anyway. It’s Link luck, as he calls it. Anything that could go wrong, will. Now he looks stupid in front of the coolest people he’s ever met and is in pain.
There were hands on his shoulders, gently pushing him to walk forward. “It’s ok, we can wash it out.” Link stumbled, hands hovering over his face as he forced himself not to make it worse. “Deep breaths.”
He tried to listen, breathing in the familiar scent of railroad work. Letting someone else guide him was kind of terrifying. What if he walked into the fire? Or a rock? Or he fell? Do the others see him and think he’s a child? Well, he kind of is, but he should be considered an adult with the things he’s done.
“Shit, he ok!?” It wasn’t hard to know whose voice that was. It sounded like a rougher version of his own.
“Just got some stuff in his eyes.” Time gave his shoulders a soft squeeze, and it honestly helped him breathe a little deeper. “He’ll be alright.”
There was shuffling, and someone was on his other side. “I’ve got a cup.” Warriors? Was that Warrior’s voice? He couldn’t remember what all their voices sounded like.
Where was Time leading him, anyway? They had been walking for a while. Was the camp this far? Where were they going to get wate- oh Hylia no, they were going to the ocean, weren’t they!?
“I’m ok!” He yelped, planting his feet in the ground. Time almost ran him over. “It’s fine! I can get it out myself!”
“With what? A dirty rag? That won’t help.” Wind did have a point, but Link wasn’t going to acknowledge it!
He shook his head, trying to rub at his eyes again, but someone held his arms to stop him. “Don’t touch, it’ll make it worse.” Time kept his voice soft. “We’re just going to have you kneel by the water’s edge. That’s it.”
He knew it! Link called it! What if he fell in and drowned!? Or something swam up and ate his eyes!? Or an underwater train hit him! He’s not paranoid! It could happen! There was so much going on at once, and it made him kind of want to curl up into a ball on the floor, but that wouldn’t be socially acceptable in any timeline, would it?
“No! Not by the water!”
There was silence, and then a hand on his arm. “Why not?” Wind sounded confused. It made guilt bubble in his chest. Would his predecessor look at him as a disappointment? Wind worked so hard to find and build this land, leaving his own home behind, and Link is scared to even think about getting in the ocean.
He took a few deep breaths. Time said to breathe, and he didn’t want to make him mad by not listening. “I don’t-…I don’t really like the water.” He admitted in a small voice. “Sorry.”
Once again, there was silence. He knew they were having some sort of conversation without him knowing, and he hated it.
Then a hand slipped into his own. “That’s ok.” He’d expected Wind to sound upset, but it was the opposite. He was calm. “Water is dangerous, trust me, I know, but we’re safe by the beach. I promise.” That made him feel a little better. If anyone knew anything about water, it would be Wind. “We can go slow; wash some out and you tell us if it’s too much.”
He mulled it over. Slow. He might be able to do slow. Responsible people were around him. One of them could save him if something bad happened.
Hesitantly, he nodded. “Slow.”
“Slow it is.”
--
Link knelt in water up to his knees. He’s pretty sure he was shaking like a leaf. Sand dug into his legs from under his uniform, and he could smell the ocean air. It was a little comforting, exactly like the scent of home.
“Tilt your head forward,” Warriors instructed, flipping Link’s hat around to hold his hair back. “I’m going to pour the water over your face first, so hold your breath.”
Link did exactly that and used the hand not holding Winds to plug his nose. There was a countdown, and on one, he could feel the water rush down his face. Warriors rubbed around his eyes first, getting the muck off his cheeks and forehead. Time rubbed his shoulders, muttering encouraging things Link wasn’t paying attention to.
When Warriors stopped, he let go of his nose. “Done?”
“Not yet.” Link luck strikes again. “We need to get the stuff out of your actual eyes.” Warriors might be the worst person ever. Not really, but Link wasn’t having a good time. “You’re going to duck your head under and open your eyes. Blink a few times to try and flush everything out.”
So yeah, this might actually be Link’s worst nightmare.
Wind squeezed his hand. “You got this.” At least one of the two was confident.
Deep breaths, like Time said. If the other heroes could go on some crazy adventures and survive, then Link could stick his face in the ocean. Just do it. The faster he’s done, the faster he can curl up in his train and hide from the world.
Holding his breath, Link went for it. He shoved his head under the water. Immediately, he wanted to pull it back up, but Warriors said he needed to blink. He flickered his eyes open, and they burned. It took a few tries and a death grip on Wind’s hand, but eventually he thought he blinked them enough to get everything out.
As soon as he realized that, he whipped his head up so hard his hat flew off and gasped for air. “I’m done! I’m done!” There was no way he was doing that again.
Warriors cradled his cheek, turning it to face him. “Open your eyes, let me see.”
Cracking his eyes open, he paused to see if it hurt. There was a bit of scratchy irritation, but it didn’t feel like little knives anymore. Opening them more, he could take in Warrior’s face, looking at Link’s eyes with the gaze of someone on a mission. It was a little intimidating.
“Looks alright to me. How does it feel?”
He blinked a few times, glancing over his shoulder at Wind and Time. The younger had a big smile, while the older looked concerned. “Good, better.” Link said, rubbing his eyes.
Time clapped him on the back with a chuckle, and Link swears he almost fell over. “You did good!”
He laughed awkwardly, picking his hat up off the sand. “Thanks for uh…helping.”
“Is that why you don’t like me?”
Link turned to look at Wind, his brows furrowed. Did he hear that right? “What?”
“Is that why you don’t like me?” The Hero of Winds repeated. “Because you don’t like water.”
“No? I do like you.” Why would he think he didn’t? This was his predecessor. He owed everything to him for finding the land they lived on.
The other looked out across the water, his shoulders slumping. “Since you found out who I was, you’ve been avoiding me.”
Oh.
Oh!?
Oh Hylia, he made Wind think he was ignoring him! He kind of was, but not like that!
“No!” He said quickly, standing while brushing his knees off. “ Well, kinda, but I just didn’t want you to not like me!” He snapped his fingers, trying to pull the right words together. “You’re…you’re a hero. You made an entire kingdom. You were brave and-and strong, and commanded a whole ship! I’m just…I’m Link. The train engineer. I’m kind of a scaredy cat who can’t fight and has horrible luck. I’m not a hero like you guys.”
There was shame in saying it out loud. Like he was admitting some sort of crime, but it was the truth. He’s a kid filling too big boots he didn’t even know he needed to. The sound of waves felt like the only thing filling the dead air. He should leave, right? Finish fixing the train and head back to the castle. He was already behind schedule.
“Do you really believe that?” Wind’s voice was serious.
“What?”
Wind stood up with a look Link had never seen before. “That I wouldn’t see you as a hero?”
He blinked a few times before slowly nodding. As soon as he did, Wind reached over and slapped the side of his head.
“Ow! What the fuck!?”
“The only thing wrong with you is that you’d believe that!” He was practically screeching. “Did you or did you not defeat some evil with a cool ass sword!?”
“I uh..I did?” Link said slowly.
Warriors spoke up this time. “And is your name Link?”
“Duh.”
“And did you step up to save the day even though you didn’t need to?” There was a small smile on Time’s face as Link nodded. “Then that sounds like exactly the kind of hero we’re looking for.”
He went to argue, but Wind cut him off, slapping his hand over his mouth. “I don’t give two flying fucks if you get a little scared sometimes or don’t know how to fight! You’re my successor, so you’re automatically cool!” Link’s not sure that’s how that works, but with the passion in Wind’s voice, he wanted to believe him. “You fought ghosts! That’s awesome! I’m proud to say you’re after me, and I’ll tell everyone! Don’t believe me!? Watch!” Turning to camp, he started yelling, “I’m proud tha- ACK!” Wind ripped his hand away from Link’s mouth, cradling it like a dead lover. “Did you just fucking lick me!?”
The other cackled, which quickly turned into a scream as Wind tackled him into the water. “Rule one of being my successor! No licking me!”
Behind them, Time and Wars shared a smile and an eye roll. Things were about to get a lot louder in their chain.
--
That night, after changing into dry clothes and curling up next to the fire, they all held bowls in their hands. Wind and Link sat shoulder to shoulder, giggling between each other. Those two had been joined at the hip since Time and Wars got them to stop trying to drown each other.
From across the fire, Four spoke up. “So, what are you going to go by?”
That…wasn’t something Link had thought about. He shrugged. “I dunno. You all go by your hero titles, right?” There were nods and affirmations from around the fire. “So I guess I’ll do that too.”
“Spirit.” Sky tried out the name first. “I like it.”
Wild snickered. “Kinda creepy, in a cool way.”
“So, Spirit,” Time had this grin that he couldn’t help but copy. “You eager to hit the road?”
Spirit, for once, didn’t hesitate. He adjusted his hat and straightened his shoulders. “I was born ready!”
Wind wrapped an arm around him and pulled him against his side. “You hear that!? This hero is ready for adventure!” He yelled, pumping his fist into the air.
Spirit’s cheeks burned pink as he laughed along with the others. He might not be the strongest or the bravest, but right now, he was the luckiest.
i know shit about wind waker and even less about fishing but PLEASE. takes your hand. we can't keep believing wind when he presents his hyrule as the idyllic seafarer's paradise. he doesn't know the DIFFERENCE. he's a child of the apocalypse just as much as any of time's successors he;s the heir to a kingdom of ruins!!!! there's no fish in his oceans. there's no life in his seas. his zora evolved into birds to get away from the water. does that not tell you something. the fishpeople learnt to fly. the population of the great sea is so SMALL and yet the fishermen still risk their lives searching for enough meat to feed their families because, as ganondorf says, "they are vast seas... they yield no fish to catch." nobody in the game ever gives link a fishing rod. NO FISHING ROD. in the OCEAN BASED ZELDA GAME. no fish motifs in the architecture no swimming for long periods no diving. wind has been born into a world that is unnaturally barren, and it's all but invisible unless you're trying to actually survive there, because the raw power of ocean remains. the tides rise and fall. the moon shines and the islands are peaceful and everything is dead. wind's timeline & the downfall timeline have a lot more in common than you might think. can you imagine the chain travelling to an ocean in another time and wind thinking he knows what an ocean is like. and he doesn't. these new strange oceans are full of fish, and coral, and strange creatures he's never heard of, turtles and dolphins and whales and seals and jellyfish. sharks and eels and stingrays and yabbies and clams and rockpools full of starfish and crabs and octopi. and this is what the ocean is supposed to be like?? hes a CHILD OF THE APOCALYPSE!!!!!! i want someone to take the awestruck wonder people give the downfall boys about fruit-bearing trees and shove it at wind
I feel like Wind has so much more potential in the LU fandom than we are using. Like a kid who, unlike any of the other Links, chooses to save his world and forge his own path. Every other Link is kind of pushed into it by Hylia, but Wind is just a regular kid who sees that no one else is doing anything and decides to help.
Not only that but the entire events of Phantom Hourglass are just insane. I see so many fics of Legend, Marin and Link’s Awakening, but people seem to skip over the fact that Wind had such a similar experience!
Like the whole ghost ship and time shenanigans with a whole world that no one else even believes exists? He’s never going to see that word again. And that temple of the ocean king which slowly sucks the life out of you, where Wind is guided by the spirits of the dead? It has so much angst potential.
I also wish we saw more of Linebeck, like he’s from a world he can never return to and most people don’t even know exists. The only person who has actually been to his world is some kid (I’m not including Tetra since she was stone for most of the journey).
But on that note, I feel like there is even more angst potential for Wind with Zelda being a statue. He has to go through his entire adventure with the stone cold, lifeless body of his best friend and the only one from his world in a world of people who don’t believe him. I can imagine that would cause some issues when he goes to Warriors’ era and sees the stone statues of him 👀.
Not to mention the War of Eras and his whole relationship with Wars and Time, ESPECIALLY if Wind is older in the War of Eras than in LU. Wars and Time have each other and their memories of the war, but Wind goes through the entire adventure of LU knowing something is up with those two and feeling left behind as a result. Then when they get back to the War of Eras and neither the Captain nor Mask remember him? He’s completely alone reminiscing about two people who mean the most in the world to him, but they don’t even know him yet.
TLDR; Wind has so much angst potential and I love him so much, Phantom Hourglass doesn’t get enough credit

I just finished a stage combat weekend workshop, so you know what that means!
Here's what the Biggest Little Theatre Links would work best with in the stage combat world!
--
Time - Broad Sword: This one is kind of a given. It's a large weapon that can easily be played as super heavy (which it is), but with the right training, it is dynamic and just as fluid as any other sword. Time would like the strength it takes to wield it, and mastering something that most people tend to stay away from.
Legend - Rapier and Dagger: I haven't had the chance to work with these yet, but from my understanding, it is so versatile having two weapons. There is an unlimited number of attacks and parries you could come up with. It could be a quick take down, or drawn out to be elegant. Plus, I think the man who collects weapons would want to use two at once.
Twilight - Quarter Staff: OK! HEAR ME OUT! It would have been so easy to say he does broad sword like his dad or something, BUT! You can't tell me this guy who lives on a farm hasn't picked up a shovel or pitchfork and started spinning it like a staff. I think he would like how many ways it could be used. Attacking, shielding, thrusting. It is also so much fun just to spin around in your hands and do tricks with.
Warriors - Small Sword: Small swords are the best weapon ever, and I am totally not biased (they are my fav)! The history of small swords is what I think draws Wars in originally. Nobles used them in the 18th century to duel. When fighting, every move is small, quick, and has almost a flourish to it. So much thinking goes into knowing how to properly parry each quick move and plan your next attack.
Wind - Single Sword: Single Swords are the swords you think of in pirating! Basic answer for Wind? Maybe. But I had to give it to him! There are so many fun tricks you can do, like kicking the sword up into your hand and making the classic swoosh sound when you move it quickly! The guy would have two swords just to randomly give one to the other Links and ask them to come up with a fun phrase and new ideas!
Wild - Unarmed: There is so much you can do with unarmed. Punches, slaps, kicks, grapples, throws, rolls, ducks, dodges. Wild would like them all! He loves the close combat of it and that it's almost play fighting. You need to trust your partner not to rush or push you too hard. Although the burn scars can be sensitive sometimes and he needs breaks, it's still his favorite.
Hyrule - Knife: Knives have so much movement. You are constantly blocking an attack while prepping yours. Hyrule likes being fast on his feet and finding creative solutions to get around his partner. Plus, he has experience using one because of his...we'll call it lack of housing situation for a year or so. He and Wild work together a lot because knife work uses unarmed techniques.
Sky - Rapier and Cape: I haven't had the chance to do this, but I honestly just had the idea of Sky using his sailcloth while fighting. He throws it at the target as a distraction and then stabs through the fabric into them. For the theater universe, I think he would like it for the cool factor and the fact that you get to wear a cape.
The Quadruplets:
Red - Sword and Shield: Another combo I haven't worked with yet. I think Red would like the protection and security that having a sword and shield gives. You can attack and defend with both, and look so cool while doing it!
Green - Single Sword: He's Wind's partner most of the time for Single Sword. While Wind pushes their creative limits by coming up with performance ideas, Green makes sure they aren't going too fast and that everything they do is safe. The last thing they need is to lose an actor.
Blue - Unarmed: Growing up, Blue did combat classes, so everything in unarmed combat is somewhat familiar. He likes that he gets to use his body as a weapon and see what the limits are. When Wild needs to take a break, he steps in to work with Hyrule.
Vio - Small Sword: While Wars likes it more for the flashy fancy of the weapon, Vio likes the precision and calculation of thinking quickly on his feet. He has beaten War's almost every time.

Let me know if you think any differently or have any other ideas!
My ask box is open if you want to know more about this AU or ask the characters questions! I also take writing requests!
Based off of these guys, from this fic! I’m never going to stop yapping about them lmao
Sky has a pet rhinoceros beetle called Beetle!
Four has only fully killed one zombie, he mainly ends up incapacitating them in other ways
Wind has a scar on his elbow from his childhood that he’s ridiculously proud of!! He got it when he was playing pirates out on the rocks with the other kids and slipped
Malon’s favourite meat is lamb, but she feels a little bad about it
Wind and Sky are both lactose intolerant, but luckily there’s not much milk around in the apocalypse for them to worry about
On the other end of the spectrum, Time is a milk addict, and has been craving it constantly since they left the farm. Malon believes he may have a calcium deficiency
Ravio has undiagnosed anxiety, as well as trauma from growing up in a war zone
Whilst alive, Legend’s uncle was actually really sweet and gentle with helping him to deal with this (as well as helping Legend to deal with his trauma) and taught Legend how to do so too
Wars isn’t great with animals, but he likes them nonetheless
In his extensive travels, Hyrule has met with some rather unsavoury characters. This, paired with the whole travelling doctor schtick, has made him pretty famous within various survivor circles
Hyrule has a massive sweet tooth!!! This is shared by Malon, Time and Wind
Legend and Ravio have pretty much the opposite of each others trust issues; Legend tries to trust people but can’t, whilst Ravio has to try very hard not to always instinctively trust every person that is nice to him. It sucks for both of them lol
Legend and Wild both frazzle in the sunlight, those men’s skins are pale as fuck
Twilight is also prone to heatstroke, as where he grew up was usually quite mild and wet in summer and bitterly cold in winter, but tans instead of burning
Wild loves to try out different hairstyles as much as he loves to try out different recipes, his curiosity knows no bounds!
Warriors experiences what I like to dub the Older Sibling Panic, inspired by the time my idiot little sister decided to vanish for an afternoon at the beach and make me genuinely believe she was dead. Jk love you lil sis....
----
Splash!
Wars sighed, leaning heavily into the shifting sands behind his back and letting the warmth of the sun melt his face into a smile. It was nice, for once, to just… get away. Hylia knows they’d earned it, given the absolute shitshow the last couple of days in Wild’s Hyrule had been, and Wars had to admit that as much as he’d been pushing for them to keep moving, a day at the beach was just what they all needed. They might’ve been heroes at heart, but they were still men in flesh. Or, in some cases, boys.
And as hostile as Wild’s Hyrule was, the beaches were stunning.
Just as the Captain had been about to doze off, he felt his ear twitch to the familiar giggle of one of his brothers, barely inches from his face. It was all the warning he was given before a large bucket of sand was promptly dumped above his head and he had to roll wildly to the side to avoid it, the perpetrators cackling like madmen when he wasn’t able to avoid his hair getting caught in the deluge.
Warriors gritted his teeth, drawing a deep breath. Of course, the downside of relaxing anywhere near those hooligans would always be their incurable hunger for mischief; it seemed to be as much a part of being a young Link as the hero’s spirit that held them all together. Heck, even Wars himself had been a prankster when young, though the army had rather weaseled it out of him the moment he’d enlisted.
“Wild,” he hissed, having located both the giggle and the cackling to that particular prankster. The familiar mutter of ‘oh, shit,’ followed by footsteps running away rather backed up his guess.
Wars held back a laugh and jumped from the ground, finally opening his eyes to see both Wild and Legend sprinting away from him at the speed of light, Legend loudly cursing his lack of pegasus boots. He took one moment to shake out his hair before chasing promptly after them with malice, easily outdoing both of their paces due to his long-legged advantage. The Veteran squawked as he was picked up by the back of his tunic and tossed into a nearby sandbank, screaming at Wild to ‘keep running, Nayru damnit!’
Barely moments later, the Champion suffered the same fate as his mischief companion.
“Now that is what you get for interrupting my nap,” the Captain declared, smirking. The glare he received from Legend could’ve withered sunshine. “And for touching my hair, too, whilst we’re at it. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get coarse grains out of hair?”
“Yeah, I do, pretty boy.” Legend shook out his hat, watching as a comical amount of sand cascaded from the fabric. “Some of us have been through sand dungeons, unlike you.”
“Wait, you guys have to shake the sand out of your hair? It just kinda falls out of mine,” Wild added jovially. Wars shared a look with Legend– both knew that whatever sand became stuck in Wild’s hair likely never left. At least, not until his next bath…
“Hey, Wind!” All three heroes turned to see Hyrule running up the length of the beach towards them, his sleeves and trousers both rolled up past his knees and elbows and both absolutely soaked in seawater. He was waving something above his head, something small, red, and definitely moving. “Wind, I found one! Hang on, guys, where’s Wind?”
Warriors frowned. Now that he was thinking about it, he hadn’t heard the Sailor’s voice for a while, which given how loud he tended to get when excited was quite an achievement. A small pang of worry flickered through the Captain’s chest, but he pushed it down. There had to be a better explanation.
“He said he was going over to see Four, remember?” mused Legend, continuing to fuss with his hat, clearly in no way concerned. “You were with us when he said it, Rule.”
Hyrule shook his head. “Yeah, but he’s not.”
Three pairs of eyes darted to the Traveler’s face. Wild cocked his head, squinting dangerously at Hyrule. “What do you mean, ‘he’s not’?”
“He’s not with Four.” They followed the Traveler’s gaze as he pointed towards the far end of the beach, where Time, Twilight, Sky and Four had all been taking shelter beneath the shade of the nearby cliff. Sure enough, though the four silhouettes were small with distance, it was clear to see that there was a distinct lack of a fifth figure, particularly a small, blue-clad, blonde haired one. “I came to you guys because I thought he must not have left yet.”
“But-but we saw him leave ages ago?” Legend exclaimed, and it was at that exact moment that Warriors felt the real terror set in. If Wind had left a long time ago, and yet hadn’t reached his destination or been heard from since…
“Search the area,” Warriors declared, feeling himself tense as his own voice sounded far too Captain-like to his ears. “Legend, search the seas, the kid’s a swimmer. Hyrule, Wild, head towards the Old man and the others, ask if they’ve heard anything. I’ll go look along the other end of the beach. Holler if you find him.”
The colour drained from the Veteran’s face, turning the already pale skin a ghostly white. “You really think it’s that serious?”
“We can’t be too careful, you all know how dangerous it is to go alone. I’m sure we’ll find him quickly, and then scold him for running off, but the longer we leave it the higher the risk gets. Is everyone clear with the plan?”
Three terse nods echoed back at him.
“Good. Then I’ll see you all soon.”
Needless to say, the Captain’s confidence slipped fast from his fingers, running out as quickly as as easily as the sands of the hourglass that had been flipped the moment Warriors had heard of his brother’s absence. If he’d been worried at the start, then after an hour's search with no luck he was practically distraught; everywhere he looked he seemed to see blue, a white lobster pattern stained with blood, and every howl of the breeze against the rocks was a howl of the Sailor in pain. Logically, Warriors knew that Wind was capable in a fight, but every instinct in his body was screaming that this was the day his little brother died, that this was the day that every happy moment he’d built with his newfound brothers came crashing down and shattered his aching heart once more.
“Any sign?” he called to Legend, where the teen was still scouring the water in merform aimlessly. The Veteran returned his yell with a shake of his head.
“Nothing out here. At least… nothing on the surface…”
The thought doused Warriors in ice, froze him right where he stood. Wind could swim, but he couldn’t dive… oh Hylia, what if he’d swum out too far? What if he’d gotten caught on the rocks?
Warriors opened his mouth to speak, and what came out terrified him more than anything his brain had come up with yet.
“Search the seafloor. Check behind the rockpools, behind the cliffs. Anywhere a-”
Anywhere a body could get caught.
Legend’s eyes were wide when he broke off. Within them, Wars could see a long-concealed fear reemerge.
“R-right,” he croaked, voice swallowed by the gentle roar of the waves, before diving back below the surface.
And Warriors… Warriors stood. Had he really just asked his brother to search for the body of their other brother…?
The answer was yes, yes he had. But they didn’t have time for him to freeze up like this, he had to keep looking, had to move on like his entire world view hadn’t just been flipped upside down.
Snapping himself out of it as fast as he’d been absorbed, Warriors resumed his search, jogging along the coastline until he reached a cliff, jutting out from the hills behind to split the beach into two. Waves crashed up against the rocky surface, churning in froth thick enough to hide whatever lurked beneath the surface. Wars couldn’t swim, hadn’t ever been taught, but there was no other way onwards- he’d have to go around. Wind could be on the other side, after all, he could be beneath that very cliff, and there was no way in Hylia that he was about to give up the chance to save his little brother’s life for something as stupid as not being able to swim.
Warriors had already made it waist deep into the surf before the yell caught up to him.
“CAPTAIN! Captain, wait!”
Warriors swivelled where he stood, ignoring how his boots held him down in their waterlogged state, his eyes locking quickly onto a small blonde figure with a smile that could rival sunshine, and a choked gasp wrenched itself from his throat.
It was Wind. Wind, alive. Safe. And by the look of his attire, uninjured, too.
A weight that Warriors didn’t realise he was holding suddenly dropped into his chest, and he was finally able to breathe. Thank the goddesses, his brother was safe, he was safe and alive, and their day wasn’t ruined, and he wouldn’t have to hold the kid’s small body and feel it grow cold.
Wars opened his mouth to call back, to tell Wind just how much he loved him and that he’d never let him out of his sight again, but the build up of adrenaline suddenly hit him in a wash of numbness and what finally came out of his mouth was an enraged, booming yell.
“Hero of Winds!”
The Sailor froze where he’d been running to meet with Wars, and his smile melted instantly when he saw the Captain striding from the waves with a face like thunder.
“Explain to me, if you please, exactly why you thought it would be a good idea to vanish without a trace for half an afternoon?!”
Wind fought the urge to turn and run from the imposing figure storming its way towards him. “I… uh, I didn’t mean to, but I got distracted, and there was this really cool seagull-”
Warriors threw his arms around the boy without hesitation, and suddenly all the anger that had previously been stored in his body seemed to flood from him like the water from his boots. He held his brother close, clutching him tightly, hoping never to have to let him go again.
Wind gave a relieved sigh, grinning as he hugged his older brother back. “I’m okay. Sorry I scared you, Captain…”
“...it’s fine.” Warriors sniffed, pulling back harshly. He offered the little Sailor a pointed smile. “You’ll have to be the one to tell Legend to stop searching the seabed for your body, after all.”
for the theatre au, can we get a bunch of fun facts about each of the quadruplets? :D
FINALLY CAN AWNSER THIS YIPPIEE!
I have been waiting until I got the 4 swords manga so I could know the boys a little better
AND I JUST GOT IT!
-------
Blue tried performance theatre for a while, but he switched tracks when he realized how hard it was to portray emotion on stage.
Red was a technical theatre major at first, since he thought pushing buttons would be fun. Then he almost caused a set to fall on Twilight when he accidentally unscrewed something instead of tightening it.
Needless to say those two had the great idea of switching classes and telling no one they did, not even Time and Malon.
Time was pleasantly surprised when Four suddenly could be trusted with a hammer, and Malon couldn't be prouder of Four's stage presence almost bringing her to tears.
Only green is named Link. The others actually have different names, but either people would forget, or just call them Link since Green would stay at the college so much and be seen the most.
They picked their nicknames names after their favorite colors.
Vio might be quiet, but he is the most sarcastic person you will ever meet. Malon wanted him to be a performance major desperately, but the guy has horrible stage fright and will forget all words once he is under the spotlight.
Just like any brothers, the boys fight quite a bit. This was especially a problem when people kept getting them confused. They want to be seen as their own people, not extensions of the same person.
This led to a pretty big outburst at other boys where they talked about their many differences. Just because they look the same doesn't mean they are. They all have different likes, dislikes, and personalities.
He's not technically one of the quadruplets in this AU, but I figured I would throw in a Shadow fact because why not. He shares an apartment with his little brothers, but they don't see each other much since he works nights at a local public theatre running lights, and has a different class schedule than them during the day.
They all find time to catch up in the tech booth during rehearsals though, and the others can only look up and feel unsettled while watching what looks like 5 silhouettes of the same person moving around behind murky glass.
HIHIHI your theatre au is amazing!!! I saw on your blog that you’re a fanfic writer, do you by any chance have an ao3? I would love to read your works! <3
HIHIHI!
THANK YOU SM!
AO3 Is probably something I should have had linked a long time ago, huh? Lmao
Anyway! Here it is!
College has kept me from writing anything recently, but I close my next show at the end of the week so hopefully I can find some time!
These little guys are still knocking around in my head!

Did some character designs for this fic I’m writing, and thought I might share for the five other Zombie Apocalypse AU lovers lol. God, I wish I could draw.
Sky:
Was a fighter pilot for Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force
Originally from the city
Helped found ‘Skyloft’, an illustrious airborne safe haven that is supposedly the only human civilisation left completely free of infected
Wields a sword!!!! Insanely good fighter, despite very little swordplay training
Sun was an engineer for the same base, now lives on Skyloft too
Time:
Previously a farmer at Lon Lon Ranch alongside Malon
Human/Hylian by birth, but raised rurally by his Kokiri foster family. He still has a tinge of a Kokiri accent
He and Malon stayed pretty much to themselves throughout most of the apocalypse until pillagers came for the farm
Mainly uses a wood axe to fight since that’s what he’s used to, pretty decent fighter but has tired with age
Malon fights too, and is fairly good at it, though she uses a longbow (like in that one art of Jojo’s hehe)
Has that ‘apocalypse dad’ vibe to him lol
Twilight:
Time and Malon’s nephew
Lived and worked as a Ranchhand in Ordon village with his father Rustl, mother Uli, siblings, and girlfriend Midna
All his village (including Midna) died very early on in the apocalypse, Twi blames himself
Has been travelling ever since, no real aim in mind
Has a dog named Wolfie!! Who was gifted to him by Midna
Found Wild and nursed him back to health, they now travel as a duo
Uses a shotgun like the farmer that he is, though hates having to actually wield it. Great fighter when he needs to be, though won’t if he doesn’t have to
Wild:
Worked as a security guard for a laboratory called the Royal Sheikah Research Centre
His friends Mipha, Revali, Daruk, Urbosa, Zelda and Impa all worked there too
Amputee, lost his right arm in a workplace accident, uses a prosthetic
Throughout the start of the apocalypse, he continued to defend the lab as they tried to find a cure to the virus, however an experiment went wrong and an explosion caused the building to collapse, leaving Wild unconscious in the rubble
He was found by Twilight who carried him away and nursed him back to health, though Wild was left with extreme long-term amnesia
Sometimes, memories will come to him in flashbacks
Uses one of Twilight’s old hunting bows to fight (adapted to use with his prosthetic), and is an absolutely stellar shot
Warriors:
Was a Captain in Her Majesty’s Royal Army, had just been promoted and moved base when the apocalypse occurred
Has a twin sister named Linkle, though their father fled the country at the first whiff of danger and dragged her with him
Continued to work at his military base for the majority of the apocalypse to help attempt clearing out the zombies and providing a safe place for survivors
He knows of Skyloft’s existence, and wishes to travel there at some point
Uses his military appointed handgun to fight, as well as a scavenged machete for closer combat fighting. Also has a knife stashed away in case of emergencies.
Similar to Sky, is an absolutely incredible fighter, and has a ton of combat experience
You’d want him on your team ;)
Wind:
Lived on Outset island with his Grandma and little sister Aryll, in an archipelago off the coast of Hyrule
Grew up learning how to sail to get to other nearby islands
The apocalypse happened on his 12th birthday :(((
Given how small the island was, his Grandma was quickly infected, but he and Aryll were picked up by a rescue team from Windfall island that was heading to Skyloft
Met Tetra and her dad whilst on the rescue boat
There was an outbreak on the boat, and Wind was mistaken to have gotten bitten. He was pushed overboard, but was first able to source a lifeboat to sail to land, and is now searching to try to and find Aryll
Uses a rope with a rock tied on the end as a grapple to fight, as well as a comically large steel lump hammer (yes this is a reference to in-game Wind Waker items :))))
Despite having less strength, he’s a decent fighter, though the infected terrify him. He would rather die than admit this
Legend:
Lives in his uncle’s cabin in the middle of Faron woods with a Lolian refugee he gave a roof to (Ravio!)
A couple of years ago he had a girlfriend named Marin, who died in a car accident on her way to meet up with him
Obvs he was traumatised by this
His uncle died just before the apocalypse, leaving him and Ravio alone
Ravio runs a trading business with passing-by survivors, this plus their forging is what gives them the resources to stay alive so that they barely need to leave the woods
Thanks to a massive horde that constantly roams the area, Legend has a lot of zombie combat experience and is an incredible, if rather violent, fighter
He can never stick to just one weapon, and has a large range available due to Ravio’s trading business
Hyrule:
Was orphaned young, lived with his grandfather in a small village in the middle of nowhere
His grandfather worked as the village doctor, Hyrule learned medicine from him
After his village was decimated in the apocalypse, Hyrule began to wander the land as a travelling doctor, stocking up on medical equipment from various pharmacies and hospitals and using them to help any survivors he could
He has severe untreated otosclerosis, which causes him to be unable to hear most external sounds. Before the apocalypse, he did have hearing aids, however when the electricity went off these were no longer useful
Fluent in Hylian Sign Language, it is his preferred form of communication
Uses a flamethrower he scavenged to fight, though also has a baseball bat in case he needs it. He is great fighter, however similar to others he very much dislikes doing so
Four:
One of four quadruplets!
Lived in the city, he and his brothers shared an apartment alongside their uncle
Was apprenticing in engineering at a local mechanics when the apocalypse hit
He wasn’t there to witness the deaths of his family, however upon returning home he found zombies and refused to look hard enough at them to discover if they were his family or not
Still living in the city, though exactly where changes depending on where is safe
Lived for a while with an old man named Ezlo and his son Vaati, Vaati tried to kick Four out of the hideout but didn’t succeed. The three parted ways eventually, as Ezlo and Vaati had decided to travel outside of the city and Four couldn’t bring himself to leave.
Fights with whatever he can make out of what’s in his toolbox, including metal pipes, screwdrivers, saws, etc! He’s very inventive :)
Half-decent fighter, but he can’t look his assailants in the eyes.
That’s all folks! There’s a little bit more about each of their backstories, however I can’t spill anything else without completely spoiling my fic!! I hope this reaches some of the other Zombie Apocalypse AU lovers, though I doubt there are many of us! <33
All right for the biggest little theater au do you have any random facts you want to share about it
Sorry for taking so long to answer (actual months)! College has been wild lmao!
But I'm back and here are some of the most random Biggest Little Theatre facts I have come up with!
--
The college theater was actually set to close before Time swooped in and saved it! They had half a year to put together a successful show on a limited budget with almost no students! Somehow, through the power of spite and coffee, they pulled it off and now it is's one of the most successful programs in the state!
Twilight throws parties at his parents' house and thinks they don't notice, even though they have come home multiple times to all the boys asleep on the couch with The Sound of Music playing on the TV.
There have been multiple times when Wars has had to fix a costume backstage. Usually, Hyrule is stage managing and will set up a sewing machine super quick for him. The most iconic moment was when he sewed up Sky's shirt in 5 minutes before they both had to be back onstage.
Sky has horrible audition anxiety. Even when it's just in front of Malon and Time, two people he trusts and has proved himself to multiple times, he still worries himself actually sick. Sun tries her best to help him feel as prepared as possible. Somehow, even though he's shaking in his boots, he blows the audition out of the water every time.
Hyrule, Legend, and Ravio are roommates and it is a miracle that any of them survive. Seriously. Hyrule has almost caught the place on fire multiple times by forgetting to put water in his microwave noodles; Ravio has worked himself to the point that he passes out on any surface, including on the toilet; and Legend leaves his stage combat weapons all over the apartment floor, leading to multiple tripping hazards and pokes.
Wild has knocked over a ladder that was under him, which left him dangling from the light grid. Twilight found him and gave him a solid five-minute lecture about always having someone hold the ladder before helping him down. He proceeded to get into the same predicament just a few days later.
One time the quadruplets got tired of people mixing them up so they all colored their hair. Unfortunately, that just led to the discovery that Twilight is colorblind and realizing how much money hair color costs if you want to keep it looking fresh and not fading to someone else's color.
Wind and Spirit have spent the night at the theater to livestream ghost hunting. They swear they saw something and Spirit was possessed, but the ghost messed up the footage.

There's an interesting metaphor in Troy being portrayed as both an awful, irritating guy (accusing people of cheating because they beat him, trying to start rumours about people with "jax shit my pants", treats his only friend like his personal clown) and also excluded by airheart (not allowed in the winner's lounge, bad relationship with his father, etc). He's human trash, both because he fucking sucks, and because he's been discarded.
And then he falls down the literal trash hole, into a world where all trash is valued and important, where it's all sorted and put to use wherever it's strengths are needed. Nothing goes to waste. And presumably here, Troy will find a little group of friends, real friends, who will value him without letting him walk all over them.
