do women follow the ājrā ā3rdā naming convention
i just realized ive never met a woman whos been named the exact same as their parent and i feel like that has to do with the fact that men are obsessed with themselves and their Lineage or whatever the fuck
The current queen of england is literally named Elizabeth II
monarchs dont count as people
My aunt has the same name as my grandma
My family experience it's been more like we passed down the same middle name. My middle name is same as my mom's which was my great grandmother's first name.... But you only hear Junior/III from males it's true... I always saw it as an ego trip thing.

United States of Tara reaction fic!
Guys this was in my drafts from line 2014-15 and I never posted it. Here we go!!
Okay, so this episode aired allll the was back in 2009, but my husband and I found it on Netflix last week and we like it. I saw "Possibilities" and I thought Marshall and Jason were freaking adorable! Then we watched "Betrayal" and I really liked where it ended, prefect for a fan to pick up where it left off. I wrote this between that episode and the closer for season one.Ā
Ā Title: Revived
Author: Pixiebells
Fandom: United States of Tara, Season 1
Genre: Reaction fic to āBetrayalā
Pairing Marshall/Jason
āDid you do this?!ā
Marshall looked up from his novel, as he read placidly on the lawn. The fire was out, and Kate had gone inside. The shed was now a burnt-out stub in the ground, with ash and papers soaked in water, little memories floating around, soon turning to garbage. āOh, yeah, sorry about that. Something just came over me.ā He glared at his mother.
āOh, donāt you dare do that!ā Tara growled at him. āDonāt you fucking condescend me like that!ā
āSo youāre mad about this?ā He shot back, annoyed.
āOf course I am! You burned our fucking shed down, Marshall!ā
āOh, so you get to make irrational, stupid decisions with little to not consequence but the second I act out, itās wrong.ā
āWeāre wrong either way!ā she shouted. āBut in my defense, I wasnāt fully aware of what I was doing. You, however, are.ā
She sighed and sat down on the edge of his chair.
āLook, we both screwed up, okay? Do you really think Iām happy about all this? Do you think I like making a mess of everything I touch? Barely able to keep a job, or get through a weekend of in-laws? Or have a normal afternoon at the spa with my sister?ā
āBack to self-pity, again. Youāre shameless.ā
She grabbed his book and threw it on the lawn, aggravated. āIām sorry, I didnāt order extra snark with this conversation. What is your problem?ā
āRight now? You. You are my problem. I really liked him, and maybe, maybe he likes me back. Do you think I was happy putting myself through that disturbing production, just to spend time with him? What kind of origin story would that be for our adopted children? āYour father and I met because I thought he was cute, and he thought pretending to burn in hell for perfectly valid feelings was a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon.'ā
āOh my God, youāve already imagined adopting kids with him?ā she chucked good-naturedly, despite herself. She didnāt want to insult her sonās feelings, but that was one hell of a crush.
āWell, yeah. Iām like a wolf, or a clown fish, or whatever animals mate for life. Point is, I like one guy at a time. And when I like him, I really like him. And Jasonās not shallow like a lot of people my age. Heās rare. Heās kind of special. And heās grown up in this totally controlling, unhealthy environment and maybe now heāll let his guard down a little.ā
āAww, sweetie. Iām sorry.ā
Taraās anger melted away like the magazine clippings T had plastered on the walls of the shed last summer. Sheād found every image of Justin Beiber she could get her hands on, and wrote āPUSSY BITCHā and āFUCK BELIEBERSā and the semi-political āDONāT TALK ABOUT ANNE FRANK LIKE THAT!ā In red Sharpie all over his stupid face.
She hugged Marshall, and his anger melted just like his bike had. āI promise Iāll never make out with boys you like again.ā
āYou better not.ā He replied in her ear, finally relaxed. They parted and he spoke again: āIām sorry too. I know that was kinda yourā¦place.ā His guilt finally caught up to him.
āItās fine. You know, maybe it needed to go. Maybe that was just cosmic timing. You know, my therapist basically dumped me today.ā
āReally? Aww, I was trying to think of some puns or a catch phrase for you guys, like a reference to Oceanās Eleven or something.ā.
Tara smiled in appreciation. āI love how creative you are. Iāve always loved that about you. But hey, maybe itās a chance for a new start, you know? Maybe I should get this new therapist, or Ā go back on the meds.ā
āNo, no, donāt do that just for my sake. That should be your choice, my melodrama notwithstanding.ā
āThank you. And Iād do it for us. All of us. Itās just something Iām tossing around anyway. Come on, why donāt we go inside?ā she mended fences, picking up his book and handed it back to him as he got up.
āJust one more thing?ā
āYeah?ā
āWas he at least a good kisser?ā
āOohh, details!ā she squeaked. āWhy? You wanna kiss him?ā
āAlready did, actually.ā he beamed, content with his conquest..
āOh, well done, playa.ā
āAnd then he kissed back.ā
āOoooh!ā
āBut it was so quick I wasnāt sure. Soā¦ā
āHe was all right. Not terrible, not great. Not much experience. Well,ā she teasingly looked to him, ānot yet.ā
āMom.ā he blushed, looking away.
They had reached the kitchen by then. Kate was back up in her room and Max was washing his hands.
āOK,ā Tara Ā breathed a sigh, āIām gonna go change, get cleaned up. Start helping out with dinner.ā
As she went upstairs, Marshall sat at the counter and struck up a conversation with Max. āDad?ā
āYou and mom work things out?ā he asked, pulling a roast pan out of the cupboard.
āYeah, and Iām sorry.ā
āItās all right. Just, donāt do it again, okay?ā
āOkay. I am sorry.ā
āYouāre fine, itās cool. Not the first fire Iāve put out today,ā he remarked with a smile.
āI have kind of an important question. About Mom and her alters.ā
āWhatās that?ā he asked, while rummaging through the freezer.
āWhen sheās T, and sheās hitting on some other guy, or, making out with someone half her age. How do you get over it? You guys have been together for almost 20 years. Doesnāt at least a little part of you get insanely jealous?ā
āOn some level, yeah.ā Max agreed, sticking a bowl of water in the microwave.Ā āBut I remind myself of a couple things. Itās temporary, itās meaningless, and itās not really her. To be honest, when sheāsā¦not herself, I actually donāt really, uhā¦ā
āOh,ā Marshall was taken aback. āSo when sheās not herself, you guys donātā¦ā
āWe agreed it was weird. So it makes it easy to disconnect.ā
āThat makes sense. Sorry if that was a weird question.ā
āAw, come on. We both know thatās the tip of the weird iceberg around here.ā Max winked at his son.
Marshall chuckled, relived. Just then, there was a knock at the door.
āIāll get that, youāre starting dinner,ā he said, rising from his seat. Max thanked him and turned back to the microwave, hot water now ready for thawing.
He opened the door and Jason was there, looking a bit anxious.
āOh,ā Marshallās mood immediately cooled off. He was square with his mom, but Jason didnāt exactly fight her off, and he was still hurt.Ā
āSorry, my momās not available right now.ā He contemplated closing the door, but settled on giving him an icy glare instead.
āLook, Iām really sorry. And believe me when I say Iām not interested in anyā¦version of your mom. I didnāt mean to hurt your feelings. If it makes you feel any better, it was weird. And Iām not into labels or whatever, but I really do like you. And your familyās kinda cool. Hell of a lot better than mine.ā
āOK, OK,ā God damn, he was so cute...he couldnāt throw him away after one weird afternoon, āyouāre off the hook. I might have gone a little overboardā¦ā
āHoly shit, that was you?ā Jasonās eyes widened. āWhoaā¦I hope I never piss you off.ā
āIā¦gotā¦jealous.ā he stammered. āSorry if thatās weird for you.ā
āIāll take as aā¦compliment.ā Jason said with a shrug.
They shared a smile, relieved at last.
āSoā¦maybe we can hang out later on?ā Jason suggested. āI mean, if you still want to.ā
āI do want to.ā Marshall quickly replied. He still had a shot! āWeāreĀ gonna have dinner in a little while, but maybe...ā he reached over and tucked back a lock of hair that has fallen over his eyes, āwe could go for a walk first?ā
āSounds good to me.ā Jason agreed, grinning.
āOkay.ā Marshall said quickly, voice teeming with excitement.
He bounded inside and let his dad know theyād be out.
āIāll be back for dinner,ā he promised.
āNo rush.ā Max smiled back, reassuringly.
Marshall waltzed out the door, and they walked off, together.
THE END.
nah I think we should really stop glorifying cigarettes
you sound boring.
You sound like youāve never had the scent of cigarette smoke ingrained in your clothes to the point where people in middle school thought you smoked at eleven because your parents couldnāt be bothered to go outside. You sound like youāve never had your mother flick cigarette ashes out of the car window and have them fly into your face. You sound like youāve never been kept up at night by the sound of your dad hacking up a lung because he has to get up for his midnight smoke. You sound like youāve never had to run into a convenience store to get your mother cigarettes as soon as you turned eighteen and cringed at touching the box because you know theyāre not only killers but government sanctioned killers because they can not only tax the shit out of them but ensure people buy more at the cost of young lungs and a once beautiful home now plagued with the smell of smoke and ash. You sound like youāve never had a great grandmother who stopped smoking 30 years before her death who still got lung cancer and subsequently died. You sound like a Fucking ignoramus. Smoking isnāt Fucking cool, it isnāt fun to glorify, itās disgusting and makes not only you but your children smell bad. Makes not only you but your children cough, get cancer, get sick.
You sound like a Fucking moron. Smoking isnāt cool. Grow the Fuck up.
No, you grow the fuck up. Thereās mountains of constant judgment when it comes to smoking. How about you leave people alone and let them do what they want with their bodies.
There is a REASON. Itās not just their bodies theyāre fucking. Itās never just their bodies with something fucking airborne. Especially when you have CHILDREN AND PETS.
My grandfather smoked in his house decades ago. We moved in. We started working on it. After just one day of having the AC off so it could be worked on, I could no longer stay in the house because the smell was coming out of the walls so strongly and triggering my asthma to the point where I couldnāt breathe. My grandfather is dead and his smoking still managed to effect me that negativity. It is not just their body.
My aunt took up smoking in secret as a coping method for her depression. My cousin found out and she was so scared for her momās health that she hid the cigarettes. But when my aunt noticed they were missing, do you think she had a calm conversation about the whole thing with my cousin? Nope. She stormed into her room in such a rage, my cousin was too scared to even argue. She just gave the cigarettes back and prayed for her mom to leave the room. There was no explanation for why she took up smoking, for why she was trying to hide it, no reassurance for her worried daughter, not even a question as to why my cousin took them⦠there was just addiction-fueled anger. Directed at a child who had no control over her environment.
And then thereās my own mother, who has never taken up smoking, but who grew up with two chain-smoking parents. My mom who has permanent lung and throat damage from a lifetime of breathing in smoke that she didnāt ask for. My mom who now takes daily medication so her throat doesnāt ache.
But, tell me again how smoking only affects your body?
I grew up breathing not only my step-dadās cigarette smoke, but all his friends as theyād frequently hang out in the living room together creating a cloud of smoke that permeated the whole house. I got asthma at 10. I found a growth in my left lung at 30. I now have 1 lung. 1 lung and Iām still asthmatic. Fuck people who smoke around children.
If you canāt agree with this, then fucking unfollow the shit out of me. Too many people in my family have died. My grandfather lost his wife to Lung Cancer. He still smokes though. And my dad who stopped cold turkey when my oldest brother was born and went through hell to make sure his first kid wouldnāt have to also. But did it help? No. Because his mom didnāt care that she had a newborn inhaling her goddamned secondhand smoke. Donāt you dare say it only affects the smoker. Donāt you dare.
Points up. Same.
My birth mother choose to smoke and had me at 15 & the chain reaction effect it had on me has been a major impact on my life. Partly because of the smoking, I was born 4 months early, weighed 1 1/2 lbs and needed to be put in an incubator. I had stage 5 ofĀ retinopathy of prematurity in both eyes, meaning I was born blind, as my retinas were both completely detached and had to be reattached.Ā
Iāve been totally blind in my left eye my entire life. My vision in my right eye as a child was so bad it was 20/200. Thatās not a typo; what a normal human being could see at TWO HUNDRED FEET I had to be twenty feet away to see it. Most people donāt even realize vision that bad exists, although my vision has improved to 20/60 since then. Yet bc I have almost no depth perception, Iām unable to drive. Itās never been a reality for me and Iām 36 now. I also have ADHD from the nicotine exposure and they came with its own set of challenges.
All those things they warn you about on the side of a pack of cigarettes about what effect it has on unborn babies has happened to me.
I understand smoking is a physical, chemical and psychological addiction.
I acknowledge that addiction is a disease.
I know diseases need to be treated and not shamed, stigmatized or guilt-tripped.
But for Godās sake, donāt smoke if youāre around kids, pregnant or near anyone whoās pregnant. Please.Ā

@bixbiboom
Fanfiction is such a great way to learn how to write. Like, you get to take these worlds and these characters created by other people, and you can play with them and explore them in ways that interest you, focusing on building your skills in dialogue, interaction, genre conventions and so forth, without having to worry about building the backstory for it yourself.Ā Thatās such a valuable thing.
Donāt let anyone tell you that fanfiction is less-than, because itās one of the best tools out there for learning how to do the detail work of writing without having to concern yourself with the broad strokes (yet).

You just have to Look
The gods havenāt left us, but some say they are forgotten
Zeus roars his battle cry as lightning strikes skyscrapers and thunder rolls over corn fields and grassy plains.
Hera sings a lullaby to the crying newborn babies every night and hold the hand of those born early, those fighting to survive.
Artemis screams her protest in the voices of every woman, young and old, as they raise their fists for equality.
Demeter whistles through the streets of cities, rustling the leaves of scarce trees, reminding the concrete jungle of the jungles around them.
Poseidon bellows through the foghorns of steam ships, cruise liners and cargo ships as they dock into the harbour.
Hephaestus hammers his forgeās red fires with the punch of a time-clock and in the muscles strains of the working man.
Apollo blasts his voice through every headphone, earbud and speaker turned way too loud.
Aresā battle cry echoes through a stadium as the crowd cheers after a national anthem is played.
Aphrodite whispers in the giggles and āI love you"s said between lovers intimating.
Hermes laughs in the roar of every engine and the gurgle of gasoline through the pump.
Dionysus cheers in the spirit of every young person celebrating themselves and making their lives enjoyable.
Athena hums in the silence of a late night library visit, in the turn of a page and the scratch of a pen.
Hestia smiles in every host saying ācome inā, in every ovenās beeping, and the sigh of relaxation in ones home.
Hades beams in every dark humoured joke, in every Halloween night, and in every morning after.
They say the gods are gone, forgotten and a world away. But they are here, if you look for them.

Freddie Highmore Appreciation post
So Iāve been a fan of his since I was about five or six, and I just want to share some love for him because heās awesome.
Heās British but can do a near-perfect American accent
Freddie worked twiceĀ with Johnny Depp, who he said was his favourite actor: the first time was inĀ āFinding Neverlandā and then the second wasĀ āCharlie and the Chocolate Factoryā
Following on from that, Depp was the one who recommended Freddie to Tim Burton forĀ āCharlie and the Chocolate Factoryā, and he said heās always been impressed by Freddieās acting at such a young age
He was an adorable kid I mean:
I swear to God, he was that kid who was in EVERYTHING. If you look at his filmography between 2000-2010 (so when he was 8-18 years old), itās amazing.
To add, even though he was in so many films, he still managed to ace all of his exams. He got 10 A*s in his GCSEs and 4 A* grades in his A-Levels - so he got TOP GRADES IN EVERYTHING HOLY FU-
He studied at Cambridge University
He played two roles inĀ āThe Spiderwick Chroniclesā - he played twins called Jared and Simon, acting opposite himself and creating two distinct characters so it was easy to tell who was who (even the voices sound a bit different!)
He speaks fluent French, Spanish and Arabic.
Heās barely aged a day - heās 26 now and still looks like he could be a teenager tbh
A number of the films he was in had video-games, and he would reprise his roles in those video games every time: The Golden Compass, Spiderwick Chronicles (he did BOTH twins and still sounded different), Arthur and the Invisibles, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory etc.
His performance onĀ āBates Motelā as Norman Bates was simply amazing; to this day, I think heās the only person whoās done Anthony Perkinsā performance any justice. He also directed an episode ofĀ āBates Motelā
Not only did he play Norman pre-āPsychoā, but he also had to play Norma (Norman Batesā mother) because sheās Norman Batesā split personality - and he was PERFECT. Itās obvious he studied Veraās performance long and hard because the detail/little body language movements were spot on
Heās now on a show calledĀ āThe Good Doctorā where he plays a surgeon with high functioning autism; Iāve seen so many people say that his performance is, for the most part, extremely accurate as to what having autism is like.
Heās close toĀ āBates Motelā star, Vera Farmiga, and is even the godfather to her son Fynn. There was a cute video that Vera filmed a while ago of him and Fynn play-fighting with plastic swords.
Also, thereās a picture of him reading to Veraās kids:
Heās friends with Skandar Keynes, who played Edmund in the Narnia films
His full name is Alfred Thomas Highmore though omg
Learned how to play a bit of guitar for his role inĀ āAugust Rushā
If you watch him in any film, heās so painfully talented
I mean, have you seen that scene inĀ āFinding Neverlandā where he destroys the playhouse? They filmed that scene at the beginning of filming because the director wanted the older actors (Depp and Kate Winslet) to change their attitude towards working with him (i.e. Instead ofĀ āoh heās a little kidā it wasĀ āholy crap heās talentedā) and treat him like an adult actor (bearing in mind he was about 12)
He wore a #TimesUp pin at an event (I think it was the Golden Globes) which I know doesnāt really count for anything but still
He has a sense of humour and is able to joke about himself (just searchĀ āBates Motel Comic Con skitā - thereās two videos that will make your day, I promise)
Freddie is honestly such a lovely guy - not only is he handsome (imho) but he also comes across as very down-to-earth and grounded too. Heās even said multiple times that he had a rather normal childhood despite being in movies, and that could be because his mother was his agent (sheās also Daniel Radcliffeās agent). But heās honestly so sweet and not full of himself at all.
In short, love for Freddie Highmore!
