Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in the long and complex history of emancipation in the United States.
This JSTOR Daily reading list explores how freedom was commemorated across different communities, the origins of Juneteenth celebrations, and the ways Black Americans used Emancipation Day gatherings to advocate for citizenship, voting rights, and civic participation.
See the reading list.

when @piraytoro asks me to jump, i say âhow high?â here is the first chapter of a new fic called do you know (what youâre missing will show) (5.8k).
fic summary:
On his first day of school, Pete Wentz learns that the prettiest girl he's ever seen doesn't dateâor won't date until her sister does, at least.
Ray Toro doesn't know what she expects when a new kid wants to play bass for her band, but it wasn't a date. With a girl.
(or, the 10 Things I Hate About You au)
chapter summary:
"Aw, youâre not one of those guys who gets weird about girls in the scene, right?â
Pete shakes his head, maybe too enthusiastically. âNo, of course not.â He thought that would be obvious, but heâs not really dressed like heâs into local music. His mom wouldnât let him. He probably looks like a douchebag. âI mean,â he says, trying to find evidence against it, âback home, half the people my band hung out with were chicks. Girls. Women.â Yeah, âchicksâ definitely made him sound like he was weird. âAnd, uh⊠my momâs a feminist?â
G Way is there, somewhere, hidden behind people or in the shadows, and Ray wouldnât be nervous about it if Pete hadnât told her literally right before they went on. She likes to think sheâs immune to that, and maybe she isâshe didnât have any big fuckups, at leastâbut her hands shake now, fumbling her guitar when she tries to put it in the case.
happy jet star saturday! i finally FINALLY posted chapter one of the very slowburn very party-centric very putting jet star into situations danger days fic called be still, my indelible friend (15.5k). i have had so much fun working on this and i'm happy to have it out in the world!!!
summary:
California, 2015.
Party looks at him, really looks. Heavy boots over dark jeans; black jacket, writing on the front of it; sunglasses on his head, over a mop of brown curls; a handsome face with kind eyes.
after a year long wait (whoops) chapter two (39.8k) is now up!
summary:
California, 2016.
Party likes Bombay Beach. But it doesnât feel solid, permanent; itâs a pitstop on the way to the end. A mirage, promising safety when the desert still looms all around them. But they keep it to themself.
Thereâs no imminent danger. Itâs been a long time since they could say that. They wonât take it for granted.
California, 2017.
Dracs show up at a vending machine. One of them shoots Kobra in the leg. Party and Jet just barely manage to get them all, dodging shots and aiming poorly. Jet gets clipped in the shoulder, Party gets another graze on their arm.
âWe canât keep doing this,â Jet says as they drive away, voice wavering. He drives with one hand, unable to bend his shoulder. âIâm so sorry, Kobra, Iâm so, so sorry. I shouldâve protected you.â
murderscenelife nation: iâm going to be privating my wips, indelible friend and do you know, for the time being until i get more work done on them . feel free to download them if youâd like as i donât have an estimate of when theyâll be back up . i plan to private them on 6/7/26 . sorry for doing this itâs just a lot of pressure to have them up for so long without updating and since i plan to come back to them i donât want to delete or orphan . hope yall can understand <3

Every day i think about those black musicians whose songs were made into covers by white people and now everyone thinks that these are the originals. Youtube comment sections are full of people like "is this what it feels like to find out you're adopted?" instead of celebrating and promoting the original creators of the songs.
In descending order based on last.fm listener count
Firstly, this post INCLUDES TRANS WOMEN so don't let this get derailed
Secondly, I stuck to artists below 500k listeners because the purpose of this post is to hopefully expose you to artists you were more likely unaware of previously (so this does not include the many prolific, but already quite popular bands like boygenius, The Last Dinner Party, Wet Leg, etc.).
And lastly, this list was formulated by me and my own tastes/interests, which are biased! If anyone wants to suggest more artists/bands (especially more non-english ones) I'd love to add them!
