The amount of hate Usopp gets pisses me off so bad man. I'm only in Marineford but the amount of awful shit takes I see about his character is so gross.
I feel so maternal towards him. He's so brave.
And the way so many people justify their hatred towards him using "I can't forgive him for water 7" like, if your brain didn't operate at 3rd grade level then yeah, you're going to see that as "betrayal" when it's so clear why he did that and why he felt the way he did.
For one, nobody will admit it, but I know for a fact some peoples hatred towards him is rooted in racism, but we'll get into that another time.
But on on top of all that, I think the main reason is that Usopp is the most relatable character to the audience and I think it reminds people just how much they wouldn't be able to handle being a situation where they are surrounded by so many people stronger than them. EVEN STILL Usopp managed to make it so far and he's been able to stand alone in certain situations and survive with just a slingshot and a dream. His captain is a literal Sun God. And he still stands beside him.
Let there ever be a moment where Luffy needs him to take someone down, Usopp will absolutely do everything he can no matter how scared he may be.
Saying usopp needs to be the Straw Hat to sacrifice himself because hes "useless" is insane, and also, AS IF Luffy would even let that happen. Luffy could barely handle when Usopp left in Water 7, do you think, especially with his gear 5 powers, he would let Usopp sacrifice himself? Be so fr.
