Omg guys, when we meet Kat in 1999 she introduces herself to Alice by saying, "I'm Katherine Landry, but everyone calls me Kat."
Colton tells Fern that his daughter is named Katherine. And she immediately calls her Kitty Kat cause she realizes this is her friend from 1925.
What if the reason "everyone" calls her Kat is because of Grandma Fern???
I like how The Way Home said the tragedies will come and nothing can change that. You have to live with what happened. The only time you have any degree of control is when it's happening in the present.
And the magic of the pond isn't in taking you back to prevent the tragedies, but in making sure the right people are there at the times when they can help, even if just with the coping. It delivers a friend when you need one, someone to pull you out of the fire, family to take you home, new perspectives on old trauma, and chances for last goodbyes...but the tragedies and hardships will still come.
It's a very grounded sort of magic, not undoing all the hurt, but creating new ways to live with that hurt, to redefine how it shapes you, and to grow around it.
stop mistaking desire for compatibility
Well…this sure is a room… I hope there aren’t any elephants in it…

I promise you things will get so much better when you start processing people’s behavior as information rather than a verdict on your self-worth. If someone doesn’t text back, suddenly pulls away, whatever it may be, the solution isn’t to put on a tap dance for them and try to regain their approval. It’s not to crash out on them and try to force them to react a certain way. It’s just to take a step back, take a deep breath, and assess what this tells you. What’s this saying about them? What’s this saying about you??
if i had a nickel for every time alice saw elliot’s glasses at the scene of something very bad happening at lingermore i’d have two nickels which isn’t very many but it’s weird that it’s happened twice
People always talk about The Way Home from the angle of "imagine getting to hang out with and be friends with your mom as a teenager" and I agree but I also can't stop thinking from Fern's perspective. You have a best friend as a young adult. You get to hear about her daughter and her life. She holds you when you lose the love of your life. She's the first person you tell you're pregnant. Oh and yeah, she's your great-grandaughter. And you were there when she came home from the hospital. And you probably held her and tried to soothe her as she grew, and she never knew how much she meant to you the whole time because you can't tell her.
I love when people ask "how did you learn this skill?" I just started, there's no secret. that's it. a vast majority of the time the only thing holding you back is your trepidation to start.
Thinking about Colton who probably wondered over his friend Alice for years. Probably felt awful that the last time he figured he’d ever see her, he told her he didn’t have time for her.
“Next time you’re here, we’ll definitely have our jam session, yeah? Just like old times.”
But then… next time never came.
At least, not with that same version of her.
Because then, one day, 20 years later, there she is. The same girl, close to the same age.
The next time he sees her in 1999, she says she’s a future version of the Alice he just met again. That the Alice he’ll see that summer isn’t her, doesn’t know him and their history.
But he makes good on that promise. They have that jam session, he makes sure of it, encouraging her. And reminds her to keep going, no matter what.
And then, finally, the day before he dies. He sees her again. He gets to know who exactly she is. And she knows him and most of their history.
